Huggies vs Pampers vs Luvs vs ... ?

Let's talk diapers.

We are still using gifted diapers so I can't exactly be picky about them but I'm noticing a few things and I'm wondering if you've noticed too ...

I feel like Huggies are smaller? Deft size one Huggies are smaller than pampers size one. I also feel like pampers do a better job over night. We've just opened our first pack of luvs ... seems OK so far - pretty close to pampers in size

We have target brand and sams brand that we haven't tried yet because they are size 2. The only ones we were gifted that I didn't like and would never use again were "Parents Choice" ... leaked everywhere.

Do you have a favorite? Do you only buy one kind?

  • I've only used Pampers so far, but when we're out I'm going to try Target brand to save a some money. I'm curious what other people think.

  • I know Huggies are very unpopular here, but so far they have been the best at controlling blowouts for our explosive baby booty.
And I hate the net lining in Pampers, sticks to her bum.
I have a package of Up and Up brand to try still and a package of Kirkland (Costco) to try out.
None that we have tried so far have caused any rashes or problems.
  • I've only tried pampers and earths best. We used pampers for the first 2 months before switching, and made the switch for environmental reasons. Pampers were great, never leaked. Earths best are really good for us now, but making the switch was a learning curve on how to make them fit right for our baby. I'm sure that's the case switching to any diaper as they al have their differences!

  • One day we left the diaper bag at home while out and about and had to buy the dollar general brand diapers not only did they feel HORRIBLE but they LO had a allergic reaction to them. I felt horrible but it was all they had and there were no other stores around. The rest of the bag went in the trash
We usually get Luvs they work well and are cheaper than pampers. I hate buggies they don't fit LO at all!
  • Luvs are my favorite by far.  I use them for both boys.  They are also less expensive than Pampers and Huggies from what I've seen.

  • With DD1 I used Luvs and they worked great. DD2 has such massive blowouts I've found Pampers does a slightly better job of absorbing the mess.
  • We used Huggies for DD1 exclusively. With this fat baby they don't work. We've had the best luck with Pampers Baby Dry and Target's Up and Up. THey all fit small to me, though. I don't care for Luvs because they have an overwhelming perfume-y smell.

  • I never believed the Pampers hype, but it's true!

We were having some leaks with Huggies, especially as she got bigger (size 1), so I decided to try Pampers. Leaks stopped, until one day at daycare when they had to change her outfit. I was surprised, but then I realized we had given daycare a leftover pack of Huggies.

Pampers definitely beat out Huggies for us. LO is long and skinny if that matters.

Haven't tried Luvs. I do like their commercials.

  • Luvs all the way. Hated huggies too rough and bulky and Pampers is pretty much the same as Luvs, Luvs are just cheaper.

Huggies leaked every time, so I ditched those quickly. However, I have heard that if your baby has chunkier legs, they work better. My kiddo's legs look like string beans, so they definitely didn't work for us.

I love Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive, because they're softer and (I feel like they) prevent diaper rash. But they're the priciest package on the shelf, so I've been looking into other brands/styles. Speaking of which, Pampers Swaddlers are my favorite, bit like @Jenball717 mentioned, the net lining sticks to bums, which just causes me to have to use more wipes. Pampers Baby Dry are just "meh, IMO, and they don't have a wetness indicator, so they're among the bottom of my list.

Luvs are okay and haven't leaked yet, but like Pampers Baby Dry, they lack a wetness indicator, which irritates me. Seems like easy technology, but you get what you pay for. Bonus is, Luvs diapers are covered in monkeys and cute as hell. (Given Procter & Gamble make Pampers and Luvs, it's probably no surprise that Pampers Baby Dry and Luvs get similar scores from moms. If you look at the inside, they're virtually identically constructed.)

Right now, we're using Target Up & Up and for the price, they're definitely near the top of my list. I feel like they don't block the pee/poop smell as much as Pampers, so we change more diapers, which may negate the savings...who knows, really. They do have a wetness indicator, though, which is nice, but odds are we'd be ready for a change anyway. All in all, not for those who want to drag out a diaper change.

So, I guess my ranking for the six types we've tried so far would go like this:

    1) Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive
    2) Pampers Swaddlers
    3) Up & Up
    4) Luvs/Pampers Baby Dry (tie)
    5) Huggies

TBH, I'll probably be buying Pampers Swaddlers when we run out next, to see how they work in a Size 2 vs. Newborn.

  • I use Huggies Overnight for ...overnight, but I like the shape and overall fit of Pampers Swaddlers.  Bonus for the pee strip in the front

  • We're still using gifted diapers as well. So far I like the pampers sensitive for the wetness indicator but we've had far fewer leaks with the baby dry. I think they just fit him better...or his thighs are getting chunkier. It's one of the two...lol
  • I've only used Pampers Swaddlers, Huggies, and Up and Up.

While I thought Up and Up diapers were pretty absorbent and we didn't have any leaks/blowouts, I don't think they block the pee smell AT ALL. That being said, ever since being pregnant, I'm super sensitive to the urine smell... therefore Up and Up is a no go for us.

I thought huggies were a little stiff and not as absorbent as Pampers.

Pampers Swaddlers so far is my favorite. I love the wetness indicator, I like that they mask the pee smell, and we rarely have blowouts/never have had a leak w/ them.

We're still using gifted diapers, but once we run out, we're going to try LUVS as well.

If it helps, my LO has fat thighs and is an all around chunker.

  • Luvs all the way. I didn't like target brand. They just felt really heavy when full. No wetness indicator on Luvs but I really don't see that as necessary anyhow. They hold, no blowouts and they are the cheapest among the name brands.

  • We were using 7th Generation and Earth's Best for a long time for environmental reasons. I was finding some good deals for a while, but now it's just gotten too expensive and I'm doubting how much more environmental they really are. We love the Target diapers. Just started using the CVS brand and we like those too. The few times we've used Pampers, DD1 got diaper rash. We had a bunch of blow outs with Huggies in the newborn size with DD1 so we haven't tried them since.

And I agree with PP, the sizes are different depending on the brand. 7th Generation runs much smaller than Earth's Best, for example.

  • I've actually noticed that Huggies little snugglers work very well compared to regular Huggies. I also don't mine their wipes.

We are also still using gifted diapers and probably will for awhile. Somehow I ended up with 3 cases of Pampers Swaddlers in a size 2. Which as far as sizing, they seem SO much bigger than the Huggies. But they hold everything in and we have yet to have a leak.

I have not tried Luvs nor did I get any as gifts.

  • We have only used Pampers Swaddlers and Target brand (Up & Up). I loved the Target brand when he was a NB size, but hated them in size 1. They do not mask a pee smell at all. My kid pees a lot, and I change his diapers often, but I was probably changing it every hour with those. I'm back to Pampers again. They cost more but they've never leaked, they don't stink, and they hold all his blowouts

  • Huggies weight range is different, so they do run smaller.  I'm not too crazy about them; we've only ever had samples but was never impressed enough to get a full pack.  We did use the Huggies Overnights for DD-  for some reason, they worked great compared to Pampers Overnights but we did have to get a size larger than what she was wearing in Pampers.

If they're on sale and I have coupons (or I can get a great deal, like $ off my next purchase when I buy a certain number of boxes) we'll get Pampers.  I prefer the Swaddlers, but Baby Dry works just as well.

If Pampers aren't on sale, we go with the Target brand.  I actually just got back from there and the currently weekly ad is when you buy 2 big boxes, you get a $15 gift card back and I was able to stack it with the 5% off Cartwheel coupon.

We were also gifted a pack of BRU diapers- I have to say, they were pretty decent.  The price on them is good too, but BRU isn't very conveniently located for us.

  • I used to be a champion for Pampers.

But after using a gift of Luvs I've switched. I don't notice a smell with them.

Huggies I hate. I feel like as soon as she pees I can smell it.

Pampers I like but they are pretty bulky.

  • I love Pampers, but I've been using Huggies because I got a good deal at SAMs club for the box. I'd use either one interchangeably.
  • With DS1 huggies were by far the best. For this baby pampers seem to fit better but huggies do alright. I stocked up on huggies when I found the boxes of 100+ diapers for $10. So I'll be using huggies for a while.
  • Pampers Swaddlers
    Huggies wipes

I didn't mind luvs. I didn't like the blue dye all over them though.

Do you think target will let me exchange, or is Walmart the only place that doesn't gaf and will take them?

I've never had any trouble returning things to target. I just print my baby registry and they'll take anything

  • I've tried Pampers Saddlers and Huggies. I preferred the Pampers mostly because the Huggies flaps fold in when changing a diaper, which makes it harder to put the dirty wipe in. I didn't have blowouts more with one than the other. I just bought a big case if Huggies because they were on sale at Costco.

We were gifted Pampers Swaddlers, Huggies, BRU and Luvs diapers. I like the softness of Pampers, but we had some blowout. Don't care for BRU and Luvs. Huggies actually works well but I decided to try Honest Co. and we love it!!! Fits baby girl just right, no leaks or blowouts so far. Added bonus that it's eco-friendly. :)

  • I'm all about Kirkland diapers! Pretty similar to pampers IMO

This is good to know. I might try a pack after these Huggies run out. The size bracket just didn't seem to work for my peanut right now.

  • Pampers Swaddlers all the way. Many don't like the netting, but I slather on Aquaphor at every diaper change to ward off diaper rash and it doesn't stick to LO's behind.
Tried Target brand - yuck! Scratchy and thin, and my guy pees A LOT, so that was a no go. I like Huggies wipes, but not their diapers. Thinking about trying Luvs just to see, as they are much cheaper.

  • One more thing: if you haven't looked into Amazon's Subscribe & Save program, take a look! I got 132 Pampers Swaddlers in Size 2 for $27 ($0.18 ea.) shipped. BRU's best deal was $0.27 ea. and shipping was extra (or pick up in-store).

  • Adding after reading other responses.

I think Luvs smell like baby powder so I don't mind the smell.

I tried the Earth's Best ones (they were a gift) and I thought they were rough and felt like I was using padded newspaper.  They did work well though.

With DS1 we were gifted some Kirkland/Costco diapers and didn't like them.  They just felt real stiff and thick compared to the other brands.  I also felt that the little velcro circle was not really strong enough and I always worried about the diaper opening.  Never did though.

imageimageBaby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • I was gifted some of the Kirkland ones and really don't like them, didn't hold in anything for my LO. We use Target Up&Up and love them, fit great and no leaks!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • We had all kinds of brands gifted to us everything from huggies and pampers to Walgreens and dollar store brands. We ended up taking back the Walgreens and dollar store ones an just got gift cards to those places. The huggies we tried along with huggies wipes and we hated all things huggies. They didn't fit LO at all and the wipes seemed like they were getting much off. We found that we liked Pampers so much. They fit LO perfectly and we only have leaks when it's time to go up a size. Also Pampers wipes worked better too they seemed "wetter" if that makes since so it seems like we use less. We use the sensitive wipes.
  • I'm all about Kirkland diapers! Pretty similar to pampers IMO

    Really good to know! Thanks

  • We were gifted an unwrapped kind that was super stiff and leaked...not sure if they are Huggies or what. Pampers Swaddlers we really like, very few leaks. We are trying the Costco brand, because of price, but have had some leaking issues there too. Not tried Luv's, that I know of, so no opinion.

  • I have to agree with the other posters that Pampers are much better for us.  Huggies we have major blowouts ( I think bc they are smaller ) Overnights in Huggies usually end with poopy pj's while pampers seem to contain the situation waaaaay better :)
  • I CD but use pampers swaddlers at night, love them! My parents have huggiew for her at their house, hate them! We were gifted target diapers which were pretty great!

  • We love Pampers and Luvs! We liked Huggies in the beginning (for newborn size), but as my LO got older he started leaking out of them all the time :(
  • I've tried them all. I like Huggies the best. They aren't really smaller the cut is just different. It fits my babies body better. Pampers works pretty good too, but her butt crack always shows.
