Waking up in the morning with achy hips-question for STMs

Hi Ladies,

This question is for those who have been through pregnancies before.  I'm 18 weeks and 5 days pregnant (my first pregnancy ever).  For the last 2 weeks I've been waking up with achy hips.  I switch from the left to right sides all night once one side starts aching.  When it first started happening, I was in so much pain that walking would even be painful...however, its gotten much better and is a milder pain than it was 2 weeks ago.  My midwife suggested going to a chiropractor in the area who regularly works with pregnant ladies, but I really want to avoid that route if possible.  I did get a body pillow which I've been told should help.  I've been using it the last couple of nights and it's a little bit better.  I guess this comes with the territory as I am growing a human being. :)  Does this achy hip problem disappear after the baby is born?  If anyone has experience with this, please let me know what I could possibly expect.

Re: Waking up in the morning with achy hips-question for STMs

  • For me it's my hips, back, shoulders and ears (of all things) that are achy in the morning. I don't remember it persisting after birth, but that could be because you have other pains you focus on ;)

My recommendations is either lots of pillows, to go under belly, between legs/knees and along your back. That way you can lay back to not be totally on your hip, and also so you're not laying flat on your back. Hope that makes sense. Also they have pregnancy pillows. I haven't gone that route, but other mommas rave about it.

If you don't want to go the chiro route, then maybe prenatal yoga might be good! I haven't started that yet, but I found before that the days I did yoga I had THE. BEST. Sleeps. :) good luck.

  • Thank you for the suggestions.  I'll look into prenatal yoga.  I have heard that is also supposed to be really good...and I'll try the pillow suggestion.  Glad to hear it does not persist after the baby is born...however, I'm sure I will have other pains to do deal with then like you say. :)
  • Yes, the pain will subside postpartum but in my experience it will only continue to get worse as you get bigger.
Any reson for the chiropractor hesitation?  The chiropractor is and was a huge help for me this pregnancy and last.  I have been to a non-force and regular chiropractor, both do the trick.

  • Try a pillow between your knees

  • I haven't found a better solution than the pillow between the legs route. If I sleep on a really soft mattress its much worse. Mine did get better after delivery both times.

  • It's from the hormone relaxin that loosens your pelvic bones/joints but also effects your other joints as well. It will go away after delivery. I also thought it wouldn't be as bad with subsequent pregnancies (as if my hips didn't spread enought the first time?!?) but they are still painful this time too.

  • A memory foam overlay for our mattress really helped me last time around. I haven't broken it put yet this time but I'm getting close.

  • I have the same problem. I'm actually laying on
top of my pregnancy pillow right now. I sometimes do the bwtween the knees thing, but after a long night of tossing and turing I sometimes take off pressure by just laying my achey hips on the dang thing. It helps!
  • For me yes, it went away after delivery, once I was able to sleep on my tummy and back again.
