Who has Gestational Diabetes and what are you eating?

I found out Tuesday that I have GD (Merry Christmas to me), went to the doctor today for my 28 week appointment at which time I learned how to prick my fingers and test my glucose levels, but I still haven't heard from the nutritionist.  So I'm curious, what are you eating to stay within your levels?  I'm worried that this could be a very boring diet to maintain and could really use some suggestions!  Thanks!

  • Limit or avoid sweets and carbs. Sprouted grains bread is usually good on the carb to protein ratio. Also try dream fields low carb pasta if you are craving pasta. It's also really great for carb to protein ratio as well. Fibre is your friend!!! Good luck!

  • I tried to do a little research because I am sitting in the waiting room for my 3 hour right now. As a just in case I tried to stop buying mac and cheese as a side to go with our dinner and bought veggies instead, but that is all I have accomplished.

  • All I've been craving are carbs!  The American Diabetes website is pretty helpful, but I thought I'd ask what actual people are eating on a regular basis.

  • I don't have the carb numbers here... but to me it seemed like a pretty big amount of carbs I could eat during the day... They want me to fill my plate... 1/4 protein, 1/4 carbs and 1/2 of non-starchy vegetables.

I was shocked to see how much white rice had since this is mostly what I eat. I'm semi-gluten free and also gluten free flour is the same carb content as normal white flour... which was another surprise...

My nutritionist said that if I was eating carb, eat a protein source like nuts, cheese or meat. Since protein helps break down the carbs.

  • If you drink soda or juice, cut out or really limit those. The same for any candy or other sweets. Fruit is ok if you watch your serving sizes and dont eat it at the same time as lots of other carbs. Whole grain carbs in general are best when you have GD. I was told to have some carbs at every meal and snack, but to limit the serving amount (could vary between 30-60 g carbs per meal or 15-30 g carbs per snack depending on how your body responds to those amounts once you start testing your blood sugar after meals). It's also best to add protein at every meal/snack. Also drink lots of water!
  • For breakfast I usually have 2 eggs and 1 piece of toast with sugar free jelly and a cup of coffee with Splenda. Lunch is a toss up between a Cobb salad or a quesadilla with leftover chicken or steak and maybe some grapes or veggies. Dinner is usually chicken, pork or steak with veggies and maybe another carb serving like a piece of bread. Snacks are plain Greek yogurt sweetened with Splenda, zone bars, cottage cheese, string cheese, etc. Pretty plain and boring and I'm getting tired of it already but it keeps my numbers where they need to be for the most part. Also I have been trying to walk after breakfast and dinner along with getting to the gym 3x a week or so. I notice my numbers are better when I'm consistent with that. Good luck!

  • For breakfast I eat oatmeal with a glass of milk and a fruit or one piece of toast with peanut butter or bagel thins with cream cheese, or Greek yogurt with granola. I try to always have a glass of milk with breakfast to help hold me over.
Snacks I do Greek yogurt a lot, cheese sticks, beef sticks, almonds or peanuts, or apple and peanut butter. Fiber one bars have some good ones that help with my sweet tooth. Hummus is good too.

Lunch and dinners I usually stick with meats and veggies. I like tuna sandwiches, lots of chicken, steak, fish or crab meat, also turkey meatballs, if I do spaghetti or some pasta I make sure to have meat with it.

I crave cokes and smoothies and noticed that smoothies that have 38-45 carbs in them still hold my sugar steady and also a small coke every once in a while hasn't effected my sugars, I just make sure to have a protein every single time I eat or snack.
  • I posted in this thread with what I eat, there are a lot of good responses.

  • @kelsistalker,
You weren't told to avoid milk in the morning?  I, and most diabetics I've heard of cannot have it until around lunch time because our bodies don't metabolize it correctly because of the GD.

No the doc said just have 8oz don't overdue it. Milk doesn't seem to mess with my sugars thank goodness!

  • Thank you all so much for the meal and snack examples, they're super helpful!
