    Thanks, @henderson1026 - I certainly can't afford any fancy perfume... and I consider fancy just about any perfume. I have a bottle of essential oil lavender that I dab on for date night. Other than that, I pretty much smell like horses, babies, old leather and dirt - and my DH thinks I smell awesome.

    Im not going to touch the comments about african americans with a 30 foot poll, but i dont think he was hatefull saying he didnt understand why a man would prefer an ass hole to a vagina. Hes an older straight male. He doesnt understand the appeal. He probably shouldnt have said it, but he did.

    Well as a woman a penis is way more desirable than a vagina or an anus, and like he said, thats just me. Its not a reflection on anyone else, nor should his opinion be. 

    But I'm just now reading about this because I generally don't concern myself with celebrities and have never even seen Duck Dynasty, so if I missed something in the GQ article please let me know.

    That makes no sense. It's like when racist people say they're not racist because they have a black friend. It's called tokenism and it's not right.

    Additionally, there is a really ugly movement in the ultra-conservative fundamentalist community where adopting a child who is non-white is "saving them" and the darker they are the more "rewards God will give you." Old church ladies are adopting children from China and claiming they're saving them from "the heathens". And, if they're black, they're "saving them from themselves". It's really messed up. 

    I'm not saying that's what the Dynasty people are doing, but given Grandpa's views, you never know.

    Phil has not said this. He has doubled down on his statements, so yes, Ido believe they are direct quotes.

I mean no one should be able to pull the shit he did and not get zapped for it. Long story short it was all completely ignorant. Good for A&E to rid of them.     My sister is gay and she has a black girlfriend, but even if she wasn't and didn't anyone in their right mind would know that this is just not right. We actually used to watch that show together every now and then. I'll watch the Kardashians any day over this BS.

    If I say, "Asians are good at math," maybe it's not hateful, but it IS racist and ignorant. 

    The fact that he thinks they were happy because they acted happy in front of him at work...well... he doesn't really have a right to talk about how black people feel/felt. 

    And if you act angry and upset at work most of the time, you're probably not going to have a job very long.

    Thinking that black people were better off before they could dine in the same restaurants, attend the same schools, vote in elections, etc. makes me think he's racist.

     I agree with people being surprised that this is his stance and beliefs. If you watch the show and/or know anything about the family - they're incredibly religious and have a history of being outspoken about their beliefs (well, Phil does, anyways). While I think those beliefs are     absolute and total bullshit and 100% wrong and completely offensive - it definitely is anything but surprising to me that he holds them. Many Christians feel this way, and again, while I think it's utter b/s - it doesn't surprise me. 

    The flipside to this, is A&E's perspective. I mean, come on - if a network broadcasts a show documenting red neck bible thumping hunters - you gotta think they've done their research and know exactly what they stand for. So, it's ok to broadcast their show knowing what they believe in.....until they say it out loud? That's basically what I get out of this.

    As I stated earlier, I think they made the right choice---saying things that offend a completely innocent population of people is wrong. But I also don't think the network deserves to be shown as a hero of equal rights, either. I'd bet they knew who Phil was going into this whole business and now they have to cover their own a$$es. 

    tl;dr - network made the right choice, but probably not for the right reasons.

    The fact that he thinks they were happy because they acted happy in front of him at work...well... he doesn't really have a right to talk about how black people feel/felt. 

    And if you act angry and upset at work most of the time, you're probably not going to have a job very long.

    Thinking that black people were better off before they could dine in the same restaurants, attend the same schools, vote in elections, etc. makes me think he's racist. 


    If you say Asians are good at math, that's a stereotype, not racism.


    I know not everyone agrees, but I am of the mind that stereotyping and racism go hand-in-hand. Professor Google arguing my side:

    When you assume that a person engages in specific activities, eats certain foods, and speaks a particular fashion simply due to that person's skin color, that is racist behavior. Automatically labeling a person just because the individual comes from another country or possesses a certain skin color is completely racist and unfair.


    Stereotyping can be considered racism

     

    Although stereotyping is seen as "grouping" a certain trait, habit or behavior with a certain class of people, it can be considered a form of racism. Racism is a narrow-minded opinion of another person or group of people. Racist people often pay strict attention to other races or genders and deem them inferior to their own. Stereotyping follows the same type of "attention grouping" of other races or genders to be classified or considered as lesser or greater.

    People stereotype because what is referred to as a "stereotype" happens so often as to validate the assumption. The simple undeniable fact is that different groups of people most certainly do behave in definable ways. To simply acknowledge this is not to denigrate anyone. In fact, many groups actually take pride in what is often thought of as stereotypes about them.


    Stereotypes =/= racism

     

    Stereotypes are things you witness with your own eyes (and probably some amount first hand accounts) and are generalizations based on observable facts. A stereotype or generalization based on factual evidence is not a dogmatic belief that one race is superior or inferior. Making a generalization does not mean you intrinsically hate another race for no reason other than the color of their skin. It is not racist to notice variations in the way different types of people are. It IS racist to hate another race for no other reason than the color of their skin.
