July 2013 Moms

Not a good appt :(

I went to my ob yesterday for my 3-4 month follow up after the 6 weeks.

First off I find out I have a bladder infection. Awesome. I've also been losing a lot of weight and I asked for them to run a blood panel. So this morning my doc calls me to tell me my thyroid is out of control. So I have to go see an endocrinologist.

I'm scared. I've never had anything wrong with me before. I know it's treatable and it actually occurs to 1-2 out if 10 women post-partum. Has anyone else dealt with this before?

  • I can't help- but want to wish you well!
Was it just the weight lost that caused the red flag? I've lost a ton, too. But I just contributed that to bfing twins.
  • No experience but I wanted to give you some creepy Internet hugs. I'm really sorry you have to deal with all of this..

  • So sorry. A lot of women have thyroid issues...I know that's no consolation. I'm beginning to think I have issues in the other direction since I can't lose an oz of the weight I gained. Hugs!

  • It is scary but thyroid stuff is largely manageable with a pill or two. Good luck!

  • I had trouble with my thyroid postpartum my TSH levels were less than .05, whatever that means.  I was depressed and super hormonal.  It did go away after a few months.  I heard this is very normal.  I never had to take any medication.  I just finished my blood work from this pregnancy and everything is fine.
  • Thanks, everyone!!! @ceechie, yes, it was the weight loss that bothered me. I ate non-stop the week of thanksgiving and came home and had lost weight. I am naturally very thin, but I'm now 10 lbs below pre-preg weight. :(
  • I have thyroid issues. Had it prior to pregnancy and haven't been tested since. My only advice is don't get too bummed over it because it may pass with time since this is likely a side effect of pregnancy. Also it's not a big health issue once it's under control. Stay positive and Feel free to PM me if you want talk.
  • @mamasighs, I see the doc on December 30.
  • Bummer! I'm glad she caught the problem. I hope you're on the road to recovery soon.

It's very treatable but it's also totally understandable to be scared. We are all here for you! Hugs!

  • So sorry you had a bad appointment.  I have hypothyroidism from before pregnancy and it is very easily managed by taking a pill once a day (though if you are losing weight maybe you are hyper not hypo but still easily treatable!)
  • T&Ps for a fast recovery for you!

  • Very treatable from what I understand, but I know you won't have peace of mind until you see the doctor. Hugs!!
  • Sorry things didn't go so well but so much better to know! Once thyroid issues are caught they can be treated. Like pp's said it may be that you are hyper but over time you may not even need to see a separate doctor. (I am hypo! So tired and chunky :) )

  • I've had hypothyroidism since 2006. I just take a pill a day and have blood drawn a few times a year. You'll be fine.

yeah I saw my OB for thyroid issues until I got pregnant and it got a little out of control so they sent me to an Endocrinologist to fix it/monitor.  In retrospect I wish I had started at the Endo because I trust her more for this.  It is especially important if you want to get pregnant again because your thyroid being off can affect your periods and your ability to get pregnant (it can also affect your ability to stay pregnant) - but once they regulate it you should be fine.  I will probably stay with my endo or at the very least go back to her if I want to get pregnant again.  BUT I think my numbers are really off so I might be an extreme case

ETA I actually really trust my OB just not so much the residents I was seeing before her so maybe I would go back to my OB but I would be better about requesting the Endo if I felt uncomfortable with how they were handling it

  • Sorry to hear you got this news. Pregnancy really whacks out a body doesn't it? I hope your appointment goes well!

  • Doctors appointments without definitive answers are the worst. Hoping for nice relaxing peace of mind for you ASAP :)

  • Oh man. So sorry to hear. I've been losing too much weight as well, but I thought it was from breastfeeding. Thanks for posting.

I totally saw an Endo when pregnant - didn't want to take my chances! But my numbers normalized and I am back to my PCP.

  • I don't have any experience, but I hope the doc can get you on some meds to regulate your thyroid. Good luck!
  • Sorry about the appointment. I agree - it's great that you were pro-active and asked for the blood panel yourself. Too often we brush things off even though we know something feels a little wrong. I hope you can get everything evened out soon.

  • Hugs! I'm hypothyroid so it sounds like you are the opposite. I've never seen an endocrinologist but I'm sure everything will be fine. I just have to take a pill everyday. I've been doing it for about 5 years so I kind of forget I even have "something wrong with me". Keep us posted what the endo says.

  • @lizabethann06, I'm really sorry to hear you're going through all of that! I hope you find some relief for your back pain soon. That sounds terrible :(
  • I had thyroid issues after the birth of my DS but wasn't diagnosed until I was trying conceive again. My cycles were nonexistent and I was a hormonal mess. I was 30 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight (my lowest at 97 pounds...) and my primary care giver tested me for everything under the sun. My thyroid came back borderline hypo the first time and then it was really out of whack the next time so I was prescribed a low dose of synthroid. I started taking it Oct. 2nd and finally ovulated and became pregnant with my DD on Oct. 16th so it did the trick! I'm still taking it and have avoided a lot of postpartum issues I had the first time around. I am still losing weight with this baby (10 pounds under pre-pregnancy weight) but I think it's from breast feeding and chasing my toddler. I hope you get some answers at your appointment and your bladder infection clears up soon!
  • @lizabethann06 - this may be super personal, but are you diabetic? My mom has something extremely similar and it was due to a diabetic joint disorder. Whatever the cause I am so sorry. I can only imagine how you are managing.

  • Sorry to hear that! Hope everything turns out ok! I'm actually seeing an endocrinologist in January too because my OBs have no clue what's going on with my ovary and all the cysts. I also have had a super hard time losing weight. I never knew pregnancy would do this to my body! Hope you get everything regulated ASAP!
  • So sorry to hear that. Don't get down though, it'll be ok :) hugs!!

  • Sending hugs ur way!
  • No fun. I'm sorry about all that. I hope they can put together a treatment plan to get you back to normal soon.

I had my thyroid tested PP ( I went to a new PCP) and the results required another test. I just remembered that I forgot to go to that follow up apt last week. Oops.
