Appointment question

I do like my OB, but I'm concerned he's a little to removed from the process. I didn't get any information in the beginning regarding vitamins, what not to eat, etc. Luckily I'm a smart cookie and already knew this stuff :) so I really just chalked it up to him thinking I had my stuff together and knew things. At my latest appointment, the nurse asked me if I was feeling the baby move and I said yes. They never checked the heartbeat. I was under the impression that this was done every time? I'm just wondering if I should continue with this doctor or switch? I hate to switch now but I'm not really getting much out of the relationship. And I'm not crazy about the hospital choices with this doctor.

    If you're not comfortable then switch. It's YOUR prenatal care and baby. You should feel reassured and comfortable with the hospital.

    I would def switch! My OB with dd never even remembered who I was when I would come in. Thankfully he was awesome during delivery when there were complications but I wish I would have switched. This time around my OB is awesome. He not only remembers me AND dh but he takes the time to listen to my concerns and actually cares. I didn't realize it could be like this!

    Ps my OB always checks for hb at every appt starting around 12 weeks.

    I would switch if I weren't comfortable. Being uncomfortable with your doc can make all of labor and delivery a bad experience (so I've heard from a friend). My doctor always seems to remember me. She delivered my nephew, and my SIL had difficulties, but she really loved the way her doctor took care of her. So she was highly recommended. My doc also delivered a friends baby, and the baby was premature and she really helped my friend through it. I've had an ultrasound at every appointment except my last, but she still checked heartbeat.

    Thanks everyone! I'm just worried how they will bill my insurance. I don't want it to hit my deductible in 2013 and 2014. I'm trying to figure that out. Obviously not my main concern, but a concern nonetheless.

    I would go ahead and switch. I am switching right now as well. I never get out of my appointment in less than an hour and half, and only about 15 minutes of that is actually seeing a person. The rest is waiting. Plus I only see residents, who have no idea what they are talking about. They always have to go out to ask questions, and then it literally takes them 20 minutes to come back in the room. I left the last time and said there is no way I am going back to that place. Especially with appointments coming more frequently, I can't be spending an hour and a half in a doctors office every 2 weeks. I am really scared to switch, but I would say it's better to switch now, and at least be happy or the second half, when you are going to have to see this person every 2 weeks, then be frustrated and worried about your level of care, as you are approaching the end.

    If you don't feel comfortable, definitely switch.  It's easier to switch now then when you're further along.  My doc checked the HB every single time with DS and my midwife checks every time now too.

    I'm making the move to a new DR because of the front of house staff.  My appts were constantly rescheduled (three weeks after they made the appt) because the DR wasn't going to be in that day....?!?!....anyway, I'm excited for my new practice and that's one less thing for me to worry about!

     

    I say switch if something doesn't feel right!

    I would switch based off the points you already made. Not checking the baby's heart beat at every appt is reason enough for me to switch. It also sounds like it wouldn't be a big deal since you don't feel like you have much of a relationship with this OB anyway. My DH and I love my OB. He takes his time, he's very informative and answers all of our questions. He just seems to really care about us and our baby and we love that about him.

    I'm sure you will find another OB that is a better fit for you. Good luck! ;)

    I would probably switch doctors based upon what you've said.  I expect the doctor to talk to me about all things baby related.  At each appointment they test my urine, take my blood pressure, check my weight, check my uterus, listen to baby heartbeat, talk to me about any medications I might be taking, and ask about any questions I have.  They also discuss various tests that they do, such as blood tests, vaccinations I should be getting, and ultrasounds.  They also discuss the results.

    I switched after the birth of my first. My experience with 1st OB was ok. No major complaints. But after I switched. I was like "Wow, this is what it's susposed to be like." I love my dr. and the whole practice. And that's important.
