  • It's really random but I hate people who send you an invite for an event they know you can't attend. We just got invited to a wedding in California next summer for people we barely know. The groom's parents were our host family when DH played baseball there. The son, however, I didn't know well and all I heard about the girl was negative things from the mom. They know we have a baby and live 3,000 miles away and won't come but I still have to thank them and send a gift.

Well, maybe that's my UO... in this case, I wouldn't send a gift. If it was someone I barely knew, I'm not sending them a present. Etiquette be damned!

Also - I didn't expect a gift from anyone who couldn't attend our wedding. Heck, I know there were people at our wedding that didn't bring a gift - a few friends who were having a rough time financially. I'd rather them be there to share the day with us than not come at all.

In this case I do have to send something. His parents were ridiculously kind to us and still are. I don't think they'd think badly if we didn't send something but I would. If we didn't have 3 other weddings we had to fly to next year or had R we would go. Can that be another UO? I hate when everyone you know decides to get married at the same time. We have 4 big weddings coming up that either myself, DH or probably R will be in. All of which we have to fly to and all of which I have to send both a shower and a wedding gift and one I have to go to the shower. Two are my family and two are for DHs friends who both went all out on our wedding and baby shower. I have no problem giving but I'm going to need a second job.

My UO is that I really don't like going to weddings. Or buying gifts for them. Luckily almost all of my friends are married now, most are even in the second baby stage.
ETA that we invited 45 people to our wedding and didn't register for gifts. Plus, our wedding was super fun. ;)

wait - so your UO is that people invited you to a wedding that they "know you can't attend," because you are 3,000 miles away and have a baby. but you have 4 weddings you ARE going that you have to fly to, and you WOULD go if you didn't have the other weddings to go to?

And you know the parents well, but not the people getting married - it's not uncommon to get invited to people's weddings if you know the parents well. My parents invited their friends to my wedding, even if I didn't know them well, and vice versa. My IL's friends were at my wedding in another country... that neither of us had even met. It's really not that unusual.

And are you seriously complaining that people are inconveniencing you by getting married? Oy vey.

  • @Allison078 yeah I'm complaining because the last time I saw the people getting married was 6 years ago and last time I saw the parents was 5. We only invited the parents to our wedding (5 years ago) because we lived with them when we were engaged, it would of been rude not. They are lovely people but it's a lot to ask someone to travel to one of the most expensive parts of the country if you don't know them well and it seems like they are just fishing for a gift. The other weddings was just a vent. I'm happy to attend those, it's just a lot at once and a lot of traveling with a toddler. You don't need to get all huffy. It's not your job to bash everyone who has an opinion that differs from yours.

You said, "If we didn't have 3 other weddings we had to fly to next year or had R we would go."

so I'm not sure why it's gift grabby? it just seems contradictory.

I don't think the song "My Favorite Things" should be considered a Christmas Song. Also, I think it just plain sucks in general.
Totally agree ! Also every time I hear it now I think about how Yankee candles made those scents last year... who in the world wants a candle that smells like whiskers on kittens, warm woolen mittens, or schnitzel with noodles ?!
THANK YOU!  When did the sound of music soundtrack jump into the holiday song genre.... super annoying!

  • My UO.... seeing people take holiday pictures with their LO draped in Christmas tree lights makes me seriously cringe!

The chewing/electrical risk, the little fragile glass blubs filled with gas, the fact those lights say to WASH hands after handling.....

    EEEK!

I'm still cleaning it up from last Christmas.

    Edited typo.
I love glitter in theory but this is so true lol.

Well everyone who saw my FFFC last week knows how I feel about gift receipts lol. I always always always give gift receipts because I want my money to be put to use. If you hate what I picked out or got a duplicate I'd be bummed that my purchase went straight into a donation bin. That's me though. I'm a bitch about gifts I guess.

My UO in light of all the Christmas shopping is that I think it sucks that most people aren't willing to look for or pay a little extra for items made in the USA.

By no means does everything in our house come from a USA manufacturer but my DH and I do make a diligent effort to buy things made in the USA, even if they cost more. They are always better quality than the item that is made in China and its better for our economy.

The first thing my FIL looks for on anything brought into his house is where it was made. If its made anywhere but in the USA we will sit through an evening of rants... We are now in good habit to look for US made items unless its unavoidable (nick nacks).

My OU is that it drives me nuts when people don't send thank you cards from showers or weddings. There are 2 weddings we went to last year (and showers) that we didn't receive a thank you for and its still bothering me... I'm a stickler for etiquette.

Glitter is the herpes of the craft world. It never really goes away.

Herpes doesn't go away? Since when? Also can I get herpes from glitter?

  • FYI lots of Christmas lights contain lead, and the CPSC advises not to let children handle them.
  • I think the lights pictures are cute and would be ok if done carefully...but I definitely couldn't with LO. Everything goes in her mouth instantly. We call her Zombie Baby.

I don't want to lie to C and say that Santa brings presents. I don't really get the point of Santa and the only reason I will likely lie to her is so that she isn't the kid telling all the other kids that there is no Santa.

I agree. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it. On one hand I want my kids to have that sense of magical wonder. On the other hand I don't want to hurt my kids' feelings when they find out I lied to them for several years. It's tough.

I hate coffee and peppermint as well. Or should I say I hate mint. Thin Mints, Spearmint, Mint choc. chip ice cream. Any of it.
I've tried flavored cappuchinos that I thought maybe I would like but just couldn't stand it. And no amount of sugar or creamer can get me to drink just regular coffee.

I hate it when people return/exchange gifts I went through the trouble of picking out. You might as well just ask for cash if you plan on trading in my gift for something you really want.

I buy personalized gifts specifically so they can't be returned-- if they don't like it then they are no worse off than if I had gotten nothing.

I am completely with you on this. A gift is a gift.

When I found out about SC the thought never crossed my mind that my parents lied to me for several years. I was just sad the magic was over.

Yeah I guess I definitely remember thinking, "if he isn't real, why did my mom and dad tell me he was?" I know I made the connection that they lied to me and I didn't like it.

    No permanent damage though :)

I'm sure I will tell LO that Santa exists because I don't want her to miss out on the fun. However, I will feel bad about lying to her.
