Job Relocation Drama

I just have to get this out. The division manager had a meeting yesterday advising us that they will be transfering our office to our corporate office the 3rd week of March 2014. I will be out on Maternity Leave at this point so I will not be affected until the end of June when I return. But when I return I will driving 50 miles further than I am now on a freeway that is known in Southern California to be a dead stop toilet! I will have to plan on being in 2 hour traffic to get there and 2 hour traffic to get home every day. So I went to my direct supervisor and asked what our options are. Can I work from home, are they offering severence packages for those who choose not to go.... Both answers were no. They are not considering this a relocation just a office change. So they dont have to offer severence packages. Even though they are expecting us to now drive in major traffic let alone the increase in gas... I am so pissed! We work our asses off for this company and they can give a shit less about us. I am so mad right now! I wont be coming back but you can bet your ass I will tell them that I am and then call them the morning I am supposed to return and tell them to go to hell! I just cant beleive how they are treating us.... it blows my mind. From my department there is only 1 person that plans on going, so I dont think my direct supervisor will get to continue in her cushy position if she has no employees to manage... Ugh I am pissed!

Sorry fo rthe foul language and the long post. I just needed to vent!

Re: Job Relocation Drama

  • Dude! That is bullshit. I'm sorry that is happening to you. I agree you shouldn't go back. 4 hours of commute time each day is ridiculous. I can't believe they consider 50 miles no big deal. Assholes.

  • That really is a load of crap.

  • MissWhis  RIGHT! We are all so upset. I am currently 13 minutes from our office. No traffic... I have been with the company for 6 years and have always been dependable and hard working. I always have great reviews... I just dont understand how they can just basically say good ridence if you dont choose to relocate. And this is a HUGE well known nationwide company! It blows my mind!

  • This totally sucks!  I completely understand your frustrations.  I did want to say that you might want to be cautious about staying out on maternity leave and then not returning.  Some companies and locations can require you to pay back any maternity leave pay if you don't return to the company.  It is just something to keep in mind.

  • Our company doesnt pay maternity leave pay. It is short term disability then FMLA. So I wouldnt pay them back anything. And yes I am not saying a word to anyone about my plan. I am just so frustrated and the hormones are getting the best of my anger...

I will check though about unemployement. I thought you had to be laid off in order to collect. I will see what their policy is regarding relocation.

  • Dude, my office is moving locations while I'm out on maternity leave, too! When I come back, I have to go *three blocks* further!! So it's like our situations are the exact same, right? But honestly, *that* is an office change — a few blocks, or across town. 50 miles is a relocation. If the zip code is different, it's a relocation!

Is it a large company? Can you talk to HR about your concerns? It sounds like a super unsupportive workplace, so maybe not, but worth a shot? Either way, I'm sorry for the added stress in your life.
  • I will be looking for another job while I am out on Maternity Leave. At least it gives me some time to figure things out. I would drive 50 miles for a job if I didnt have to sit the horrendous amount of traffic... And to be away from my babies that long will not work for me....

2 hours each way sucks but I did it for nearly 3 years. If you need the job and the money commute times can be lousy. any way you could take the train or something and work or read while you commute? my company was deciding between closing our 10 floor high rise and moving all of us in the building an hour away but the outcry was so severe that they decided to move one of the smaller offices to us and perform major renovations on our building to make it work. I lucked out because I already commute an hour to this job and a 2 hour commute each way...again....would have made me miserable.

  • playingonadream  thank god you didnt have to do that drive. I just cant fathom being that far away from my DD and a newborn.... Just isnt going to happen. I was just hoping that they would at least have the decensy (SP) to lay us off so that we can collect unemployment rather than just make us fee like they give a shit. That is the hard part for me to swollow. I have given this company so much and they dont have the respect for me to be sure I am ok since they have decided to relocate. It just sucks.. :(

  • My DH was relocated with his job- they weren't flexible with the timeline, so we moved 4w before my due date. Then, while I was still home on maternity leave (thank god I was able to get a transfer it in my company), they cut his department & he was laid off. All of this with a fortune 200 company. Livid doesn't even begin to describe.

then again, you know the feeling at this point. Enjoy collecting that leave pay with no guilt! They screw you like that what do they expect?

  • I am so sorry - that completely sucks.

  • ksulli  that would push me over the edge! Im sorry you guys had to go through that... Its so hard to justify the way these companies treat their employees. AT this point I will no longer go above and beyond for this job... I will work as much as I feel taken care of by them... what a waste of 6 years...

So I guess I will bumping a lot more during the day ;-) LOL

  • FWIW it wound up working out for the best- he has a better position at a similar company now, and I wound up leaving the job I'd been in too (somewhat unfortunately- great company, awful hours, and with the transfer the reputation I'd built in my old office was sorta worthless), and we both are much happier with our jobs & work/life balance. Maybe you just need 2 years to get over it ;)

  • Rrrrrachel  BEST ADVISE EVER! Unforunately I am the employee that has always been very loyal and I work hard. That is just my personality. ;-) Sometimes I wish I had a more relaxed personality when it came to work....
