Anyone NOT doing the NT scan?

We did it with our first baby but decided not to this time around. My OB actually told me that we have zero risk factors and he thinks it's a waste so that kind of convinced us. The only reason I wish we were doing it is so I can see the baby again and I also want to see if my SCH is gone. It was only 1cm but I'm still nervous about it. Is anyone else skipping the NT scan?

  • The only testing we do is the a/s
  • We weren't offered one, so we don't get to see Baby G until the anatomy scan in Jan :(

  • We're not doing any of the genetic tests.
  • My OB don't do any testing unless you are higher risk until about 17-20 weeks. I was actually thinking about it and talkin to her this next apt about all that. We did an 9week US and some initial blood work but that was it. We hear the heart beat when we go in and I haven't had any bleeding.

  • We refused the testing. We are low risk and figure it is what it is if something is discovered.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • My ob didn't offer the NT scan to me. Maybe because I'm low risk. I dunno.
  • I am happy you posted this because I was starting to feel like everyone has done the NT.  We didn't do the NT scan.  We have had 2 US already (a dating one and one at my last apt because they couldn't hear the hb yet).   We are trying to limit the US -- they stress me out. We might take the blood test because we are both in our mid-30s but have yet to really decide on that.

2nd BFP 9/20/13, EDD 6/1/14 -- hoping for our sticky baby!

  • I didn't get it with my daughter and didn't with this baby either :) I would never abort it anyway so what's the point? There's also some risk with getting the test..
  • We did not do any genetic testing. It would have been amazing to see the baby, but we would have had to pay for it pretty much out of pocket.

  • Thank goodness I'm not the only one! After all the NT scan posts I was starting to think I was the only one. Thanks for the replies!!

I had my dating ultrasound at 7 weeks so it will be awhile until we see #2 at our anatomy scan. Can't wait!

  • No NT scan for me either..like PP I didn't want the extra worry! Also waiting until January for A/S.

  • We didn't do it either. I'd rather not spend the next few months worrying about something I can't change.

  • We are not going to have it done, though we would have opted to do it if it had been covered by insurance (primarily as an excuse to see the baby again prior to the anatomy scan).  Apparently, the test does not meet my insurance's criteria for coverage.

  • Like other posters, we didn't either and didn't want the added worrier for a baby we'd keep absolutely no matter what.  I put it in God's hands and that was it :)

  • I didn't have one, because I did the MaternT21 blood test. I did ask my doc about the NT scan, and she said there was no need, as the MaternT21 results indicated that all is well. I'm 34, and will be 35 at delivery. I have anxiety and worry a lot. Doc said I could do NT, but if I got a worrisome result, I would be more anxious until further testing. She said if I did an NT and results were questionable, the next step would have been the MaternT21, and I already did it. So that's my reason for not doing it.
  • Haha I wa starting to feel like a bad mom for opting out! I'm doing some more blood tests at 18 weeks but I did opt out of the NT. 1) I'm young and we have zero family history of any genetic defects and 2) I decided it didn't matter. Numbers and "chances" often just stress people out unnecessarily. My ob office made me feel weird for not getting it. They didn't pressure exactly, but I could tell they were thrown off about it. Must not be used to people just making their own judgments and saying no.

  • We're not doing any additional testing. I do kind of wish we were doing the scan, just to see LO again.

  • No NT scan here, either. We are low risk and would have to pay out of pocket due to our high deductible. However, if something is found at the anatomy scan, i would likely get additional testing then.

Are you thinking of an amnio, not the NT scan?
  • My OB didn't even ask me if I wanted one so nope.
  • We our doing the NT scan. We are older and hubby has Downs in his family. Not really worried however.

We will not terminate. We just want a heads up in case. His nephew had many issues when born so this way we might be able to prepare and Drs can know just in case.

  • We decided to have it done just for mental preparation if necessary. My dr's office offers it to all their patients because I am high risk and go to a perinatal center. We actually had the test done yesterday. Ultrasound came back looking great so no need to mentally prepare for that part of it! The rest is just trying to get this pregnancy to end successfully.
  • i did not. my doctor said i have no risk factors but NT are procedure with that office so i scheduled one but couldn't find childcare for it so i skipped it. and there was only like a month between the NT and anatomy scan so i was like whatever.
  • No ultrasound until 20 weeks for me
  • It was not offered to us and when I asked my dr. said he only does it for high risk patients, which were usually patients above age 35

I haven't. Didn't do it or have it offered with any of my kids. I am electing to do an ultrasound at 15 weeks, but it has nothing to do with my OB. So with my OB I'll only be getting the anatomy scan done. The elective ultrasound is also an anatomy scan.
  • I wasn't offered one but I'm low risk so no worries.

  • We had it scheduled for next week but my partner (who is the one pregnant) decided to cancel because she is worried about the false positive rate and concerned that it might make her stress the whole pregnancy. We don't see eye to eye on this. I'm disappointed but I respect her choice and don't want her to stress. Doesn't the maternity21 (sp?) have a very low false positive rate (less than .08) vs. the regular bloodwork and scan? I'm not sure I'll convince her to change her mind though.
  • Maternit21 has a lower false positive rate, but apparently some people just don't get a result at all due to lack of whatever markers they are looking for in the blood sample.

We were offered the test, but our doc seemed very "meh" on that one. Apparently she's had a fair amount of patients shell out a lot of money (as much as $700) and not get a result.

  • We're not. I'm like you though, I would like I see my baby!! I guess we'll have to wait until January.
  • We're doing it, but just to see the baby. After talking with my doctor this week, I had decided to not do it, and she gave me a requisition for a dating ultrasound instead, so we can still see the baby. I tried to cancel my NT scan appointment, but I've lost the contact info for the ultrasound clinic and they have no website, so... we're going anyway. Ours is fully covered by OHIP though, so we don't have insurance to worry about.

  • I opted out of all genetic testing. Just having ultrasounds.
  • I am calling my insurance company this week. If they cover it I will have it, if they do not I will not. Same with the blood test.

I think so. I'm just avoiding all of those tests, no point for me to get any of them really.
  • Plus the ob didn't offer any testing anyway. I don't want to go out of my way to worry.
  • I skipped it with my first (because my midwife said we were super low risk).  We are doing it with this pregnancy because I am 35 so the risk is higher.  I found it hard at the point where everyone on the board was getting them done and I didn't get the extra u/s, but as soon as that passed it wasn't a big deal to have skipped it.

  • We opted out of all genetic testing. We would not terminate either way, and I decided that I wanted to enjoy every moment of this pregnancy w/o added worry.

My cousin was told 100% that their baby had downs....he was born without downs, just had a really big head!
    image
  • No genetic testing for me- it would just make me worry more, and even if it comes back normal it is not 100% accurate so it could never fully reassure me anyway!
