I'm Jealous

Of all of you ladies who know what to name your babies.

I've got nothing.

Seriously.

Nothing.

There is not a single name that makes me go, "Yeahhh, that sounds like my kid." With every name, I either say "NAY" or "meh."

I'm honestly considering asking my mother for her opinion. And we agree on nothing and she has the worst taste ever. I wish my DD was old enough to pick because I just might let her....

What's DD's name? I'm sure the ladies here could start you off with a few trillion ideas... Boy or girl?

    DD is Norah Mae

I only like "real" names, traditional, classic.

No idea on boy or girl. A/s isn't until after Christmas, unless we get a lucky sneak peek next week.

ETA: DH wants a girl's middle name to rhyme with Mae, so he's liking Rae. A boy will have the middle name Ottus (family name).

  • Aww sorry to hear that! We had a hard time at first too because we were both so picky. We both decided it was best go back to names that weren't too bad, otherwise our kid would be nameless. In the end, we found names that at first we were just "meh" about and now we love them. I just kept saying the names out loud and it sounded great.
How did you come up with your daughter's name? Maybe go with that same process? I hope you find names soon!!
  • @P&Slove

We've knew her name for nearly a decade. It was one of those names that when we were dating we said "If we ever have a daughter, she'll be Norah Mae." I wish I could duplicate that process!!

This may not be much help, but honestly it just came to me/us. When we found out we were pregnant I had two boys names I was in love with (Samuel and Thomas). DH didn't want to discuss names at all until we knew what we were having. Last week I was just throwing out names and said ''what do you think of Ian?'' He said I really like it''. I've been stuck on it. We found out yesterday it was a boy, I just knew that was it. It was the same way with DS.
How did you decide on DD's name?
  • Nora and Amelia?  Sabrina? Cassandra?   :-)
Nora and ... boys are harder. We chose Christopher - I like traditional names too but other family names I tried NOT to use - Samuel, Michael, Daniel, James... One will be a middle name.

  • For a boy I keep thinking Nicholas ....like the movie "Nick and Nora", lol . That would be cute though IMO :)

  • Give DD a baby book and see if she points to anything.  (or tears out anything I suppose, if your kid is anything like my kid.  He really knows how to make his librarian mother twitchy.)
  • Funny. I've got nothing for names. My DD is also a Nora.

Her name was so easy. Now, I don't love anything for a boy or girl. We never even had a boy name for her I can fall back on!

  • Have you checked out Nymbler.com? I thought it was a great site at suggesting names based on names you like.
  • Hey at least you aren't fighting with your husband over names...that is the WORST! My hubs is having commitment issues with our baby name and it's driving me insane!

  • Bring Back Beatrice is a pretty good baby name book with traditional names in it.  It has some attitude, and it's not as much like the phone book as some of the name books.
  • Another recommendation for Nymbler.

  • Are you SURE your DD doesn't have a good name choice? Mine has two gingerbread people and a snowman and named them Mittens, Mittens, and Mama, respectively. But for seriousness, Nymbler is great. And it will come up with some hilarious old names to keep you entertained even if you still don't find anything you love.

  • I'm right there with you. We've been over 5000+ names and I don't think a single one is "right." Don't know what we're going to do.

  • We tend to lean toward more traditional "real" names too. I'll throw out some names for you that we had on the short lists: Lola, Lorraine, Olivia, Meredith, Vivian, Alice and Evelyn for girls. Owen, Oliver, Elliott, Ryland, Henry, William, Kenneth, Caleb, Eli, and Wyatt for boys. Hope that helps!!

  • If you really can't think of anything, you can always wait until the baby is born to pick names. I have close friends that have done that with their last 2 kids. Their daughter was nameless for like a week after she was born. You certainly don't have to have something picked out right away.

  • We are having a REALLY hard time with names this time too, we have a list of names we like, but there is nothing we LOVE. Blahhhhh. Hoping once we find out gender it will help us focus more.
  • I like classic names as well. Nora Mae is a really pretty name.

We like Audrey Jean if we're having a girl. (Which I think sounds cute with Rae, as well).  I also love Charlotte, Emma, Cora and Clara.
  • What came to mind for me was Mandy Rae when you said that middle name. And James Ottus. Idk what you think about those...
  • I'm in the same boat. Everything is meh, and then most of those don't make it past DH.

  • Your daughter's name is beautiful. The only name that I know I am using is Mae as a middle name....after my mom. I can't seem to get attached to a first name....I'm hoping it will come with time :)

  • We are in the same boat. Knew DD's name for ages and this one, we've got nothing. DD has suggested Vampire. Then again she is on a naming craze and naming everything vampire.

  • We are clueless as well. DD took our 1 name. I'm waiting until we find out the sex to even begin thinking then I'm seriously thinking about DH and I going through baby name books page by page.

  • We're naming our daughter Victoria May if we had a boy he would've been Blake or Bryce Alexander. Maybe one of those work substitute Rae for May
  • That how I feel if we have a girl... There just isn't one I absolutely love like I did with DD#1. My husband is set on one, and I think it's pretty, but my daughters name just fit her perfect and I want this one to too? But I guess I wouldn't know that until she is born anyways...
  • We are totally up a creek if this baby is a boy. Not only have most of our favorites been taken by close family members- but we also have very different ideas about what makes a "good" boys name so agreeing on one is a nightmare. We literally went through an entire baby book last pregnancy trying to find just one name we could both agree on- and now I don't want to use it for this baby for some reason.

But we're totally set for a girl, thank god.

Amen to that.  And, like you, I've got absolutely nothing for my kid.  It's looking like his/her name will be "hey you".
  • Do u know whatcha having?
  • @hatchetface, since I was like 7 and saw my girl, I've loved the name Vada. My real life suggestion is Vera. I think it's beautiful. I also like Annabel, Clara, Evangeline (NN Eva or Evan).

Boy names were really hard for us.

I like Sophie Rae, Natalie Rae or Amelia Rae.  For boys Timothy Ottus, Mason Ottus, Michael Ottus.

  • Dunno why, but as soon as I read the middle name suggestion of Rae, I thought of Alyssa Rae. It will come to you in time :)

  • Lenoir is a family name that we might use. I also like Cecilia and Lucy (although it sounds pretty cutesy to me). Could they have the same middle name?? Cecilia Mae is pretty.
