Drinking

Re: Drinking

  • There is a pretty good selection of non alcoholic wine at Total Wine. I haven't tried it, but I've given it a thought. I don't think a glass of the real thing would do any harm, but so far smelling any alcohol has turned me off. A glass of Chardonnay or Pinot noir sounds heavenly, though.

  • I've had the "YOU CAN'T DRINK WHILE PREGNANT" thing drilled into my head since taking sex ed, and I just can't see how I'd be able to enjoy a glass of wine or beer without those thoughts making me feel like I was doing something wrong. The anxiety wouldn't be worth it to me. I miss it, but I can wait.

That said, I see nothing wrong with drinking a small amount of alcohol in moderation during pregnancy, with consent from your Dr. No judgement here.

  • Well @Peanut2929 I hate to break it to you, but the medical community as a whole doesn't agree with you (neither does most of the world).  So kiss my ass and judge away if you have a problem with me having half a glass of wine after my doctor (at a huge cutting-edge research university) said it's okay.

I'm sure you still get in your car regularly... do you have any idea how dangerous driving is?  Car accidents kill tons of fetuses every year.  TONS.
I've been wondering if these people who keep making posts like Peanut's are just missing the parts in all of the posts here where doctors have said it's ok (and for the record, mine has said that the occasional glass of wine is fine as well) or if they are being deliberately obtuse.

I don't think any of us are planning on hitting the hard stuff but a little of wine here and there? If my doctors say it's ok, I think I'm going to go with that.

Me too! Reallllly looking forward to it.

@ 13 weeks, I had about an inch of white wine. I brought it to a dinner party and it was one of my wine club shipments, and it was a varietal I had never tried before. It did feel kind of weird to be drinking while pregnant (the taboo is strong in me apparently) but my rational brain knows it's fine. And I'm very glad I got to taste that wine before it went bye-bye forever.

ETA: just went over to J14 and read their alcohol thread. wow. @alabamapinks gives our redrosepinkdaisy a run for her money! I think RRPD is crazier overall but alabama wins for hysteria. "I am literally crying"

  • I was watching food network the other day, that show Unwrapped, where they tell you how certain foods are made.. well apparently there's a company that makes wine, and then later removes the alcohol content. It supposedly looks, smells, and tastes the same sans the alcohol. It's by a company called "Fre". I don't even know if they sell it in liquor stores, I've never seen or heard of it before but I thought it was interesting. Here's their website www.frewines.com

They'd don't remove the alcohol, they remove the sulfites. People who get headaches from drinking wine is because they usually can't handle the sulfites in wine. My bf's mom drinks Frey because of it. It still has alcohol in it tho.

Well on the episode they talked about and showed how they removed the ethanol. And the website says no alcohol. So I don't know...

ETA: I just read under the FAQ on their website and they said there is less than half a percent of alcohol, or the equivalent of the amount in orange juice if left on the counter over night... So I'll take that as pretty much alcohol free

I don't take my chances. I don't judge, and the odds are in our favor. But odds are just that. For so many to worry about miscarriage, foods, drugs, etc, it seems inconsistent to risk a silly drink that may or may not harm baby. The effort to abstain is too small to avoid a potentially negative consequence to child. It also is interesting thinking in terms of someone offering your baby a "sip" of beer. Would you say yes?? I would. JK. It's just kind of a personal call. I sure as hell been craving a delicious swig or 3 of whiskey!

    Interesting article from WebMD:

    https://www.webmd.com/baby/features/drinking-alcohol-during-pregnancy

I think it's best to discuss with your doctor before drinking any alcohol, but it is a personal decision.
According to this, there is no amount of alcohol proven to be safe.
Well of course not. Who's going to volunteer to be in the studies where they figure out the cut-offs?

Again, no one here has been talking about drinking every day or getting drunk. No one is talking about the hard stuff either, it's the odd glass of wine. Absolutely, it is a personal decision but no one should be shamed for making a choice that is different from what someone else would decide. Evidently, a lot of our doctors are ok with it, so even less reason to judge. I don't think any of us are making uneducated or uninformed choices.

  • I asked my doc Tuesdya at my appointment. I rarely drink anyway, but with the holidays coming up, I asked if a glass of wine would be okay. She said no, it's just not worth the risk... there is still debate on the effects of one drink vs. a lot of drinks, so no drinking is safest... Like I said, I rarely drink anyway, so it's not a big sacrifice on my part. (I actually don't like wine anyway... an earlier post about a cranberrita made me think about it.)
  • If I may offer one more example (on top of the countless others already added), my sister was born in 1975, and the doctor actually "prescribed" gin and tonics to ease my mom's Braxton Hicks contractions at around 6 months. Funny, too, because my mom was not even a little bit of a drinker back then...she said she drank them down holding her nose like cough syrup. My sister came out perfectly fine after multiple gin and tonics. I'm sure someone taking a sip or small glass of wine here or there wouldn't hurt in the least. I'm sure this story is amongst countless others like it. The bottom line is, it's the personal choice of the mother, whether or not she wants to do it based on her own feelings/findings and the preference/advice of her doctor.

Fun fact: My sister hardly ever drinks, but when she does, gin and tonics are her favorite!

My Mother was prescribed wine by her doctor to help with BM supply with me. She didn't drink before this. (She was a good Southern Baptist and ate away her problems instead of drinking.) I fully attribute the wine in her BM to both my high IQ and my raging alcoholism.

Edit: I was kidding in the last sentence.
