Drinking

I am curious what everyone's thoughts are on drinking during pregnancy.  Obviously not taking shots, but the occasional glass of wine or beer.  I am pretty sure I would sell my arm for a glass of Pinot Noir right now if it magically was not bad for the baby...sigh....

Re: Drinking

  • I just asked my doctor thy very question at my last appointment, because I too was dying for a glass or red wine! He said an occasional glass won't hurt the baby. So I had one, but drank plenty of water with it just to be safe ;) I am 15 weeks along.

  • Personally I'm not a drinker to begin with so I'll definitely not drink during pregnancy but my doctor said "A glass of wine here and there is fine. Women in France, Italy and Spain continue to have wine while pregnant and are fine."
  • Personally I go by the latest studies and do a little less than what they say is okay. I can have 200mg of caffeine a day? Alright, 200mg a week it is.

What I hear is one unit (no specifications on what a unit is) of wine occassionally is okay. By occassionally, I think the study said once a week, and I translated it to every other/every three weeks.

  • I think a glass here and there is fine. I wouldn't over indulge and I would prolly ask my OB before I did just incase.

  • unfortunately I'm less of a wine person and lean more towards vodka. At least I wasn't addicted so I just miss drinking, but still. DH got me sparkling cider and had me pretend I was getting wasted on champagne at a posh event. XD

Well, there's quite an entertaining thread going on June 14 about this very topic if you're so inclined.

Emily Oster reviews a number of studies in "Expecting Better" about the effects of alcohol in pregnancy. It's worth a read if you're considering it, and you should do further research if you feel compelled while making a choice. Every pregnant woman and their medical professional is going to have a different opinion based on how they interpret the information available to them.

At my last appointment, my midwife told me that her sister, who lives in Italy, was cautioned "not to drink more than two glasses of wine a day." I may indulge in 1/2-1 glass or so on occasion, and after all I've read and talked with my doctors about, I'd be more than comfortable comfortable doing so.

    Edited for clarity.

  • @busterbeagle- I gave up, but now I am going back!
  • @busterbeagle -- So, I think the fun really starts on the 3rd or 4th page -- a lady in a superman costume is calling CPS on everyone who said they will drink because they LOVE POISONING BABIES. Or something to that effect.

I like how the lady calling it poison also drops the f bomb.  :)
  • I don't drink at all during pregnancy (although I know I'm in the minority as far as our conversations on here have gone) but that chick is BSC.

  • What. That sounds way more entertaining than the thread that proceeded my post about alcohol. #jealous.
  • With my first I had the occassional sip from my husband during my 2nd tri, and a small glass of wine 1x every two weeks or so in my third tri. Will likely do the same this time around. Maybe less, because it doesn't seem to be as big of a deal to me with this pregnancy as it was with my first.

Thank you for noting that she is in a superman costume! I was like "really? No one on the June board is mentioning this?" Lol to me it just added to her craziness.

  • Someone over there asked who the hell gets a buzz from half a glass of wine...*raises hand shyly*

Hahaha ill cheers to that. But how awesome was that image one poster added of the HUGE wine glass. It was beautiful and I'd like one. STAT.
  • I have been told the a drink a week is alright past 2nd tri. Not sure how I feel yet. I tried looking for that post on the June board and got completely distracted by the post re: smoking pot to alleviate morning sickness.

I think it's perfectly fine once in awhile.. I have the occasional glass of wine with dinner.. I did it with all my pregnancies my hubby is Portuguese and when we go to his parents for dinner it's a MUST to have wine pregnant or not. Also my midwife says it's fine in moderation and your not taking shots of course

I also will have double the water ratio to the wine

  • That was crazy. oddly enough, that one post about the effects of adrenaline vs dopamine in neurological development hit home. It actually made me calm down and I suspect I'll be less anxious now that I know the science behind "sweetie, I need you to breathe because your stress is probably not best for baby".

Do I even have to mention that hearing DH phrase it "stress releases toxins" made me freak out more?

Also, Twat waffle. I appreciate the addition to my vocabulary.

  • Yessss. Twat waffle. My new fav word combo! I haven't drank while pregnant but not against it at a reasonable amount (glass of wine with dinner every few weeks). My friends OB gave her the ok to drink a glass of wine or beer 1x per week.
  • I second the Pinot Noir...not a huge drinker but I love red wine in the fall & winter!

Twat Waffle and Douchecanoe are two of my favorites from here. I have used them IRL with my girlfriends. I think at least two of them spit out their beverages from laughing. Well worth it. ;)

  • Woah. Holy cap happy crazies on June14. My blood pressure went up just reading page three.

Thanks for your general calmness May14. (Except for the CD thread from yesterday. I read that like everyone had just eaten 12 pixie sticks each. Love you ladies. Made me laugh.)

Thank you. I don't have an insert image option. I'm blaming this on a mobile fail and calling it a day. :)

  • Flame away but I think drinking during pregnancy is selfish and careless, at best.  It's 9 freaking months.  If you can't put down the alcohol for 9 months, which is the only GUARANTEED safe thing for baby is to abstain completely, then I think shame on you.  No one will ever convince me that it's worth the risk.  It's 9 months.  I would think you could wait to do the only proven thing that is safe for baby.

  • Yes, because the Surgeon General's warning on every alcohol beverage which specifically states do not consume if you are pregnant is definitely my personal opinion that alcohol puts the fetus at risk.

I HATE the word twat waffle. There was some moron on my original BMB who used it in every other post. Plus, I used to love waffles and now I almost permanently associate them with twats. Uck.

  • Peanut2929 I'm glad you have strong beliefs and you stand by them.

It's to each is own in my opinion. I haven't decided if I will drink or not. I keep getting offers for a sip here or a glass there, but it seems to soon. I'm only 13 1/2 weeks. I still am nauseous most of the time so I haven't had any erge and the smell makes me gag.
  • Thansk Jillzy for respecting my opinion.  I believe we are all entitled to have our own opinions, regardless of whether people agree with them or not.  I am sure we could start a thread on are you for or against vaccinations, for or against co-sleeping, for or against working full time with kids at home, etc. and you would get people who say they think people are wrong to do XYZ, and you'd get people who say that it's OK to do XYZ.  The beauty of it is that no one is doing anything wrong by having their own belief system, right?

  • I was watching food network the other day, that show Unwrapped, where they tell you how certain foods are made.. well apparently there's a company that makes wine, and then later removes the alcohol content. It supposedly looks, smells, and tastes the same sans the alcohol. It's by a company called "Fre". I don't even know if they sell it in liquor stores, I've never seen or heard of it before but I thought it was interesting. Here's their website www.frewines.com
