I don't think you should be able to cut dressing into "squares" think brownies. This is how my aunt makes it and no one says anything so she just keeps bringing it. I always make stove top for back up. But seriously am i missing something? Is the the proper way to make dressing or is she totally ruining it?

Also I HATE it when my cousin brings his family of 7 and they bring 1 freaking box of suddenly salad. Like seriously if you don't have time to cook or whatever you could at least bring soda, napkins, plates, liquor, wine, ect. Meanwhile my family of three brings like 5 sides and a dessert.
I'm finally putting my foot down this year at one Thanksgiving.  My grandmother makes the WORST dressing--rye bread (ew) and you usually find a turkey bone or two in in (hurk).  I'm making and bringing my own to share.  Even her gravy sometimes has bones.  She thinks it's hilarious.

ETA--NO, you should not be able to cut it into squares.  Ew.
    WHUT.
My mother does this sometimes too. She also likes to cook the liver ect and chunk it up and put it in the gravy. It's soo disgusting. I'm almost to the point of jar gravy.

  • Do people not bake their stuffing/dressing? I've never heard of pan frying it. Am I in the minority? LMK

Too dense plus baked is my guess.
She bakes it. She also makes a "regular dressing" and "oyster dressing" which is only twice as disgusting. I really want to tell her to quit wasting her money on all of the ingredients!
  • @ReeseFox I am really intrigued by this fruitcake recipe.  I actually like fruitcake when it's good.  Will you share it?

@stoneycakes My aunt is the keeper of the recipe, I'll try to snap a pic of it when we get together next weekend.

ETA It also makes enough batter for a couple dozen cakes, so any calculations to make it smaller is on you. :D

Thanks!  I really do want it.  Do you think I could make it for Christmas if I only soaked the fruit for a little while?

Yeah, you can totally make it for Christmas. We don't typically soak it for a year (usually a couple months) but we couldn't coordinate schedules last year so it never got used. Apparently my grandma would just keep her jar of fruit on the counter and add to it all year so that's what we did.

This would take at least 3-4 years for me to get over.
This happened to me last Christmas at my IL's house. For some reason MIL started the roast late so dinner wasn't ready til like 10 pm and I was putting K to bed and they ate all of it without me. H tried to save a plate for me and my BIL ate it. I had Trader Joe's butter chicken at midnight. It was the worst Christmas ever (for many reasons).
    Did this happen in Tacoma?

  • I didn't even know what they were until I was probably 15.  I just always ate her stuffing and loved it, then found out and was like, meh, clearly I like them.

  • She also made a dish that was just livers and gizzards with peppers, and you ate it over rice. Yum.  I know, I might be gross, but I like everything.  Thank god DH is the same way, we can eat all the organ meat together.

OK I'm just gonna say it: Stuffing (or dressing, whatever) with just onions and celery in it sounds awful. I can't understand how this is a dish people look forward to. It's just soggy bread. With onions and celery. NO.

There I said it! I had to get that off my chest. :))

I can't take the risk of anyone bringing stove top or something nasty to our dinner. So if I get asked I tell them to bring ice or alcohol.
I will be the one bringing stove top. Actually DD's absolute FAVORITE food is stuffing---and DH's family recipe has egg in it so she can't have their stuffing. I will partake in their amazing homemade stuffing, while Reese gets to eat Stove Top. I am thankful that stove top is egg free---she ABSOLUTELY loves it; and I get to add extra chicken and veggies in it for her.

  • I have 2 health insurance potential UOs.

First, I used to kind of agree with the crazy FOX news pundits that it was unfair for Obama to have told people they could keep their plans and that turn out not to be entirely true. Now my work is changing to a super sucky plan which more than meets the minimum standards according to the government. I still don't feel that I'm qualified or knowledgeable enough to make this declaration, but I think I agree with getting rid of substandard plans now.

Second, I think more people need to make putting money into their health a priority. I'm not talking about those who are debating putting food on the table or going for a checkup. I'm talking about the people (at least around here) who complain about a $20 copay, but will blow 10x that on luxuries. In times of crisis, people always say at least you've got your health as if that's the most valued thing. Well, healthcare isn't free, but it is important and we should spend money on it! And help those who can't afford it acquire it.

My SIL is trying to guilt DH and I into coming over to her house for Thanksgiving.

DH and I have had a system for 12 years.  One year we spend alone, the next year with my parents, the next year with DH's family.  Then we start over again.  It works for us.  This year we're having the alone Thanksgiving, but my parents are coming over anyway (at my invitation) because I'm an only child and I didn't want them to be alone on Thanksgiving.

SIL has been married to BIL for, like, 2 years.  Last year we were at their house.  She spent a good amount of time bragging about how little money she spent on Thanksgiving food and how she doesn't understand why people spend so much money.   The plan was that DH would eat while I watched the girls and then we would switch.

By the time the switch came (YOU GUESSED IT) there was no food left.  None.  I had three bites of potatoes and a small roll.  Not only did SIL not buy enough food, she let everyone take seconds and thirds before I'd even had firsts.  HOST PARTY FOUL.

So, yeah.  This year, she can bite me.  I'm not going over to her house anymore and if I do, I'm bringing my own food because homey don't play that, yo.
That sucks.  Why didn't DH make you a plate? DH foul?
ETA:  It was covered, sowwy!  Didn't read far enough. I'll try not to mbenit4 this thread.
