Paleo ladies who quit paleo when they got KU

I was on the paleo diet for quite awhile before I became pregnant.  As soon as I got that second line, my diet and hard work went right out the window.  I have seen such a drastic change all around since stopping paleo.  I gained 10 pounds the first month, my acne is bad (probably a mix of hormones in there too), my bowel movements are just down right awful, my energy level is crap (also probably pregnancy related)... Anyone else who threw paleo out the window having a difficult time processing carbs and sugars?

Re: Paleo ladies who quit paleo when they got KU

  • I wasn't strict Paleo, but I ate no processed foods and just stuck to lean meats, veggies, and greek yogurt for the most part. Around week 6 I couldn't eat at all. I don't weigh myself, but I could tell I lost weight. Then by week 7.5 I suddenly found out that if I ate constantly I felt less sick. Unfortunately, meat and vegetables sounded disgusting to me so I started eating lots of sugar and carbs. Now, for some reason my aversions are totally gone, but I can't stop eating the chips/crackers/bread/muffins etc. I feel really gross! I loved how I felt when I ate more Paleo-ish and hope that I can wean myself off of the sugar.
I, too, now have acne which I never had and my energy is terrible.  I don't know if that is related to pregnancy or to my diet.
    Anyway, I can relate completely!

  • ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i HAVE GONE FROM 134 TO 147 IN 4 WEEKS.

I cant stomach anything paleo ish - i want bread and pasta. I had to stop wodding because of shortness of breath and frankly i am so damn tired. I have acne and my nausea is rediculous.

I have found some good soup recipes so that I can at least have some healthy crockpot recipes with a little pasta in them ....

I was down to less than 35 grams of sugar per day. My lifts were PRing and I was about to go for a sub 5 fran this month... all gone. I am now at planet fitness with an elliptical:)
  • @WaitingforEden and @brookeadrenaline I pretty much eat bagels and crackers all day.  It's terrible.  My body doesn't know how to process it anymore but the thought of meat and veggies makes me vomit just thinking about it.  Seriously, I'm gagging right now...

I don't even know how to begin weening myself off of it and back to paleo.  It's so difficult.

WOD's... don't even get me started on WOD's.  I haven't done a WOD in 2 months!!!  I've been trying to go to a step aerobics class once a week... again, trying... to go...

  • I am not paleo, but I eat very low carb normally.

All I have to say is that right now I am eating a Jimmy John's Veggie Sub (on bread!) for the first time after years of their un-wich lettuce wraps. And it is DELICIOUS!

  • Well I haven't made a philosophical decision to abandon the paleo approach. In fact, I'm aiming to stick with it as much as possible (and my midwife group recommends it) but I am having a really hard time with it. A chunk of meat and side of veggies is just not at all appealing. All I want to eat is a grilled cheese, maybe some soup, and apples. So I eat a lot of apples.

I try to stick to the diet, usually make it 1-2 days, and then by the 3rd day I'm so famished that I give in an eat a huge quantity of bread. No good. I haven't gained any weight yet though because I'm hungry 70% of the time; I just can't bring myself to eat anything. It all looks so gross.

I thought I'd feel great during this pregnancy - eating a protein rich diet is supposed to reduce morning sickness - but somehow I felt a lot better last time when I was eating 3 cookies a day. I'm not sure how natural it is to go low carb during pregnancy - it's not what I naturally want anyways. I'm going to talk to my provider about it at my next appointment.

I am right there with you!  Not able to do paleo these days because meat makes me want to barf and so does most veggies.  I have been eating what I can, at this point (crackers, Cheez its, cuties, peanut butter toast and chicken noodle soup).  And when I have a good day (feel nauseous only 65% of the day versus every waking minute), then I try to throw in some old paleo favorites.  But, it has been tough and I have twins in there to feed.  My energy level is zero, I rarely exercise (thanks a lot nausea and fatigue!), skin got bad at 10 weeks (but find if I limit dairy that takes care of itself...also went to Lush and bought some amazing all natural skin care products that are helping a ton), went days without bowel movements, etc etc.  But, it is all worth it.  And like you mentioned...many of these symptoms are heightened by hormones right now.  I will be paleo again, when I can.  In the meantime, I am not going to be too hard on myself about it.

  • Like TigerLily, I haven't been a strict paleo follower, but generally had been eating very low carb.

This past week I have been wanting more carbs (breads and pasta)... I have not increased my overall calorie intake much compared to normal, but I am beginning to feel so much more bloated.  Not sure if it's the carbs or the pregnancy. lol  But I do know that even before I got pregnant that if I increased my intake of breads too much my stomach would bloat up within a couple of days.

  • You have just described me. I am in same boat. Going to TRY to clean it up this week in hopes it helps the fatigue- but bread is so good for nausea ....
  • *raises hand* I'm actually primal, but all of that was out the window when my morning sickness and food aversions kicked in. No meat has been cooked in my house since then. I think part of the reason I feel so exhausted is from taking the standard advice of eating 6 carby meals, but I can't keep anything else down. High protein is a no go! I've been living off of mini wheats cereal, cheese, soup, fruit, the occasional salad, and yogurt. Deplorable diet compared to what I'm used to but I feel like death, so it's kind of whatever at this point. I'll get back to primal eating once my little one arrives.
  • I had been eating paleo for ~ 2 years and it went out the window as well.  Now I'm just in second tri and able to get (almost) back to it again.  Don't stress yourself out - eat what you can and get back to it when your body can handle it!  On one hand it has been nice to try those things that I hadn't eaten in so long.  It's weird I never even missed them when eating paleo, but it was like I had an unstoppable attraction to them once pregnant.  Soft pretzels particularly.  I would eat a whole one on my way to the gym after work.  Hello gluten baby!
  • Same here. I think part of my feeling so crappy is because i am eating crappy foods because i feel crappy- lol. I did get some chicken jn me today. I am enjoying the things i never eat- but i miss the regimen of eating clean. I am making a bread baby for sure!
Will be helpful to have others in here after baby arrives- i plan to raise my baby on clean eating habits- no processed anything- will need support i am sure....
