Re: The long do not eat list of food

  • I haven't really changed my eating habits that much. I don't drink alcohol or coffee anyway so...yeah.
As soon as I get over this first trimester grossness I'n going to just focus on eating healthy food. Vegetable have been really gross this time around.

Well, I can't afford heroine... Do you think crack in moderation is a good substitute?

  • Raw/undercooked meats and fish, runny eggs, and alcohol.

  • Alcohol and runny eggs  . . .  oh how I miss the runny eggs.   I have been substituting a fried egg and cheese sandwhich  on white toast and it is NOT the same.   I have coffee daily and will throughout.   I get the most horrendous caffeine headaches and my OB prefers me to drink the coffee than have a migraine everyday . . . but she also makes sure to tell me to drink about a lakes worth of water.

  • Most of the things I "avoid" I don't really eat pregnant or not. I'm not a big alcohol person, I only drink caffeine maybe once a week, I always try to avoid artificial sweeteners etc. if I'm craving a deli sandwich I'll eat one, but it's seldom, I don't worry about cheeses because everything I buy (soft or not) is pasteurized
  • I told my husband I can't give blow jobs because semen even a tiny bit could be detrimental to the baby.
other than that i do everything in moderation except lunch meat which is fucking disgusting hot or cold.

  • cook anything with nitrates/nitrites (salami, pepperoni, etc)

Doesn't deli meat usually have nitrates/nitrites? (Serious question not snark)
  • No alcohol or drugs, and I was finally able to easily quit smoking since when I got pregnant, the smell started making me sick! (YAY! After almost 16 years and trying to quit over and over with no luck, I'm finally free!) I've cut back on caffeine, though I was doing that already to help my anxiety...just cut back a bit more now, for baby.

I don't really like a lot of the other things you ladies are talking about- runny eggs (my husband eats his that way and it made me nauseous even before I got pregnant), sushi (tried it once, not my thing), never had raw milk nor have I tried most other cheeses, big cheddar, swiss, provolone fan, but don't really eat much else.

Seafood has been a big one for me- I LOVE seafood, but I decided to cut way back (I guess I'm a, 'better safe than sorry' kinda gal) To help in that, the baby apparently doesn't approve of most seafood anyway. Shrimp (one of my favorites) now makes me sick and really just the thought of most others makes me nauseous. I'm hoping once the sickness dies down, I'll be able to enjoy some of it again since it really is beneficial to have some fish, in moderation.

I didn't realize that lunch meat was such a big "no-no", not that I eat it extremely often. A cold turkey and provolone from Subway seems to be one of the things that, when nothing else sounds good or everything we talk about eating makes me nauseous, is one of the few things I can still eat and keep down and I was told that, especially with severe sickness, if it sounds good, eat it! (within reason, of course!)

  • Yeah, I had a jersey mikes Italian hoagie the other day and it was delicious. With Charlie I had a glass of wine here and there after second tri. I guess I'm a bad example!

  • Smoked salmon is actually a bigger listeria risk than raw salmon.

Does any one actually research this stuff before they declare a food unsafe, or do y'all just follow whatever old wives tales you've read online?

  • Considering I didn't know you were even supposed to avoid most of this stuff, I haven't been avoiding much. I've had medium rare steak, runny eggs, herbal tea, cold pepperoni, probably some artificial sweeteners, and soft cheese. The only things I've been staying away from are alcohol and regular coffee or espresso. Also, I haven't had a single type of medicine except prenatal vitamins since I found out. Most of the foods they say to stay away from just seem so silly to me.

I also saw someone say you aren't supposed to have bagged lettuce? I've been having packed salads for one almost every day.

  • @Lcgroenewe  I think people have mentioned that while some people freak out over the "usual" items that might be contaminated with listeria, there are often issues with things like spinach or lettuce.  No one is saying to skip bagged lettuce, just be aware of the risks of anything you eat.

I thought someone posted something earlier about nitrites/nitrates being a non-issue these days.  Am I mis-remembering?

Sushi and booze. I don't drink much so it's not a big problem for me. Thr sushi on the other hand I would love right now
Then eat sushi.  The only limitations on sushi are the same as on all seafood, don't eat too much that's high in mercury.   Sushi is flash frozen, so it doesn't really fall in to the same "raw" list that seems to be thrown around so much.

From what I remember, and I could be wrong, the way the nitrites break down it does something, but having enough Vit C makes it a non issue or something.  Either way, they're pretty much fine now from what I've been told.  Moderation and all.

  • ABOUT SUSHI!

Last pregnancy I still ate non-raw sushi rolls and I plan to do that this time too once I get to a point where I feel like eating it. Preggo-edible sushi is stuff such as smoked salmon rolls because that's not raw, or shrimp rolls [they have to cook shrimp], or anything with imitation crab in it like California rolls. Some sushi places, especially the smaller local owned style places, you can ask them to alter your favorite rolls and sub in a non-raw - they are going to notice your belly anyway, they will know why you're asking lol. For example, Philadelphia rolls here are normally made with raw salmon, I ask for them to be made with smoked salmon and voila I can eat it, I do the same thing with this one particular spicy avocado tuna roll and ask for the roll made with shrimp instead. You can totally still get your sushi on! Plus add some miso soup and a ginger salad makes a really healthy meal.

Not to pop your bubble, but the risk in smoked salmon is higher than eating raw sushi...which is not risk at all. As long as you are eating from a reputable business, and it's not a high mercury fish, you are perfectly ok. It's actually more risky and dangerous to eat oranges or fruit from the grocery store. Don't get me wrong, I still eat smoked salmon too, but it is much more of a risk than raw salmon.

  • The only thing I truly stayed clear of last pregnancy, and likely will again with this one, is alcohol, though I truly do miss my rather tall glasses of wine.

Otherwise, I just ate sushi (both raw and cooked) and some mussels today for lunch.  I do (and previously did) follow the precautions about how much seafood to actually eat and stayed primarily away from fish with high mercury content, but otherwise I feel its fair game.  Also a big fan of raw oysters.
