The long do not eat list of food

Ya know those do not eat list of food? Where is lists almost everything we eat? Well, some of us still eat our deli sandwiches. And some of us in our 3rd tri will  have a glass of wine. And sushi, some of us will still eat sushi. And caffeine.

Is there one food that you will absolutely not touch while you are pregnant? What is that one thing you will not do while preg?

    Heroin.
HAHAHAHA.... this is literally what I tell all my friends I'm avoiding. "Everything moderation, except heroin."

In all seriousness, I've eaten soft cheeses, plan to have a little wine, and am otherwise not too concerned with what goes in my body. That said, I'm also a vegetarian so avoiding raw fish, deli meat, etc., hasn't been a problem so far!

  • I have been craving raw oysters so that is what got me thinking about it.

  • Alchohol, caffeine, aspertame in high doses and undercooked meat and eggs are all things I will not touch while pregnant. I heat my deli meat until steaming and make sure everything is pasteurized. The two things I don't care about are sprouts and soft serve. I'll take my chances on those.
  • And I got a batch of eggs straight from farm that I was not going to pass up.

  • Alcohol and raw oysters. Everything else in moderation, although I have cut WAY back on Diet Coke.

I've cut back on sushi, but not by much. I still get it twice a week. I'm just careful what I order and haven't been trying any new places. I figure if I've been eating at a place for years and never got sick, chances are I can trust them for the next few months as well.

  • I've been craving salmon nigiri so baddddd
  • Alcohol, chai tea, lunchmeat, pretty much whatever is in the list I avoid.

  • Aspartame. It's pretty much like rat poison for my body. It makes me really sick. Also, alcohol. But everything else is free game. i collect my eggs from our chickens and eat my eggs over easy, drink raw milk, and eat my lunch meat cold. I just make sure more things are organic in our home now.
  • @ellyd14 where's the support? I don't see a medical journal attached...

You're not supposed to have chai tea?!? Oopsy. I've had a latte like everyday

    Oh and I've has sushi.
    And lunch meat

No alcohol, cigarettes and I've def cut down on my heroine. ;)
  • The common answer, alcohol.  Other than that, I pretty much eat what I want.  I'm not a seafood person so I don't have to worry about that part of the list.  I still have my morning coffee, maybe a soda, and I made cookie dough tonight, that I will definitely devour!

What's wrong with chai tea? I drank it every once in a while with DD. I didn't know it was a no-no?

I'd like to know the problem with chai tea, too.  It's been my go-to morning beverage since I'm limiting coffee.

  • I'm assuming chai was listed because of caffeine, but it has less than coffee, so I still drink it anyways.

The only thing I can thing of would be because of the caffeine... So it should be limited not eliminated. My doctor never said anything about it though.

The no sushi while pregnant info is outdated and just wrong.  Sushi is flash frozen to kill bacteria.  Unless you're getting it from a place you should never eat at, pregnant or not, you're fine.

  • I avoid caffeine, alcohol and I eat fish according to the pregnancy fish charts. Other than that - I don't discriminate on my cheeses and I'm not afraid of deli meat.

Oh - my other super weird thing is I won't drink tea of any kind. I read "herbal" teas are bad and I guess I don't know which herbs are ok and what aren't, so I'm scared of touching it. But, I know I'm just being a freak.
  • ....heroine is bad during pregnancy?! Awkward !!

Totally kidding. I live in a small town, only 2 places for sushi so one place I will eat sushi at. And no raw, just because I don't like it. I had a rock star energy drink the other day, didn't even 2nd think it. I won't do it again just cause I do know how bad they are.
Still gonna eat my eggs! And 2 coffees a day :)
  • I eat all the foods, and drink the occasional glass of wine. I had a CSA egg share so the early stages of this baby were all about unpasturized eggs...wait, do they pasturize eggs?  If we happen to come across fresh apple cider, I will drink the shit out of it.

  • In having sushi right now. Well I'm waiting on it right now lol. However it is the baked salmon cause that's what I like! I also eat fried eggs with a runny yolk! They are so freaking good!!!!

Thank you. It seriously drives me batty that people are so scared of a food that is one of the healthiest things in the world.

My OB (not my usual one, but her partner) kept giving me all these scare stories about sushi. So I asked her, "What do you say about the fact that in Japan women eat it all through their pregnancies and have no problem."

She stared at me blankly for a second and said, "Well, yes, that's true." But she still claims it's not safe. Translation: She thinks it's gross, therefore she puts it on the banned list. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

  • I want sushi. Badly. But the concept of eating it disgusts me. I can't wait to enjoy eating again.

  • Undercooked meat? Haha I gave up caffeine for the first trimester, but I'm a teacher so I'm not sure how much longer I can tolerate the exhaustion! And I'm on board with an ounce of wine in the 3rd trimester now and then! I'm also avoiding soft cheese and most deli meats. If it's fresh off the bone I'm game. Before pregnancy I was a borderline vegetarian... Now I'm a full blown carnivore!
  • I don't have artificial sweeteners, caffeine (I don't normally anyway) and alcohol. I've also cut processed food in general, and am trying to limit my flour/sugar intake. But, that's just for general health, not really all pregnancy related. I'm really grossed out by red meat right now, so I haven't been eating it.

I eat either salmon sushi every 3 days or Bagel & Lox. It's what I crave. I'm also chugging fresh squeezed OJ (unpasturized), eating soft cheeses (brie is heaven), and I will probably eat Jimmy Johns a lot.

  • Mainly just coffee & booze. I eat my steak medium rare at home and soft cooked eggs all the time. I haven't been for sushi since getting prego but would definitely eat made fresh at a reputable place.

    Mmmmm sushi...
  • No alcohol and uncooked meat or fish... it's been rough but I guess I can do it for a year. I also cut down a lot on shellfish and no more than one coffee a day. And only fully heated deli meat.
I avoid aspartame like The Plague at all times. When I am pregnant it will take me off the market for even longer. Ugh.

  • Really only alcohol, and that's because DH feels strongly about it. I would be ok with a glass or two of wine a week after 1st tri.

I had raw oysters last week, and they were so yum. Plan on having sushi later this week.

I drink a cup of coffee most days. That being said, last preg I was told to avoid coffee after 20 weeks because I became severely dehydrated, and it wasn't helping. I was "allowed" to drink it again after 36 weeks. I plan on drinking more water this time to avoid that restriction.
