GTKY: Where is home for you?

Re: GTKY: Where is home for you?

  • Born and raised in Nebraska, currently in Nebraska, hoping to move to Florida where DH is from next August. I love the slow pace and the hospitality in Nebraska, but I'm a flip-flop girl and want to live somewhere where I can wear them nearly year round. I'm over snow. I've also lived in Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
What part of Florida are you hoping to move too? I'm originally from North Florida and I miss it! Doesn't seen like it would be that different, but culturally north and central FL are waaaay different.
My H is from Frostproof, FL. However, we are thinking about the Cape Coral area or Braedenton/Sarasota area.

I lived in Sarasota for awhile and loved it! High cost of living (for Florida) but you can't beat those beaches!

  • Most of the way up the coast of Maine.  Though we've only lived there 8 years and no matter how long we stay, to real Mainers, I'll always be from 'away' ... originally from southeastern MA.  Have lived near Philly and DC too.

Pros:  It's so pretty!   Love the variety of landscapes.  And I love being near the ocean again.  There's still a lot of trees and open space and undeveloped areas.  Also traffic is not bad - even the summer traffic people complain about is nothing compared to so many other places.  Great farmers' market in town and even the regular supermarket does a good job with organic foods and, in season, locally grown foods.  Unpasteurized dairy products (like delicious raw milk) are legal which is no help right now but really nice when non-pregnant.  More good restaurants than you might expect - again, with focus on good, natural and often local ingredients put together well.  No Ethiopian or Vietnamese restaurants, though, and no really good Thai ones. :(

Cons: Trader Joes is 3+ hours away.  Work is far too - little over an hour.  Teacher pay is not good (though at least class sizes are pretty small which is very important to me).  Very little ethnic diversity (farther south in the state there is much more).  Our house has an oil furnace and crappy insulation. must fix that.  I love winter but by mid-late March it's getting a bit old and that is not really spring yet

Same for teacher pay in Florida. Add to that the horrendous way Florida handles education. Plenty of ethnic diversity at my school! Title I with 92% minority, tons of Spanish speakers. Really makes me wish I had taken more Spanish in college.

I'm in Seattle now and consider it home, but grew up mostly on the other side of the state.  We spent seven years in SF and the greater Bay Area immediately after getting married.  It was fun, and I miss my friends, but I am SO HAPPY to be back in Seattle.  I am totally a Northwest girl at heart.

  • Houston here.

Pros: Warm winters if you like that sort of thing (I don't). It rarely freezes, only snows once every few years. Good diversity, lots of interesting museums and galleries, and the food is hard to beat. Close to the gulf so beach trips are easy.

Cons: It's like living in a sauna from May to September. Killer humidity, unrelenting heat. It takes a car and 20-60min to get anywhere useful even outside of rush hour. No real walking neighborhoods. No real winter (I love winter). Hurricanes/Tropical Storms every so often.

We would much rather move somewhere in the pacific northwest or the Rockies but all of our family is here and we want to raise our kid with the close family ties that we had growing up. So we suffer through the heat and vacation to places that get real snow in the winter.

  • I live in a little town in Oklahoma called dibble. I love it because it's the country but I hate that everything is so far away the nearest hospital is 45 minutes away.

  • Columbus, OH - born and raised. I like being able to enjoy all four seasons (even if winter does seem to drag on too long sometimes!)  It's nice to live in a college town with a lot of unique neighborhoods, plus it's not a far drive to get to some nice state parks.

  • Born and raised in North Jersey - DH and I are living in the town right next to where I grew up and about 15 minutes from where he grew up.

We are located about 20 minutes from the George Washington Bridge which takes you into NYC. That's what great about it here is that even though our town is very suburban we can hop on a bus on the corner of our street and be in the city in no time. Also depending on which direction you go in, you can be at a beach or in the mountains in less than an hour. Only thing I could do without is the cold weather - it's been so cold this week! I definitely would take our hot and humid summers over our freezing and snowy winters any day!

  • As a military brat this has always been one of the toughest questions to answer. We moved around every 3 years till I was 12. Starting in England and ended up in the NW. The longest I have lived in one state is now Oregon. Before that it was Florida. Oh how I miss Florida!

I lived in Sarasota for awhile and loved it! High cost of living (for Florida) but you can't beat those beaches!

I lived in Bradenton for 3 years when I was younger and it was awesome! If I could move back I definitely would.

@sammy.k Hey now, that should be a happy face for moving to the beautiful city of Minneapolis! :) You'll love it here, it really is a great area. At least in the summer..!

That's a long definition of "just"! Like saying "I live just outside of Austin in San Antonio." It's ok that you're an Okie, you don't have to hide it :) .

Haha no hiding it but...if I say Durant people don't know where that is. Here we use Dallas as kind of a marker to explain. Lol I do love Texas though and really would not hate it if DF decided to transfer there.

  • Born and raised in MA about 45 mins south of Boston. We currently live in Sioux Falls, SD. We have been here for a year and a half now and I do like the city. It is big enough to have all the conveniences but feels more like a large town then a big city. But winters suck, I hate being cold, and I work outside a lot so I do not really enjoy the days that get well into the negatives. I miss MA, both our families and a lot of friends are out there and it is hard to be away from them. Although I am not sure I want to live in MA, I do want to live closer. I really love New England, and I miss the beaches. We would also consider FL as well but I am not sure how I would handle summers out there. I spent some time living in southern OR too, I loved the temperatures there just not all the rain.

  • I'm in NE Ohio. I've lived in South Jersey and North Carolina but Ohio is my favorite.

I live in central/western Ohio! We still have a bit of snow on the ground. Heard its supposed to storm this weekend. Rain and wind.
