GTKY: Where is home for you?

Hi ladies! Not sure if this thread has been started before, I couldn't find it via scanning or searching, but I love getting to know everyone on the boards and was just curious as to where you call home. I live in Orlando, Fl. On the plus side Today we had our first cold day (read: 65 degrees) and I was excited for that. Long sleeve tee time, woooo! On the minus side, Unfortunately, I live about five minutes from Disney and one minute from a major outlet mall, so traffic is getting terrible this time of year. Plus or minuses on your current city?

I live in a large city just south of Boston and work in Boston.

i grew up in CT so when i say "home" i still think of there, but i've lived here in Boston and the area for 14 years and i love it.

Pluses of Boston? it's beautiful, awesome history, great bars and restaurants, lots to do.

cons: the traffic and parking are absolutely awful.

we had our first really cold day yesterday. when i was leaving my house it was 22 degrees. :(

  • Born and raised in Nebraska, currently in Nebraska, hoping to move to Florida where DH is from next August.

I love the slow pace and the hospitality in Nebraska, but I'm a flip-flop girl and want to live somewhere where I can wear them nearly year round. I'm over snow.

I've also lived in Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

  • I'm from Brooklyn, NY. Lived here my whole life and can't wait to move out of the city!
  • I live in Omaha, NE. Not the most exciting place to live, but it's a great size and consistently rated one of the best cities to live/get a job/raise a family/drink. So I can't complain. I've lived here most my life.

  • ATL - I live about 30 miles northeast of the city actually, so I get the perks of being close enough to the city to enjoy it but far enough that we have space :) I have lived here my entire life and can't imagine living anywhere else. Traffic BLOWS though.

  • I'm originally from about 45 miles north of Omaha, NE.  I moved to southern MN after H and I got married.  I got to say, I miss Nebraska.  Being the 4 hours north really makes a difference in snowfall and cold.  Plus the town I'm closest to is more like a retirement community, so not a lot going on around here.

Northern California. It is heaven. House prices suck, but property taxes are low at least. Weather, hills, proximity to mountains, and weather are awesome. Oh and the weather. Did I mention that? After being away for 10 years I am so glad to be back home.

Northern California is one of the most beautiful places i've ever visited, i loved it.

  • Texas!  About 35-45 min north of Dallas.  I have always lived in Texas, so I have nothing to compare!  I like that we don't get the crazy winters you guys up north get.  But it gets so freaking hot in the summers!

What part of Florida are you hoping to move too? I'm originally from North Florida and I miss it! Doesn't seen like it would be that different, but culturally north and central FL are waaaay different.

  • From the Bay Area (East Bay :x) and I will kind of always think of that as "home." Now I'm in a small town in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 30 miles east of Sacramento. It's OK I guess. Very cheap, fresh air, tons of trees, beautiful, and it doesn't have any cookie-cutter developments: almost all the houses are custom built so pretty much every neighborhood is nice. (Although honestly I wouldn't mind living in a cookie-cutter development now...I mean, they have SIDEWALKS and PARKS!) The downside is I need to drive to another city if I want to do anything more involved than grocery shopping.

I used to live in downtown Sacramento and I think that's like the perfect blend of what I want: city living, walkability, stuff to do, but reliable public transit, cheap housing, and no freaking school lotteries (I'm looking at you, San Francisco!). Unfortunately my husband wasn't into the idea of city living. When it's time to sell our house I'm really going to push to get back downtown or at least into one of the adjacent neighborhoods...I feel like we've given the far suburbs a chance and I see it as a failed experiment. I just do not feel at home out there.

My H is from Frostproof, FL. However, we are thinking about the Cape Coral area or Braedenton/Sarasota area.

I live about and hour and a half from Toronto in a much smaller city. I can't really talk it up as I'm not in love with this place.

I moved here for my H but really miss my hometown of Kingston Ontario. Beautiful historical city on waterfront with fantastic community and shopping :)
  • North suburb of Chicago! I grew up in a small town in NW IL, but I love being close to the city.
  • Born and raised in North Dakota and still living here, it was a balmy 28 when I drove to work this morning :-) I absolutely love it here, its a wonderful place to grow up, crime rate is very low, cost of living is low, our economy is number 1 in the nation and our unemployment rate is the lowest in the USA. Not too shabby!
  • Most of the way up the coast of Maine.  Though we've only lived there 8 years and no matter how long we stay, to real Mainers, I'll always be from 'away' ... originally from southeastern MA.  Have lived near Philly and DC too.

Pros:  It's so pretty!   Love the variety of landscapes.  And I love being near the ocean again.  There's still a lot of trees and open space and undeveloped areas.  Also traffic is not bad - even the summer traffic people complain about is nothing compared to so many other places.  Great farmers' market in town and even the regular supermarket does a good job with organic foods and, in season, locally grown foods.  Unpasteurized dairy products (like delicious raw milk) are legal which is no help right now but really nice when non-pregnant.  More good restaurants than you might expect - again, with focus on good, natural and often local ingredients put together well.  No Ethiopian or Vietnamese restaurants, though, and no really good Thai ones. :(

Cons: Trader Joes is 3+ hours away.  Work is far too - little over an hour.  Teacher pay is not good (though at least class sizes are pretty small which is very important to me).  Very little ethnic diversity (farther south in the state there is much more).  Our house has an oil furnace and crappy insulation. must fix that.  I love winter but by mid-late March it's getting a bit old and that is not really spring yet

Nor cal here too! I am 1hr north of San Fran. I'm originally from Orange County and don't miss it. All my family is still there so that part sucks.
We are relocating to Boise ID next year with DHs fam. I loooove it there! NorCal is certainly beautiful but so freakin expensive.

  • Live in Houston, originally from Dallas. I like living in a large city, though we are looking to buy closer into downtown. Other than the oppressive heat and humidity in the summer, I like it down here. Laid back, lots of good job opportunities, friendly people, decently liberal in the city itself. I hate hate hate all the masterplanned communities that surround Houston, though. Not my style. And it's not the most aesthetically pleasing of areas, though I'm pretty sure I will always hate anywhere we live after getting spoiled by Hawaii.

  • I live about an hour from Toronto, Ontario. We really love it here, it's fairly large, older city under going a bit of a resurgence right now. House prices are great, and we live in a pretty "up and coming" area, so there are lots of new shops, restaurants and interesting people popping up in our neighbourhood. We've lived in the city for about 5 years, but recently moved to this new part of the city. It's a great place to raise kids!

  • I'm in Southwestern Ontario, a couple of hours from Toronto. I'm not a fan of my city, honestly, but both DH and I grew up here so our family and friends are all here. It works. Plus, we're close enough to the border for regular shopping trips and cheap flights out of Detroit.

  • Southwest Wisconsin
  • El Paso for me.

Pluses: It's funny watching tourism shows about EP because they point out historic and "popular" places like the magoffin home (historic, but also in the middle of three shelters so not the safest place) and chicos tacos (just don't eat there. Don't.)

EP has a lot of actual cool places like lephant rock to hike up to, the river to walk next to, and a waterfall.
