Will my job effect my pregnancy ?

edited November 2013 in July 2014 Moms
I'm a trainee hairdresser and i have just found out that I am six weeks pregnant :) I am over the moon but suddenly I am starting to worry about products such as perming oil (which has a very potent smell) , the obvious hairdye and bleach could effect my pregnancy.
I am also on my feet for a minimum of eight hours a day which causes me back ache and brings on cramps does anyone have any tips on how to handle this :) thanks x

  • I would talk to your doctor about it. Perhaps there is a professional association with official information for pregnant hairdressers?

  • I was a hairdresser for a long time, and although never pregnant while working those back breaking long days, many of my friends were. They all wore gloves religiously and tried to stay away from perms, relaxers, keratin, etc...but they all worked, some until the day their water broke! I think you have to listen to what your body is telling you, which is really hard when you are new and trying to prove yourself, trust me, I totally get it! Good luck!

  • I am a hairstylist and have been for years. I was pregnant w DD during beauty school 12 years ago and am now. Long days definitely kill my back but I have yet to cramp if I did I would cut my hours or schedule more breaks. I recently switched all my styling products to either Morrocan Oil or Surface as they are Paraben and sulfate free. Parabens are the cancer causers. I also told the owner of my shop she cannot do keratin treatments while I am there. Fortunately, I am a booth renter so I can do these things. I have endo which was not hereditary in my family and I am sure it came from my years of chemical exposure. Many hairstylists have it as you can read this on the Mayo Clinic website. Things you may want to consider just starting out. Those chemicals do affect you.
