I drank occasional sips of wine and ate sushi in my 2nd and 3rd tri. I was not worried at all. And I don't buy the story of "two glasses of wine and FAS". That would be the extremely rare, .00000001% of all cases of FAS if it were actually true.
It's entirely your decision to make. There's been a ton of research. It's your baby; you have to choose which studies and claims to believe. I'm pretty liberal about foods and even some medications during pregnancy, but alcohol is the one item firmly on my no-no list, no questions asked.
The concern for an moderate drinker isn't so much FAS but more FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder) where the effects are seen more at a school age level. (Learning difficulties, oppositional defiance etc) I'm sure one or two during pregnancy is fine but I would be reluctant to indulge more than weekly. Everyone can have the "proof" of one way or another. We all know the story of the alcoholic crack addict that had a healthy baby and the health nut who had a baby with severe disabilities
Talk to your doctor and know that sometimes the fates determine what will happen regardless of what we do.
I personally avoid alcohol. But due to working with children disabilities and knowing all the "stats" makes me a little paranoid. But to each their own. We all do our best for ourselves, our babies. Make your choices based on what feels right to you
I didn't have any alcohol at all until the last month of my pregnancy. I was so miserable and large I probably had one glass of wine a week.
That being said...you shouldn't drink when pregnant. General rule.
Not according to my doctor. He has no issues with a moderate amount of beer/wine during the 2nd/3rd trimester.
I find it hilarious that people cling to the "no alcohol rule" when some of the things they choose to put in their bodies are FAR worse (i.e. tons of fast food, soda, artificial sweeteners, processed food, etc.)
This. I will be indulging in a small glass of wine or taster of beer throughout this pregnancy. I won't touch artificial sweeteners, though.
I will add that 35 years ago (and yes, lots has changed since then), my mother was told she needed more iron while pregnant with my older sister. She was given a choice. An iron pill, or a bottle of Guinness a day. Guess which one she chose? Aside from her inherent blondness peaking through now and then, my sister is a happy, healthy woman with two happy, healthy, I had a glass of wine now and then while pregnant babies of her own.
For me alcohol is out, a friend of mine had two small glasses of wine during her pregnancy (weeks apart from each other, not on be night) and her daughter was born with fetal alcohol syndrome. The doctors don't know when it occurred, they said that sometimes when you drink the baby can get FAS. It is not something I am willing to risk.
Your friend is a lying liar who lies.
I think your response and attitude are quite immature.
It's entirely plausible that her friends' child was diagnosed with FASD after she consumed moderate/small amounts of alcohol. As a social worker who has worked with FASD diagnosed individuals, parents of those individuals, FASD awareness organizations and a slew of medical professionals ....There is no known firm statistic on when and how much alcohol it is safe to consume urging pregnancy.
We all know women who have consumed alcohol during pregnancy and state that no harm was caused to their child. And mothers who did only consume one or two glasses and their infants became affected with FASD.
It's a role of the dice... It's your body and your choice. Sometimes the odds seem small and minute, but it's your gamble.
But I want to really affirm something to the contributors of this question. FASD is a neurological disorder, but also a spectrum disorder. Many people only find out that their child has FASD because they display the worst symptoms on that spectrum. So please take that into account.
I understand that this is a loaded question and I commend the individual who asked this question for trying to inform themselves. That is a very brave thing to do. Continue to research and ask questions and at the end of the day do what is right for you.
You can't wait until later in pregnancy? If you are feeling this way in the 1st tri, it's going to be a looong pregnancy for you!
I never drank wine during mine, but if I did, I would have waited until the 3rd tri.
Judge much? I had no trouble with not drinking the first time I was pregnant. Because I could sleep and do what I wanted when I wasn't at work. Now I have a screaming banshee 2 year old and I mourn the loss of my weekend wine daily. I had some Friday and it was so good I wanted to cry. Your baby is 2 months old. You still like her all the time because she's little and squishy and cute. I adore my kid but I want to sell him at least once a week and he absolutely drives me to drink.
No, I am not judging anyone. My response was not geared towards your situation with your child that you want to "sell at least once a week". Yes my baby is 3 months old, and shame on me for liking her all of the time. When I do drink wine or beer or whatever I choose, I don't do it to escape my baby or negative feelings....so that makes no sense.
All I was saying was that if she is newly pregnant (I am assuming first time), and already feels the need to have alcohol then it will be a long 9 months ahead of her. I didn't say she was a bad person or that she absolutely shouldn't. I answered as many posters did...and said I, personally, would wait.

Wait, is pregnancy ever NOT a really long 9 months?

You may not have intended it, but your initial post and this one come across as extremely sanctimonious and judgey.
Alcohol is out for me too....it is only 9 months and i think i can survive without it....does it suck of course but i will do anything to have a healthy baby and pregnancy. But everyone is entitled to their own decisions.

@jazznit1984What you aren't taking into account is that there is no way to test how much alcohol a pregnant woman would have consumed after the fact. So, sure she could say she only had 2 glasses of wine because who would want to admit they consumed enough alcohol to cause damage to their baby? As a social worker, you have to be aware that people are liars. You can't be that niave, really?
Edited for weird ass quoting.
Do people lie, yes? That wasnt the purpose of my post. No need to call me naive deary.
You can cause damage to your unborn child with one, two, ten or twenty drinks. That was the point, there is no known "safe"amount. There are many children with FASD that are born to parents that are not binge drinkers or alcoholics. Many women who just had a drink or two and felt that because they were moderate that it wouldn't affect the fetus and it can.

Lol. This cracked me up. Mostly because I've been craving a good glass of red wine for weeks now and I'm not much of a drinker ever, and definitely never wine when I do drink. It IS going to be a long nine months!
I'm not a big drinker... But tomorow is my birthday and I plan on having a very small glass of wine at diner with the family. I'm on the border of my first ans seccond trimester (I'll offically be in the second on saterday) and i probably won't have a drop of alcohol after that until the baby is born, possibly until after I'm done nursing(but I may... Thats what pumping and freezing is for right?)

I imagine there are many different ideas on who what when why etc,,, but the whole "she had a drink 2x weeks apart & developed fas" is new and horrifying to me. not strickty because I have drank but because I always thought bodies were so much more complex. I've never heard that one person can handle alcohol while pregnant and another cannot but I'm open to it. some people are alcoholics, some aren't,,, that's scary stuff & I have had alcohol here and there, actually 2 half glasses of sparkling wine, and I will stop for a while but in my prior pregnancies, I drank a glass occasionally in the end.
"FASDs are caused by a woman drinking alcohol during pregnancy. There is no known amount of alcohol that is safe to drink while pregnant. There is also no safe time to drink during pregnancy and no safe kind of alcohol to drink while pregnant. To prevent FASD, a woman should not drink alcohol while she is pregnant, or when becoming pregnant is possible."
Bliss+Berry you see @jazznit1984 is not pulling information from her ass she does have a fucking clue!
@ktlucas Go white knight somewhere else and while you're at it, fuck off.
So its wrong for someone to stand up for someone else yet its okay for you to do so yourself? bit hypocritical are we? btw you are such a well spoken & educated lady.

ETA: I can see you've worked your panties into a bunch over the display shower post. Get over it and quit following me around to bash my posts. Or don't. I can keep up and I assure you it won't be pleasant for you.
please make my online life unpleasant for me. i clearly see you have nothing better to do in your real life. and what got me workup is the fact that you have fuck this & fuck that to get your educated point across. very well mannered!
I would love to have a glass of wine. But I WILL NOT. Here's my reasoning:
If a mother was caught feeding a baby even "sips" of wine, let along a 4 oz bottle, she would be opening ridiculed and I would honestly consider calling the police/child protection.
An unborn baby is so much smaller and in such need for the utmost care and protection. How could anyone want to drink something that could do potential damage to their little one?

We obviously grew u with different backgrounds, not saying my family was or is right but as a second Generation in America my Italian family never thought twice about giving me a sip of wine at a year old. I know that's not a new born but still. I don't think I should have been taken away for that... Thats my honest opinion.
Ok I'm done beating the dead horse now
