I didn't have any alcohol at all until the last month of my pregnancy. I was so miserable and large I probably had one glass of wine a week.
That being said...you shouldn't drink when pregnant. General rule.

I'm sure one or two during pregnancy is fine but I would be reluctant to indulge more than weekly.
Everyone can have the "proof" of one way or another. We all know the story of the alcoholic crack addict that had a healthy baby and the health nut who had a baby with severe disabilities
Talk to your doctor and know that sometimes the fates determine what will happen regardless of what we do.
I personally avoid alcohol. But due to working with children disabilities and knowing all the "stats" makes me a little paranoid. But to each their own. We all do our best for ourselves, our babies. Make your choices based on what feels right to you
This. I will be indulging in a small glass of wine or taster of beer throughout this pregnancy. I won't touch artificial sweeteners, though.

It's entirely plausible that her friends' child was diagnosed with FASD after she consumed moderate/small amounts of alcohol. As a social worker who has worked with FASD diagnosed individuals, parents of those individuals, FASD awareness organizations and a slew of medical professionals ....There is no known firm statistic on when and how much alcohol it is safe to consume urging pregnancy.
We all know women who have consumed alcohol during pregnancy and state that no harm was caused to their child. And mothers who did only consume one or two glasses and their infants became affected with FASD.
It's a role of the dice... It's your body and your choice. Sometimes the odds seem small and minute, but it's your gamble.
But I want to really affirm something to the contributors of this question. FASD is a neurological disorder, but also a spectrum disorder. Many people only find out that their child has FASD because they display the worst symptoms on that spectrum. So
please take that into account.
I understand that this is a loaded question and I commend the individual who asked this question for trying to inform themselves. That is a very brave thing to do. Continue to research and ask questions and at the end of the day do what is right for you.
All I was saying was that if she is newly pregnant (I am assuming first time), and already feels the need to have alcohol then it will be a long 9 months ahead of her. I didn't say she was a bad person or that she absolutely shouldn't. I answered as many posters did...and said I, personally, would wait.
Wait, is pregnancy ever NOT a really long 9 months?
So be it then.
Lol

Do people lie, yes? That wasnt the purpose of my post. No need to call me naive deary.
You can cause damage to your unborn child with one, two, ten or twenty drinks. That was the point, there is no known "safe"amount. There are many children with FASD that are born to parents that are not binge drinkers or alcoholics. Many women who just had a drink or two and felt that because they were moderate that it wouldn't affect the fetus and it can.
Lol. This cracked me up. Mostly because I've been craving a good glass of red wine for weeks now and I'm not much of a drinker ever, and definitely never wine when I do drink. It IS going to be a long nine months!
JFC.
We obviously grew u with different backgrounds, not saying my family was or is right but as a second Generation in America my Italian family never thought twice about giving me a sip of wine at a year old. I know that's not a new born but still. I don't think I should have been taken away for that... Thats my honest opinion.
Ok I'm done beating the dead horse now
