Maternity pants before 3 months? Updated: OMFG the pants were worth it

Luna CLuna C member
edited November 2013 in 1st Trimester
I was already overweight when I got pregnant (currently 9w) and while I've only gained two pounds, my jeans and pants are basically unwearable. All the weight gain has been in the tummy and I look like I'm about 4 months along at this point.

I tried the belly bands and those just weren't cutting it for me -- I found them uncomfortable and was tugging on them a lot. Am I crazy to just get maternity pants at this point? Will they be falling off me?

I can only rock the unbuttoned-jeans and loose-fitting top combo so many times.

Any advice appreciated.

UPDATE
I found one store locally that had a decent selection (I thought it was all higher-end stuff, but they have more moderately priced things in the back) OH MY GOD it was so worth it.

I only got a pair of jeans and some leggings for now since I wear dresses to work and they're pretty forgiving. I just needed stuff for running errands and casual nights out. Also picked up a few bras. Apparently I went from a 38D to a 40F in just the past few weeks. Awesome. I'm going to need a pulley system to cart my boobs around by the time the baby arrives.

  • That's what I'm asking: Will they be more comfortable or is it too soon? (This is my first, I'd have to go shopping -- most likely online so I can't even try them on first.)

  • I haven't given in yet...but i'm also sitting in my office with my pants unbuttoned right now.  after lunch is the worst for me!

i'm going to wearing maternity pants before long.

  • i haven't given into the maternity pants quite yet....i am sure i will soon but i really like my express skinny jeans and i am not ready to give them up yet!!!
  • I have a pretty flat stomach usually but im only 8 weeks and yesterday when I told my coworker  she said "yea.. I kind of was wondering because of your belly"..lol I have been saying its bloat and constapation considering I havent gone to the bathroom in like 5 days... but im starting to think I may need some new pants really quickly.

  • I broke mine out at 5 weeks to deal with bloat.  I'm 12+ weeks with twins right now, and I haven't changed much in size since about 7 weeks, but still look way pregnant.  Comfort has been amazing!

  • Comfy wins.  Buy the pants.  Belly bands weren't right for me, either.

  • Nah. I just got my first maternity clothing piece. A belly band. I just hate wearing jeans so it makes it a lot more comfortable. Since I will be pregnant for mostly winter I may just stick with that and buy some shirts.

    It's a BOY

  • I'm so glad you asked this! I'm also overweight and pregnant with my first and my pants are suffocating me. I've lost a bit of weight from being sick, but my belly is getting tight in my jeans. I will definitely be ordering some maternity ones soon. :)

  • Week 10 here and currently wearing my brand spankin new maternity work pants.  I love them so much, I might where them to bed.  I'm sure DH would be thrilled.  There is absolutely no reason to suffer through being uncomfortable.

  • I'm also overweight but have lost so far in this pregnancy. I've worn mine a few times and was so comfortable. I just need to order more and I'll wear them all the time.

  •  I think you should get something comfortable if you want! Some maternity clothes are quite nice looking.

I'm 8w3d and not buying yet, as I had a loss last time and I just can't for a few weeks...but I also cannot button my jeans and dh thinks I look different. Thankfully my work uniforms are larger (for winter layering, I get the pants big) so I can get through there for the whole first tri.
  • I love my maternity pants! I'm almost 13 weeks and have been wearing them for a couple weeks now.
  • Good for you! I am also dealing with some serious bloating and will most likely be ordering some new maternity gear. Fun fun :)
  • I'm only 7.5 weeks and rocking my maternity pants.  I'm all for comfort/getting the most bang for my buck.  Why not buy them now and get more use out of them?
On our way to baby#2!  Praying for a healthy and happy delivery next June!
  • I'm 9w5d and wore my first pair of maternity jeans today. LIFE IS SO MUCH BETTER. Like, I feel 900% more comfortable with myself and in my shirts and everything.

  • I feel and look about 4 months pregnant :( so I brought out my belly band and some maternity work pants. I  need to buy some jeans since last time I was pregnant during spring and summer.

  • I have been VERY comfortable in Motherhood Maternity full panel pants since I was just starting to actually show (not bloat)! Before that, especially with bloating, I hated belly bands. They were terrible. If you aren't comfy in regular pants anymore, I'd say you should definitely get maternity pants. I'll just say that I got the full panel jeggings because I tried them on and holy crap.. I loved them. So I bought them and now, at 24 weeks, they still fit because the panel has so much room that it grows with you. And it's snug enough that they never needed constant pulling on!

  • I am only 4 weeks, but I know that I will be busting out my maternity pants before 3 months if needed. Once I cant button my pants I will use the hair tie trick. I bloat like crazy whether I am pregnant or not, unfortunately!

  • For the life of me, I can't figure out why women delay this decision until the last possible moment and they're completely anguished in their normal clothing.

  • Do whatever you have to do to be comfy!  I gained 15 pounds this year due to fertility treatments, and another 5 pounds during my IVF cycle, so I was already 20 pounds over my normal weight by the time I got pregnant - I started wearing a bellaband at 6 weeks, because it's just not worth it to be uncomfortable with all the bloating.  My RE said that my ovaries are still the size of tangerines from IVF, and it'll take a few more weeks for them to shrink back down to normal size.  So, by the time my ovaries shrink back to normal, I'll be at the end of my first trimester and getting bigger anyways!

I'm now 7wk6d, and went out last weekend and bought a bunch of maternity clothes.  I'm going to start wearing them a few times a week for the next few weeks, so that they'll blend in better with the rest of my work wardrobe, and it hopefully won't be as obvious that I switched to maternity clothes!

  • I'm waiting for mine to come in the mail today! I bought them a little over 5 weeks and they're taking freaking forever. I just wanna be comfy lol!

  • I'm 9 weeks today and I've been wearing maternity pants for a week and its so much better! I too was overweight to start and after 4 surgeries and IVF drugs they said I could show anytime. I had no normal pants that fit just my work scrubs. Even some of those are getting pushed to the back of my closet.  I was trying not to invest to much before 12 weeks but oh well.image
  • I'm so glad to hear y'all say this! I have been wearing the same 2 pairs of tights for a week because that's all that's comfortable. I am 7 weeks and honestly could care LESS what people think. Get me into those prego pants!!

Comfy always wins :). Btw...welcome to the big boob club. I had the same thing and when my milk came in I was an 36i. Went from a freakin dd to an I. I strongly suggest bravada nursing bras :)

  • I'm 9 weeks and just bought some maternity pants. Best decision ever! It is worth feeling comfortable even though I am not showing that much yet. I always have a hard time with pants but Old navy had some good dress pants and jeans! Their maternity pants fit me well even though their normal women's jeans never really worked for me before I was pregnant.
  • I am 8 weeks today.  My bra size has gone from 38D to 40D (and they are getting tight) and I bought maternity pants at 6 weeks.  They are so comfy!  I have pair for work and one pair of jeans.  I love my elastic waist band (esp helpful at work after I eat lunch).  Everyone's body is different, wear what's comfortable, you are the one that has to wear it all day.

  • this question might sound silly but since I'm only 6 weeks along, can I wear shapwear at this stage to hide the bloat bulge, it isn't a big bulge but under fitted dresses it looks bleh. I've read somewhere that you shouldn't wear anything too snug while pregnant, is that true?

  • I'm pregnant with my third (in 3 years) so still had about 15 pounds to go that needed to be lost before getting pregnant again... but oh well. I started wearing maternity pants around 10 weeks this time, and I don't care! The first 2 I felt like there was a timeline I should follow, not anymore! Now that I know how comfortable they are, that is what comes first. :)

To the wearing fitted items - my doc suggested panty hose to reduce varicose veins.  So based on that I'm guessing shapewear early in the pregnancy wouldn't be too bad.

  • I ordered a bunch of Motherhood Maternity/Old Navy early so I could get good deals! I put down a huge chunk of change last pregnancy because I waited until I absolutely needed clothes and NOTHING was on sale. Of course, I didn't keep anything not expecting to be pregnant this soon!

  • So I just got my BFP and already broke them out.  Hey - they were expensive GAP maternity pants and they are only a year old! lol.  I could care less. Plus, who can even tell you are wearing them?  My jeans were already tight from not quite getting back down to pre-baby weight with DS, I was praying for a BFP just so I had an excuse to wear them!
