what can you get for 200k?

Re: what can you get for 200k?

  • Well the average household income where I live is $40k and you probably saw the size of my house on a 3 acre lot.  You make more and have higher home prices, I make less and have lower home prices.  Does it all end up equaling out?  I dont know.

  • I didn't realize how LCOL my area was till now - anything over 150K to maybe 175K is like extravagant with unnecessary awesome stuff. You maybe could even get a small-ish waterfront property for 200K.
Although about 35 minutes away is the city and all the pretty houses there are over 200K and tons of sq footage, like 3 times the size of my house or more.

  • Our house was about that. It's 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths with a finished basement and garage. We moved kind of "out" though. The older and nicer areas of town, you could get 2-3 bedrooms, 2 baths, but a much older house that hasn't been updated really. The old houses that super nice are like $300-400,000.

We rent because it's very hard to buy in this area and we dont have a large enough downpayment saved yet....Right now we're in a small 2 bedroom in a crappy downtown neighborhood and rent is $1200 per month (which sadly is considered a good price).... but sometimes I day dream and browse real estate sites...

We'd like a single family home with 3 bedrooms and 1.5+ baths ideally if we were to buy (or hell, even a townhome would be acceptable as long as it has what we need).... you wont find one in the moderate (not even the best) neighborhood we'd be content living in for under ~370K right now.  Most are more than that, that's the minimum I've been seeing.

Townhomes, maybe ~300K or a little over

If there even ARE any that is, since inventory is kind of low.

So yeah.  Renting for awhile it is while I slowly accumulate a gigantic downpayment.

    I hate this place.

we pay $2,000 per month renting a 2 bedroom condo.  Yay, California!

Ugh I'm sorry! :( I want to go back to Tucson AZ where I grew up and I could get a bigger place for half of what I pay.  Sigh.

Do you at least have decent squre footage??? $2000 for a 2 bedroom holy crap...Is it at least a nicer neighborhood?

The place across from us is 5k rent a month. It is a house, about 2000sqft, but still seems high! They just sold it for 1 million. Damn LA!

We live on the westside.  It is good price for the area we live in.  Not crazy sqft.  I would say maybe 1,200.  But, we are close to a really great school, we live close to DS and work is 5 minutes away.
Well that's good at least that you're by a good school and you dont have to commute... still sucks that we have to pay so much just to live in decent living conditions.

I NEED to move to a better area and into a bigger place sooner rather than later...at least before my DS is going to start public school, because our neighborhood is not great and the schools don't rank very well.  And once we have a 2nd, we are definitely going to need more space....our apartment is only like... ~800 sq feet.  Feels tight enough with just the 3 of us. Sucks.  BUT at least we have washer/dryer hookups! That's nice at least...

$200k in our area can get you a nice, new 4000+ sq ft home on a decent sized lot. We live in a very LCOL area.
Same here and could even be a custom build with all the upgrades with money left over most likely.
What is the average household income where you live? See, this makes me totally jealous. A house like that here would be $1m to build. So sometimes I have these fantasies of moving to Georgia or Mississippi and buying a mansion. But then I remind myself that the salaries probably suck. ETA: in the 2011 census the median household income in my city was about $85,000.
2011 median household income is $42k and average home value is $102k.  Middle of the state: North Platte, Nebraska and if you work for the railroad which is one of the main employers you make between 75-100k which is considered ALOT in our LCOL area.

Yeah, but you have to deal with all the die hard conservatives.  I do like the area though.  I've lived in OK almost my whole life.  It's not teepees and covered wagons like people think.

In Colorado. In our town though, you pay for the view. You can have an unobstructed view of the mountains, and pay $400k for 1,000 sq ft run down home.

    Maybe a 1 bedroom condo...maybe

ETA - based upon actual listings - nothing.  The lowest price is a 2 bedroom condo for $220k.  I have seen 1 bedroom condos around $190k in the past though.

  • Out home was 213k. That means a townhouse with 4 bedrooms, large yard, 1.5 baths, garage, finished basement.
200k will probably buy you the same, less one thing (no garage, most likely and no yard).

  • $200k would be a pretty nice house here. You'd get at least four bedrooms and two baths, and it would probably have some nice updates.

I'm hoping we can fix up our house and sell so we can move into a nicer house, so I've been looking.

  • 3 years ago we got our 2bd/1bath house for $109,000. So 200k could have gotten us a bigger house on a larger lot. I don't know the current market.
  • In my county, there are 16 properties that are under 200k. 2 are literally falling down and the rest are condos under 800 sq ft in the two high crime areas and they are all 190-199k. Oh, and two are in the retirement community. In my zip, nothing. The average price overall for my county is 850k and my zip is 1.6 million. 1.2mil will get you a 3/2 that needs some upgrading.

I checked for San Francisco (I am in the SF metro area). There are two places and both of them are deep in the serious ghetto and they are both 175k.

  • I put in my ZIP code and the cheapest thing that popped up was a POS 1 bd condo for $250,000. So I guess the answer is nothing. However you can get an awesome house for $10.7 million in my ZIP code. I have to say, we are the people that bring down the average value of this ZIP code. It is freaking expensive here! This thread is depressing.

  • In my neighborhood, not a damn thing. A little farther out, there are 700-790 sqft condos for 200k, though. The cheapest in my neighborhood for sale, right now, are well over 300k and the houses here were mostly built in the 20's and 30's. You can get a larger, newer house in North Portland for 200k.

  • For 200K in my area it could buy you a really crap 2 or 3 BR split level from the 70's. However, you can also pick up some decent 3 BR homes on short sale in our area if you'd prefer to go that route.
