Trouble TTC

Thinking of benching myself. Advice please.

At this morning's US, I found out that we only have one follicle that would be the right size for this IUI.  I know that all you need is 1 but it seems that the chances of success have got to be much lower with only 1.  It's going to cost us at least another $1,000 to finish this cycle.  Am I crazy for considering cancelling and trying again next month, maybe with more aggressive meds?
Ready to take the road less traveled.

Re: Thinking of benching myself. Advice please.

  • $1K to still spend is a good amount...but I guess it would depend on how much I'd spent so far.  I was pretty disappointed last week when we only had 1 or 2 mature enough follies at IUI time, but I had already spent over $2K on the injects cycle, and I was only going to pay $300 more for the IUI.  Since the next option was to end up to with too many eggs and be benched, I didn't want to have gone through $2K for no reason.  But if the money situation was the opposite (I hadn't spent as much so far), I would bench.

  • You aren't crazy. Which would you regret more - skipping a month or spending $1000? Is your RE willing to use more aggressive meds?

I've only ever had 1 at a time, and there were definitely times where I wanted to stop the cycle, but ultimately waiting was more painful than spending for us. What's right for you may be the opposite and it's not crazy.

  • I don't think that is crazy at all.  I've wondered that myself.  For me I have PCOS and I know if I lose 25 more pounds the meds will work much better so I benched myself to try to drop the weight to see if I can get more follies.  I'm sick of the 1 follie IUI coming up BFN every time.  Good Luck with your decision.
    Ba hahahaha!

  • I would move forward with 1 but that's just me as I would rather spend a little more than have to be benched for a cycle.  My current cycle cost us $3500 & I still only had 1 follie for IUI.  If DH would have said "it only takes one" one more time, I would have screamed but I guess it's true!!

  • We've always had 2-3 and since it's a male issue so TI will not work.  We'll be out about $500 if we cancel this cycle since we've already paid for a ton of meds (we were ready for another IVF cycle when our insurance decided not to pay for it).  I'm just so discouraged right now, especially with the way the clinic responded as if it's no big deal.  I think I will slap the next person who tells me it only takes one.

  • Thanks for the advice all. I'm going for another US tomorrow to see if the small ones are catching up at all. The money is a big issue of course but I also don't want to put myself through the 2WW now if I can increase the odds. The good thing is that my Dr. agreed to take a more aggressive approach if needed in the future.

  • I did it this month. At my first ultrasound I only had two and they weren't that big. The nurse said "it only takes one" and I'm like, I had four last month and it failed. We had about $2000 more to spend on that cycle and I didn't feel comfortable with it. I didnt feel like "it only takes one" was a good reason to spend several thousand dollars.

  • I don't know if you already made up your mind, but I think I would move forward with the IUI and one follicle. Having multiple follicles doesn't mean that you will be more successful- at least that's what I've learned from my personal experience. I would probably figure if I've already spent $500, might as well go all the way. This is just my opinion, and I really don't think there's a right or wrong choice. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
