@cramcakes Ok. You got me on Old School. I like that one. But honestly don't consider it a "Will Ferrell" movie because of all the other actors, plus he plays a regular type guy. But Anchorman, Step Brothers, that race driver one. Yeah no. Awful.
Another Halloween UO: I get that there are single parents, or people working on shifts. But if you go trick or treating every single year and never give candies, it's cheap.
How are you supposed to do both? You can't be two places at once.
- One parent can stay home
- You can send the kid with a group
- You can put a candy bowl in front of your door
- You can split the night in 2
- You can ask a grand parent /aunt /cousin to come home
... There are many ways you can contribute to the night other than just taking candies.

What makes you think that me or my H wants to go trick-or-treating with J alone? Or why should he only get to trick-or-treat for a little bit so that we can go home and give candy out to other people when all the other kids get to trick-or-treat all night? (I obviously mean when he's older.)
J is 6 months old so he's not going with a group. I live in an apartment building. I am not leaving a bowl of candy in the hallway.
Not everyone gives out candy. You just move on to the next house/door.
If he's 6 months old, you won't be trick or treating for hours? You could give candy when you're back.
To each their own really. I just find it cheap to take candy every single year and never give them. That's my point.

I agree with you.
We are both taking DD out together for the first half hour, for that time, we are putting out a bucket with a note that says "Please take only one!"

My UO is that you shouldn't be taking a 6 month old trick or treating. When we have kids too young to trick or treat, I plan on sitting in my driveway handing out candy and showing off my kid's adorable costume. If I see a 6 month old with no sibling, I know I'm just giving candy to a couple of adults to eat.
12 days of Christmas starts Christmas Day and ends the night before Epiphany. Epiphany is the 6th of January, and the 12 days end on the night of January 5th with Twelfth Night. Our church never did a holiday/Christmas party, we had an Epiphany party. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_days_of_Christmas
Not discounting what you said, because you are right, but here's my UO. I HATE it when people use wikipedia as their only reference. I think it's valuable in some cases, but when you base an entire argument on something you saw on wikipedia alone, I have a problem.
I actually had that thought as I was posting it, but I really didn't want to wade through the rest of the search results and I read the page and it had decent references. My source for it was 13 years of Catholic school and several Shakespeare classes (Twelfth Night is awesome). But I knew that some people want a source besides that. Generally I try not to just link a wiki, but that page looked decently solid.

I think neighborhoods that plan to have several/all of the houses hand out alcohol to the adults as they trick or treat is just wrong and dangerous. Parents go with kids to keep them safe but how affective is that when you take a shot at 7 or 8 houses along the way?

Um, whoa. Handing out alcohol is awesome. How is that dangerous?
My cousin and I used to take our kids treating with a big therm of spiked hot chocolate and a few houses gave us cans of beer for us and candy for the kids. It was a close knit neighborhood, we had tons of fun.
I'm walking around tonight with a coffee cup of wine. I see no danger in that.
*ETA: Of course, we're not getting plastered and driving our kids around or anything.

I never noticed this growing up, but it's becoming common in some close knit 'hoods around here. Adults will pass out candy, drinks/beer cans, dog treats for dressed up dogs. It's so much fun, and it gets adults involved and talking/meeting neighbors. It makes me miss my old neighborhood =[.
This is DD's last year treating since she is 12 unless next year she goes with friends, so now I'll get to pass out candy and I'll be doing the drinks and dog treats too! @emejay, I'm repaying my taking candy debt starting next year!

I don't think making your own ranch dressing is impressive. What is impressive as that half of this thread is about ranch dressing. LOL
I love ranch dressing but I think it's super gross when people order it as a side and dip everything they are eating in it. Yak.
I do this. We were just discussing this at work. Some places have better ranch than others. Dennys, Cheddars and Applebees...I could drink their ranch dressing.
To those who seem to have a ranch dressing fetish - can you tell me how often you eat this stuff? Are you dipping every meal? Is it just a few times a week? How much ranch dressing do you go through in - say - a week?
We buy condiments/salad dressing once in a blue moon, so I'm honestly curious.
A regular size Hidden Valley Ranch bottle lasts DH and I approximately 3-4 months in our house. That being said- I cook 4-5 times a week and don't make things that you would dip. The only times we use ranch at home is for pizza. We have fries or tator tots MAYBE once a month at home.
When we go out if I have fries or a sandwich or pizza I want ranch to dip everything in. Maybe it's because I don't eat it at home that I look forward to eating it out.

I don't eat ranch much anymore since I eat cleaner now, BUT I will/would eat it on: pizza, spaghetti, salads. I dip my french fries in it, and my burgers. YUM.
Oh, and I like to roll around naked in it.

Outback ranch dressing is the best. Wingstop rates a close second. I actually rarely eat it, maybe once a month, but it's mainly for things like pizza/wings/sometimes fries/ some restaurant salad (at home I just oil and vinegar).

Our neighborhood has a lot of through traffic so I see it dangerous to have that many people handing out jello shots and plain shots. There is at least 20 houses in our neighborhood that has made it known that they will be handing out that to every parent that wants one as they walk around. That is a bit different in my eyes than someone walking around with a beer or a glass of wine. I don't see that being dangerous. Taking multiple shots in an hour and taking your kids around and crossing busy streets? IMO, yes, that is dangerous.

Also, this entire thread makes me want to vomit. Ranch should be illegal. And while I'm at it, so should mayonnaise and sour cream.

Damn you @ScrappyLika and your fast Internet! You beat me by one minute, ha ha! Great minds think alike...
This may not actually be that unpopular of an opinion based on some of the PP. But, I LOVE HANSON. Did they become popular because of a weird song and a (maybe) made up word? Yes. Did they sing like and look like girls? Yes. Maybe still do. Taylor is prettier than most girls I know.
BUT!
They write their own music
They play their own instruments
They started their own music label at 18, 20, and 23 y/o
They are AMAZING live. Seriously.
And, they are still going strong!
That is more than most artists can say these days.

We go to SIL's neighborhood. And my kid is 2, so no, he's not going with a group.
I'm not putting candy out for the squirrels to steal.
You must have some pretty ballsy squirrels where you live that would dare leave the trees with trick or treaters running around everywhere. I'd be more worried that one kid would take all the candy. Nobody "just takes one."
I always "just take one" because I live in paranoia that I'm always going to get in trouble. At Target, I'm that person who will leave the line to put something back on the shelf exactly where I got it. I'm scared if I try and drop it off somewhere else, someone will see me and have me arrested. TOTALLY RATIONAL.
“When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a
thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the
beginning of fairies.” - J.M. Barrie Peter Pan
I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
Ugh, leggings last week, ranch dressing this week and Will Ferrell every week. These UO threads are becoming really boring. I do agree though that babies should not be out trick or treating unless they are w/ older siblings. I feel when they are that little is when the parents should stay home to pass out candy, so when it is their time to go trick or treating when they can actually participate the parents will have done their good deed of passing out candy so now it's their turn to collect the goods and let the other new babies/parents pass out candy. If it is the babies costume the parents want people to see, staying home and passing out candy will get more views than going out and competing with the masses! I don't know why anyone would want to do that anyway with a little baby. It seems like a lot of work and come on no 6 month old is eating a kit kat, so leave it for the kids that can.

The only people I don't want to see at my door on Halloween are 18 year olds without costumes on asking for candy.
The percentage of people who don't pass out candy at all, ever, in their lives and yet still take their kids trick or treating is so small that I think we can give that up to the karmic universe.
I think it's insanely unprofessional to show up to an office environment in Halloween crap. I'm looking at you coworker with a Peanuts shirt on. Just because it's button down doesn't mean it's office appropriate.
And I don't even want to touch the idiot that wore red contacts last year.
Because you were all dying for an update- it was not a button down Peanuts top. It was a fucking scrub top.
Phew. Thanks for the update. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat wondering about that guy's shirt. I can sleep well tonight.
Re: UO Thursday
- You can send the kid with a group
- You can put a candy bowl in front of your door
- You can split the night in 2
- You can ask a grand parent /aunt /cousin to come home
... There are many ways you can contribute to the night other than just taking candies.
To each their own really. I just find it cheap to take candy every single year and never give them. That's my point.
We are both taking DD out together for the first half hour, for that time, we are putting out a bucket with a note that says "Please take only one!"

Napoleon Dynamite=one if my favorite movies EVER!!!! Definitely in my top five!!! I admit even I had to watch it more than once--by the third time I totally got it and loved it.
I hate ranch dressing.
I am not trick-or-treating tonight. I am celebrating Samhain.
My UO is that I pretty much hate all boy bands except NKOTB and can't imagine listening to their holiday albums

This is our first Halloween in this neighborhood, so I'm excited to see how it all goes down, maybe we'll look like huge neewbs and get our house egged.

Also, this entire thread makes me want to vomit. Ranch should be illegal. And while I'm at it, so should mayonnaise and sour cream.
If you think Step Brothers or Ricky Bobby isn't funny and you don't chew Big Red, then fuck you.
Tonight, I plan on turning off my porch light, handing out zero candy and singing Christmas songs at the top of my lungs and I'm dedicating them to @emejay and @ghostmonkey.
