Okay maybe people bat an eye lash at the Halloween in August thing, but I don't think people get as upset about as they do with Christmas stuff. I just don't understand the visceral love/hate relationship with Christmas.
Hipsters drive me insane. Like, they make my skin crawl. Talking about obscure bands and wearing skinny jeans with a bad attitude does NOT make you cool.
The sight of a hipster with a moustache makes me physically ill. If they have a handlebar moustache I may even dry heave. It's completely irrational how much I hate them.
You both just described my BIL. Only he and my sister don't think they're hipsters. They "make fun of" real hipsters who are not them. Kind of like when I was punk rock in college and we'd make fun of goths...while wearing all black and going to Rasputina concerts.

I am honestly really surprised some of you aren't handing out candy b/c your H's aren't home. That is bizarre to me to be afraid to open the door to trick or treaters. I understand it's not as much fun, but still.
If we lived in a high traffic area I might have done it but we get less than 20 kids and last year a lot of them were older teens. I don't think they should be out trick or treating at 16. I NEVER answer the door to random people when DH isn't home. I just feel safer that way. I'm sure the kids will get plenty of candy without coming to my door.
Santa UO - I will never stand in line for 3 hours at a mall so my screaming baby can get a picture with Santa. Good on those who have the patience for that...but I do not.
You may change your mind when your little one asks you if he/she can go see Santa. ;-) Something about their little faces asking you this makes everything you ever said you wouldnt do go out the window ;-)
I guess my UO is that I think its NEVER too early for Christmas. I freaking love Christmas and would happily celebrate it from September 1st to June 30th. Christmas and Summer, only two seasons of the year.
Where we used to live there was a house that had Christmas decorations up all year long, including numerous lit tress inside. Everyone knew it as "The Christmas House" and mocked them. But thats my crazy old lady future right there- I will be the 95 yr old wearing an LED Christmas sweater in July. I secretly loved that house.
This! I LOVE Christmas. I am actually already 99% done Christmas shopping as in bought, wrapped, and tagged! We have a big family and all of my siblings/foster siblings are younger so we had a lot of gifts to buy! I love giving gifts and I am so excited to start the Christmas season! I won't decorate until the weekend after Thanksgiving though.

I was on another board briefly during my first pregnancy and there was a repeat offender of this. She wasn't shirtless, but lifted it up far enough to see under boob. Just... no.
Oh no. That's just the worst. Pregnant women are beauties, but we don't need to see everything...
On the whole Santa thing - I hate when parents think it's cute or funny to have pictures with their child screaming on Santas lap.
No. It's not cute. You're child is genuinely terrified to be with a a stranger. Just wait until their older.
I think it's HYSTERICAL and AWESOME. Call me evil if you'd like -- the tears last for all of 30 seconds, but the photographic brilliance lives forever in graduation and rehearsal dinner slide shows. A screaming me at the age of 2 on a jolly Santa's lap is one of my favorite childhood photographs.
Maybe I'm hypersensitive, but I just feel bad. And I don't like the photo of myself screaming and Santas lap at a year old.
I also have two nieces who are/were terrified of Santa until ages 4 and 5 and would get upset just seeing him from afar. Forcing them to see Santa at that point would just be mean.
I am definitely not advocating forcing an older child who is legitimately afraid of Santa to sit on his lap for a photo... I'm talking about the 1 and 2 year olds who have separation anxiety about EVERYONE who are peachy keen in line, crying for 30 sec during the photo, and immediately happy again in parents' arms. Not saying you should do the Santa photo with your baby if you're not into it, but I think we can all tell the difference between the two situations regardless of our feelings on the matter.

This is always so bizarre to me. To never answer the door. It's really odd. I choose to not live my life afraid that every person coming to door is secretly an ax murdered. Sure, I don't let a stranger in. But I'll certainly not ignore the door.
And for trick or treating of all nights - they aren't random people - they are kids trick or treating.

But for some people it's not a choice they make. For one reason or another they do live their lives like there is a rapist/murderer behind every door and in every alley. Obviously those people (like me) should seek therapy because its not a healthy way to live. But everyone has their own history that contributes to their anxieties.

Meh, it really depends on the kids. I hate seeing a pic of kid or baby crying on santas lap. Just hate them. But, I can see you take your super-excited kid up and they cry after sitting there for 5 seconds. Makes sense.
I have no picture of my 5 year old w/ Santa. It isn't separation anxiety or anything else. She is or at least was scared to death. The year she was 2 & 3 we couldn't even walk past santa on the same level at the mall. Making her sit on Santa's lap would have been cruel. That I do judge.
Again, not going to drag my child by her hair to see Santa if she is legitimately afraid.
I can't stand people in my office who shout down the hallway like every second of the workday. Do you guys remember that toilet paper commercial where everybody was whispering at work? That's my dream office.

Aw! I like the shirt pulled up! Totally planning on doing those when I'm bigger. No one needs to see my rolls now. but just pulled up enough to see the bump. No boobs, no bra. And I'm not a huge fan of the unbuttoned jeans/visible belly shot. Looks too much like you're getting undressed.

@jellysparkles: I totally know exactly what town and store you are referring to and I'm so jealous! I haven't gotten to visit in a few years, but I totally second the happy place feeling. (I like Christmas in moderation; I hate it before November, but once November hits BRING IT ON!!)) I grew up about 1.5 hours away and we went a lot more often when I was younger. Now I want chicken and mashed potatoes...

There's definitely a difference bt the older and younger child, and I agree. It still rubs me the wrong way, though.
For the record, I do plan on taking DS (he'll be 20 m) to see Santa but going to aim for one that's free/low key event in case he flips. He didn't care about Santa one way or another last year.

Oh, I definitely judge stores that put Halloween stuff out in September.
It just all blends into one massive HalloweenThanksgivingChristmasNewYearValentine'sDayEasterFourthofJuly!!! hodgepodge disaster.
I actually think Halloween gets cheated retail wise. Christmas gets put out before Halloween is even over. Then by New Years the Valentines Day stuff is out (WHICH BTW VALENTINES DAY HAS TO BE THE DUMBEST HOLIDAY EVER), and as soon as the Valentines stuff goes on clearance, Easter crap is out. Halloween stuff doesn't usually come out until October 1st. As someone who loves Halloween, this is too late. Halloween is a month long holiday for me so technically it starts the 1st. I can never find Halloween stuff before October. Target is the worst offender, they take forever to clear out their back-to-school crap and set up the Halloween stuff. Plus Halloween decor gets lumped together with fall/Thanksgiving pumpkin and gourd stuff.
I love Pesto and sourdough bread! My FIL has a sourdough starter that was brought to Alaska over the Chilkoot pass during the Alaska gold rush in the 1890's.
I am so, so jealous of your FIL! All I have is a starter named Zeke who my friend started in 2011. And I probably need to give him sourdough-CPR, now that I think of it. Haven't checked on him in a while.

I do not believe all car seats provide the same amount of safety. I know the standard Bump answer to car seat brand / model inquiries is "all seats must pass the same safety standard testing," and I 100% acknowledge that that is true... But passage doesn't equal performance. Just because performance results of these tests aren't readily available in the States (WHY??!!), doesn't mean they don't exist and they don't show some seats perform better than others.
We have a Britax Marathon as our everyday convertible car seat, and we have a Cosco seat (can't remember the model but it's the entry level) that we use purely for air travel because it's so light and easy to carry...there is no one on earth who can convince me that the Cosco seat is just as safe as the Britax. Do I think DD would survive a crash in the Cosco? Sure, otherwise I wouldn't put her in it (and, for the record, I don't think Expensive automatically means Safe) -- but I'm way more confident in the performance of our everyday seat.
I agree wholeheartedly. And as a consumer I feel like I deserve to know how it performed in safety tests.

This. Hating hipsters is so 2012.
I, on the other hand, would prefer hipsters to Top 40 or new country listening Applebee's eating suburbanites any day. But I live in Portland so I'm pretty much immune to hipsterism at this point.
Here's one: I don't understand 100% child-led parenting. And even more so don't understand parents who choose to use this method of parenting and then bitch when their kids do shit they don't want them to do.
?? What in the world is child-led parenting!? It sounds like anything but a good idea. I'm not finding a very definitive article on Google...

Valentines day is a stupid, unromantic, over hyped "holiday" that we should just get rid of so that restaurants and florists can no longer hike their prices up and lower their quality simultaneously for just one day.
Also, parents who refer to their husband / wife as Mummy or Daddy when their kids aren't around to hear. Creepy.

I so agree with this. I even find it a bit creepy when they refer to each other this way when the kids are around, but they're not talking to the kids. DH is Daddy when I'm talking to DS, but I call him by name when talking to him.

I have zero ZERO problems with having naked pictures (and people seeing said pictures) of my kids when they're newborns, let alone in an ultrasound. An ultrasound!!! Wtf!
On the nickname debate. I'm legally a Katie, not a Katherine. I had a 4th grade teacher that INSISTED on calling me Katherine. It drove me so mad that notes from my mother wouldn't even get her to stop. My names not Katherine. If you don't want to talk to me because my name is Katie, that's totally fine with me :-)
