I just got a BFN on my 3rd Clomid + Ovidrel Shot + TI + IUI. My RE had said if after 3 it doesn't work, then we need to move to IVF. So we are taking this cycle 'off' from a medication/hormone perspective (still will try on our own) and will start IVF the next cycle. I also started acupuncture this past cycle and will continue since I am willing to try anything that works at this point. I have an appt next Tues and they will give me the full schedule, etc at that time.
Background: I just turned 36, husband is 38. Been married 3+ years. TTC since Mar 2012, with a 3 month break when I took a new job last summer. Started testing, etc in June. So far, nothing has come up as to why we are not pregnant, so I guess that makes us unexplained - which is more frustrating.
Really hoping we manage to get pregnant this cycle on our own. Any advice on how to prepare for what is next is greatly appreciated.
Going from Clomid straight to IVF seems like a big jump... what about an injectible IUI cycle... the success rate is much higher than Clomid.

Hi - yeah - I have heard someone else ask that - but the 3 Clomid IUIs were using a Trigger Shot to induce ovulation - so is that what you mean by injectibles?
I did get 2 mature follicles on 2 cycles, and 3 on my first. My RE said since I was responding to the clomid, and they were already doing trigger, there was no need to continue (since it isn't working) and that the next route was IVF.
I have an appointment next Tuesday and will ask what they do for injects cycles at that time.
Welcome aboard! I'm new here myself. I'm so sorry none of the IUIs worked out. We are also "unexplained" infertility and it can be really frustrating. I completely understand.
I agree with the PP, that is a huge leap from Clomid to IVF. Is there any reason why your RE wants to be so aggressive?
Hi @Maellen I am sorry you are finding yourself here as well. Unexplained is definitely very frustrating.
I am very confused since I guess I thought I was doing injectibles since I was using a HCG shot (ovidrel) with the Clomid and IUI. Is there something else that is called injectibles?
At any rate, I do trust my RE - she has a very good reputation and good outcomes. She came highly recommended from my gyn and others. So if she says IVF is next, then we are ok with that - as I know everyone else here feels - whatever it takes to get pregnant and have a baby sooner rather than later.
My RE had the same plan for us: he recommended aggressive Clomid cycles (meaning Clomid with an Ovidrel trigger shot) and if that didn't work, that we should move on to IVF. His logic was success rates not improving for multiple IUIs combined with our age (I was 36 when we first met with him).
When I asked about an injectable cycle (which I took to mean other medications than Clomid and Ovidrel--a quick search says they're Gonadotropins), he said that the success rates were not dramatically different. YMMV based on your specific case. I was responding very well to Clomid; our diagnosis was unexplained IF. Friends of ours did not have any success with Clomid, but have had multiple successes with injectable cycles (not sure if they did TI or IUI--she's younger than I am).
FWIW, we wound up getting pregnant during a break between medicated cycles. The body is weird and frustrating.

Yes, our RE said that essentially the outcomes rates would be essentially the same as with IUI / Clomid/Ovidrel. Hence moving to IVF. And the fact that I am 36, I am sure influences the next steps.
And congrats on getting BFP in between cycles (the same actually happened to a close friend of mine) so who knows - maybe on this cycle when we are 'on our own' things will work! Wishing you all the best as you continue through the next few months!
Hi ladies injectible IUI's are usually when meds are all through injections, the "trigger" sometimes ovidrel sometimes something else is also an injection but not generally consider "the injectible IUI".
