Hi all!
Short: We welcomed a baby GIRL on 10-16-13 at 6:04 pm. DH and I thought we were having a boy the whole pregnancy, so it was a great surprise when he announced "it's a girl!" Her name is Vivian and she was 7 lbs 12.9 ounces, 22" long at birth.
Long: Labor and delivery was intense. After finally getting to 10 cm I pushed off and on for 5 hours while vomiting in between. Her head was cocked to the side and was hitting my pubic bone so the nurse and doctor kept trying to turn her face with their hands which resulted in lots of lovely swelling for me. She had meconium in her water and the cord was wrapped around her neck and under her arm which contributed to shoulder dystocia. My doc gave me the option of a c-section or using the vacuum, I chose the latter. DH watched her being born and said it was quite frightening to see her come out blue and limp. The doctor rubbed and suctioned her aggressively and the NICCU team whisked her away to the side of our room where she got an initial Apgar of 2. DH went to be with her and soon enough her color and responsiveness improved. He brought me pictures of her to look at while I delivered the placenta and got sewn up, then she was able to be with me.
I am so in love and am really enjoying the bonding time with her and DH at home. The first 5 days were really tough, I cried at the drop of a hat and we had to go back to the hospital everyday for five days after we left to have her bilirubin levels tested via heel pricks (ugh!) I felt like such a failure bc I couldn't get her to nurse well and she was losing weight and her jaundice was increasing. Breastfeeding has been tough but I think we're rounding a corner, she would not latch on my right side for days and I met with 2 lactation consultants who didn't really solve the poor latch...it really just took patience, perseverance and creativity on my part (I discovered she would latch when I fed her on my side). I felt a lot of pressure from the pediatrician to either figure out bf right away or give her formula bc of the jaundice and decreasing birth weight, so I pumped and gave her formula when she wouldn't latch for feedings. Her bili level peaked and went down (like it usually does) and she is back to gaining weight (like newborns usually do). Luckily she went back to EBF without issue.
Wishing all of you new mamas congratulations on your new additions and sending good thoughts for those still waiting for your babies to make their appearance.

PS - She crosses her little bird legs most of the time, it's so cute. She must have been tucked away like that in my belly.
