Re: GTKY College Edition

  • I went to a small liberal arts college in MN for undergrad and completed my MA and PhD at University of Wisconsin Madison.

I chose the lib arts school because I wanted to up someplace where no one from my high school was attending and because it had an excellent music program. (I wasn't a music major, but I am a musician.) UW Madison was very good in my field of history.

  • Eastern Nazarene for undergrad. Not really sure why... I was lazy I think. Knew a lot of people from growing up that were going there and it made my parents happy. I really didn't like it and didn't know you could transfer out... But I met DH there... Took a bunch of years to become more than buddies but we got there!
For grad school I went to Boston University. Loved it for grad school! Hate the cost!!

University of Florida over here. BS in business/finance and a BA in Russian language & literature. I went there because it was free through scholarships and was the best school in Fla. I was in a co-ed fraternity- AKPsi. And yes, the fraternity was an amazing experience! Some of my best memories are from those 4 years. I remember thinking how good my life was, I knew how lucky I was :)

    @elyse05 are you Russian ?
  • I went to West Liberty University in WV for undergrad I chose it because they offered me one hell of a scholarship to play softball. I majored in businesses specialized in accounting and management.

Then I got my MBA @ Salem international university they offered an online program and specialized in international business.

No Greek life for me. Softball was it's own sorority.

I did the first two years of undergrad at University of Maryland, then wanted to be closer to home and finished up at SUNY Stony Brook. As my screen name would suggest, I was a Sigma Delta Tau at both schools. T I went to Touro Law School on Long Island for a year and a half but hated law school, so I never finished. Instead, I took my law school credits and got a second bachelors degree through Kaplan (online) in paralegal studies.
STD, just kidding :) really, I am.... I know how defensive those SDT's can be over the STD NN.

Ha, I have been called STD on these boards forever, I think everyone's mind automatically goes there, lol! I was actually never called that in college though, we were know as "spends daddy's trillions" lol. @etoille- I can't believe we both were in SDT and did the tier 4 law school thing...Touro is kinda the. John Marshall of the east coast. Interestingly enough, my husband was also a biochem major, worked in a lab and then decided to go to law school instead. He's a practicing attorney now and loves it, and cannot imagine doing anything science related! As for the sorority thing, I am sadly not surprised. One of my good friend's older sister was in SDT and was even one of those girls that comes to visit the chapter and check on things, and she felt that she was treated the same way as you with regard to not being Jewish. I think different chapters treat their non Jews very differently. Pat Maryland, we only had like two non Jews in the chapter, but my Stony Brook chapter was extremely diverse (Hispanics, Asians, etc.)...I think we may have been the black sheep chapter, lol!

    I was there from 96 to 2001. :)
  • I did my undergrad at what was then a small women's college in Pittsburgh PA- Chatham College. Now it's Chatham University because of it's large co-ed graduate programs. The undergrad is still a Women's College though. I went there because I'm bad at geography. I live in NYC so I figured how much further away could Pittsburgh be since Philly was so close. Yeah. It's far. But when I visited the campus I loved it- so I went- it looked like English boarding school and I'd always wanted to go to boarding school- so. I majored in English and History there and minored in Women's Studies.

I went to WVU for my MA and PhD both in English Lit.  Sadly, I made this choice for the MA because the woman I was dating went there (by the time I moved to WV we'd broken up)  And by the time I got to the PhD I could either stay where I already knew the faculty and students or try and leave and start all over again. I stayed.  My dissertation was on desire and the body in the medieval mystics. Truly useless.

However, it wasn't such a bad choice- I wound up with a tenure track job while I was ABD- which of course made it take forever for me to earn my PhD- which I finally did in 2008.

I went to Kent State University and got a BS in nutrition. I went there because that's where my two best friends decided to go. I loved it though. Now I'm going to a community college by my house for an associate RN degree and then I'll take online classes to get a BSN.

@rmnam1 what year did you graduate?

I'm an oldie :) I graduated in 2004. I loved Kent State too. I went because I got a full ride nursing scholarship. But I loved the campus and the whole city. I went back just this past year and they have done so much to the campus and the city. It seems awesome. Wish I could go back! When did you graduate?
2010. I know, the campus and city look amazing. My husband is from Stow so we visit often.

  • @ladyblue07 we must have been there at the same time- lots of championships! I was there 2005-2009. If you wanna meet a bunch of football and baseball players take the gardening class! They didn't even bring pencils to class.

@clyde013 I'm not really russian- I just liked how Russian was so different - gave my brain a workout. I didn't realize they had a different alphabet until the 1st day of class! I almost cried. Later I found out my grandmother was from Ukraine.

I went to the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown, and studied international history. I actually specialized in international relations between Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England from 1014-1315, so that is super-useful on a day-to-day basis. Hah.

I picked it because I really wanted to do something with politics/IR, and I also just fell in love with it when I visited. I think it was 25% a logical choice, 75% a gut reaction.

ETA: no Greek life at gtown...but plenty of partying!

@sdtchica13 It wasn't a total loss. I did learn about kosher hot dogs and kugel! :) But yeah a lot of us were pretty pissed off almost all the time because of the reverse discrimination.

Totally not worth it unless you got matzoh ball soup out of the deal, lol!
  • I went to Yeshiva University for undergrad so that I could study in Israel for the year and still have my credits counted. I went to Hunter College for my Master's. They had a decent program that didn't cost a ton. I was teaching already so they had classes after work hours.
