Dreft Laundry Detergant or Non-Baby Detergant

I keep going backand forth with this idea. I've even asked all my friends/family and they have mixed answers. Do I or don't I buy Laundry Detergant for the baby or use what I use (Era)? What did you do or are doing?

Re: Dreft Laundry Detergant or Non-Baby Detergant

  • We switched to all free and clear? The white bottle with no added perfumes or anything. My son has the most sensitive skin , can't even use Johnson and Johnson products, but all free and clear has been fine. My doc had said any of the brands that are perfume free are fine most the time

  • I used to use All Free and Clear since I have sensitive skin, but I also found that the regular Tide powder works really well for me and my sensitive skin kiddos. I break out in hives with many other detergents.

  • When mine were newborns/infants we used All free and clear too. Definitely going to use that again.
  • we used the same detergent for everybody in the house - but we use biokleen so it's a very natural detergent to begin with.

the idea of having a baby-specific detergent seems silly to me.  dreft markets itself as being very gentle and safe, but it's just a bunch of chemicals.  blech!  better to just stick to a good quality natural detergent than buy into the gimmick and use a chemical-y product that claims to be "super safe",
  • Be careful with all natural detergents. Some contain enzymes, which clean really well, but can destroy sensitive skin. Ask me how I know.

All Free and Clear is what works for me since I have a myriad allergies. I am going to go with the assumptions that my kids have a myriad allergies too, until proven otherwise.

  • We use All Free and Clear as well. Dreft is a waste of money.

  • Another vote for All Free and Clear. DD never had any skin issues and I switched her over to our regular Tide once the All was used up (but that took forever, since it was only being used for her tiny loads of tiny clothes, sheets and burp rags!).

  • We never changed our detergent when DD was born. She was completely fine.

  • I switched to All Free and Clear before DD was born and use it for everyone.  It works and is much more affordable that Dreft plus I don't wanna separate her clothes out.
  • I think any "free and clear" detergent is fine. When Skippy was a baby I used Arm & Hammer free and clear, and it worked really well. I also avoided using dryer sheets.

  • Well I used All free and clear for the first year for each of the girls and then switched them to tide. My hubby has to have tide because his gym and army uniform smell like puke if we don't. This one will get free an clear for a year then to tide! Don't waste your money! That stuff is a ripe off!!!
  • I think Dreft is overrated. It has pretty similar properties to Tide and you can use free & gentle for sensitive skin. Neither of my babies had an issue with that and DD did have sensitive skin. We use f&g for all of our laundry.

  • I personally think Dreft is a marketing scam. It has perfumes and a number of other chemicals. We use whatever free and clear is on sale - usually All or Purex - for the entire family's clothes.

  • I have an HE machine, but I'm starting to see fewer and fewer detergents for non-HE machines at the store in general.

  • We use regular tide detergent, never had a problem. If they had shown any skin sensitivity to it, I would have changed, but all good in the laundry hood

  • I used Eco something Free and Clear for DS.  I mainly bought it because it had good reviews for CDs but used it on his clothes for about 6 months, too.  Then I started using Tide Original and that's what I've used since.  He doesn't have super sensitive skin and I HATED the smell of Dreft so we never worried about it.

  • If you walk down the laundry soap I'll you'll notice that it pretty much goes from expensive to the cheapest and I got the cheapest one that's free of dyes or perfumes... As that can sometimes irritant tiny baby's skin. (Draft has perfume in it actually)

I use that for the first couple weeks and then I washed his clothes with our normal detergent and he had no problem with it so we just used up one bottle of the clear and free stuff and then swapped to washing his clothes with the rest of our clothes!

  • Dreft has too much junk in it. Free and clear.
  • I never used specialty detergent like Dreft for my baby beyond that bottle someone have me at the shower. I make my own detergent (for cost and how clean it gets things) and she never had any issues. However, I did wash her clothes separately and that might've helped.

    This exactly!
  • Dreft smells like garbage to me. We never bothered with it. We used tide free and clear and now just regular tide for everyone. No issues. We will likely get a big bottle of the free and clear again for that first year or so, but then tide it is!

  • Yup I just used free and clear. No need to waste money on Dreft.

  • We use Rockin Green Hard Rock for the clothes and diapers. Our water is so hard here we have to replace the screens in the taps once a month or the water won't flow.
  • We used Tide Free and Clear to start with and sometimes just use regular tide now. DS has sensitive skin but this does not bother him. He did have a bad rash from All though when we tried it b/c it was cheaper :/

For those of you that use All Free and Clear, does everyone have high efficiency washers? I was in Target the other day and they only had the HE version.
We have a high efficiency. I see the Purex Free and Clear that I'm currently using is good for both types of washers. The All Free and Clear I have for when I'm out of my current Purex bottle is only for HE (as you observed). I see Amazon sells detergent, some with the Subscribe and Save option and free shipping, if you have problems finding non-HE Free and Clear near you.

  • We use all free & clear or the Costco brand free & clear .. whichever is cheaper that day. Never bothered my kids when they were newborns & DD & DH have super sensitive skin.
  • Eco-Green baby here!
  • I have crazy sensitive skin and don't want to take the chance.
  • I used to wash my baby's clothes in ivory snow. Love the smell. However we've been switching over to non toxic cleaners etc and now make my own detergent.

Nope I have a regular washer. You can use HE detergent in your regular machine just not vice versa. :)

Nope -- All makes a regular version, too. It's usually cheaper than Tide free & clear

Costco has "All" free and clear on sale for two 86 load bottles for $11.50. It was a really good deal. :)
