  • WTH Cora is in the top 10!? I purposely chose a name I liked that wasn't popular. Guess I was wrong.

  • There's no way this is true - North? That means thousands of people have been using it since Kim and Kanye. Weird!

  • Haha @kristabelieve - I have spent the last 5 minutes trying to figure that out!

I just looked again at the social security website for the most popular names for 2012, and these lists look nothing alike. I realize that's last years, but the lists don't dramatically change year to year...

  • @buckeyebride22 - Cora was #155 last year. I doubt it jumped that much without a celebrity baby naming :)
  • Rowan, Kai, Sawyer & Emerson were all on our list for this baby, ha!

Kai was actually my dog's name that recently passed away. I was going to use it for a MN for a boy. We crossed Rowan off pretty early b/c it's too close to Reid. But Sawyer & Emerson were our top two girl names. Em won :)

  • I'm still determined that Emerson is a boy's name and my first choice for my little dude.

    But seriously Django?? Imogen??
  • Ugh. Elliot is a top contender for a girl for us. I guess it's good and bad.

Yeah, there's no way these are going to be the actual top tens for 2013. Django?! Nope.
That makes so much more sense. I was so confused as to how these names were on the most popular list.

  • Yeah and nameberry tends to be the more unique names...so I highly doubt they'll actually wind up in the US Census top 10...not that there's anything wrong with name berry I just feel like they bring up more of the non-mainstream names.

  • According to this paragraph from the article it sounds like these are names most frequently viewed on Nameberry's website, but not actually used. Which makes a lot more sense.

"Nameberry tallies which names attract the most views among the 14 million page views for all of the names on its site. The Nameberry popularity list measures which names parents are considering for their children in the future."
That makes a lot more sense! Some of those names are...interesting.

  • i have a hard time thinking Imogen is up there

  • Thank goodness this is just a nameberry thing- or I'd be upset because BOTH of our girl names are on here...haha. Not that it really matters, considering I'm an Ashley and it's really no big deal to have a popular name.

  • Maybe lots of Downton Abbey fans are naming their little girls Cora!
  • @ashleywiz- I think it's funny because I don't want our girls' names to be too crazy popular. But my husband is an Andrew and he said he's never really been bothered by it.

@ac1259 I completely understand not wanting it to be too crazy popular, and I hope it isn't because as a kid having 3 Ashley W's in my 3rd grade class was a little excessive-- but on the other hand, it's better (IMO) than having a super obscure name that people have a hard time pronouncing and spelling [though, people even screw up Ashley somehow...]

@ashleywiz- Yeah it's amazing what people can screw up...My DD's name is Bethany..I've definitely had people mis-hear me sometimes and think her name is Stephanie...I corrected them and said "no with a  B" and they were really confused..lol

Yeah we refuse to use a name that is in the top 100. I haven't referenced Name Berry before, but I use BabyNameWizard to see how popular a name is.

  • Emerson is our LO's name - she's a girl. I have always loved the names and have only ever met one other real life Emerson and she is 10. I don't know where it's a top 10 name bc it certainly isn't here - at least that I'm aware of.

@angiek1 -yeah I can see not wanting a top 100 name...though at this point if we have a boy he might be nameless because we can't seem to settle on a name- so when we do, I could give a hoot where that name happens to fall on the popularity scale. hah!

I tried to find a similar article on 2012 names from about this time last year but no luck.

Who is seriously considering the name North?  Poor kids..

  • Never heard of Imogen. I have a feeling someone made this up with some idea that it would sound exotic and kind of like Imagine. Then some other misguided souls obviously clicked on it by accident while lost on Nameberry's site.

Or they saw it and thought, what? That's a name? And clicked on it out or sheer curiosity hahaha
  • Imogen is one of my fave names. It is a real name! It is Celtic, and means maiden. It was our second pick for this LO. I'm pretty sure it is not in any "top" name lists though.
  • I'm surprised at the popularity if Imogen. I've always liked the name and had several friends with that name - maybe it's from the UK? Also, I think people are so concerned with not having a "top 100" name that they're choosing more uncommon names which simply makes those names popular!!
  • Both of our top choices for B/G names are there!

@dishylo I think you're right about Imogen being on the list because of the UK. I don't understand all of the surprised posts above because it's such a popular name over here!
The first time I heard the name Imogen was in the movie 'About a Boy' with Hugh Grant from the early '00's. I think it's cute, but I agree, definitely very English sounding!

My cousin's name is Verity, and we had talked about that for a girl's name, but we just wouldn't pronounce it the same way here and it would come out ugly sounding. People in UK tend to pronounce their 'T's a little bit better than us Canuck folk!

  • {head tilt} I guess it's a good thing 'old fashioned' names are making a comeback. I don't think I can take another news story about some couple naming their child 'You-nique' or 'Hashtag' {shudders}

  • I love the name Imogen, mainly because of Imogen Heap.

My Cavalier who died in April, Emma, was meant to be named Imogen, and my mom hated the name and talked me out of it. So, I nickname her Emmi (pronounced: Immi).

I love Harper, Eleanor, and Amelia, though. Like, really, really, really love them.

  • I just don't even know what to make of these lists. I can go to 10 different sites, and on some our name (Oliver) doesn't rank at all, or is in the 70s of the top 100, and in others it's in the top 10. It seems like it was #1 in the UK a couple years back. So we gave up and are just going with it because we love it.
