Baby's room without natural light?

Hi ladies! The hubs and I are looking for a new apt with more space now that we're expecting (we live in chicago). We found a unit that we like, but what would be the nursery faces a brick wall allowing very little natural light in. The room is basically dark unless the lights are on. Does anyone else find this to be a problem?

Re: Baby's room without natural light?

  • I like a lot of natural light in all our rooms, but it would save you from having too get the black out curtains :)

  • Does it have a window? I would be more concerned about not getting fresh air than light. I don't think it would be a deal breaker if you love the place but I would certainly keep it in mind while looking.

  • Yeah, the good thing is that it does have a window, so fresh air wouldn't be a problem, it's just really dark even with the window :-/
  • I would consider that a plus. Blackout curtains are expensive and ours are always shut anyway.

  • The darker the better :) Even at 3 years old my son only uses his room for naps and sleeping and we've had blackout curtains up almost the whole time. He sleeps much better and longer in a dark room.
  • Yeah, like PP's have mentioned you'll want it dark anyways for naps/nighttime. I'd say if you love the place the lack of natural light shouldn't stop you from getting it :)

I think it's fine. It's only for sleeping!

ETA I've had a bitch of a time finding blackout curtains because TOO much light comes into my DD's room and wakes her up early & makes daytime napping impossible
  • It's a huge bonus! DS's room has been BLACKED out since birth- it's a perfect cue (and very natural way) to enhance sleep.  I can't even see my hand in front of my face and he's slept all night since 2 months.  My room is the same lol.

  • It will be fine. Bigger consideration to me would be how long you plan to stay there, amount of storage, parks nearby, child friendly building, ceiling material (annoying neighbors below when Lo walks), and schools.

  • I wish our future baby's room had less natural light! We can get curtains for the normal windows but we have these stupid circle windows in the bedrooms that let in a lot of light. I'm not sure how we're gonna tackle yet.
  • Modishmom had great suggestions!
Parks, schools, child friendly area are way more important then a dark room. Which I also think is a mini plus :)

  • I agree, when DS was born I made sure it was dark at night and light during the day and he had no issues with his days and nights!

Another plus to know Windows is that you don't have to worry about blinds, they can be a choking hazard! You also don't have to worry about where you put your crib you can put it anywhere you want!

Our son ended up in our room for the first year anyway and you can always open other windows to keep things it circulating :) (and your baby isn't going to live 24/7 in his room... You may find yourself more in the living room or your bedroom :) )
