  • I don't drink, however I did have half a glass of wine towards the end of my third trimester last pregnancy. Not exactly rebellious. I eat deli meat. I think I probably would eat sushi if it were in the budget right now.

  • Do you guys think you'll continue to break the rules in public once you really start to show? I'm not so sure I'm going to want to sit at my favourite sushi restaurant and get glares. I may end up getting my DH to carry out. Thoughts?

Oh I did all the time last pregnancy! Sushi and coffee! The only time I felt really out of place was buying wine. I was having a girls dinner at my house and I bought two bottles of wine. I asked the guy working there for advice. I was like "I'm totally not a wine drinker at all (lie) but I'm having company over and want to get something decent, what do you recommend?" Lol.

  • Awesome! I just keep having flashbacks of Skyler in BB lighting up in her car while another woman glares. Different circumstance, I know. I don't think I'll worry too much, but I may leave the whiskey binging till I get home. :P

  • I do what I want. I don't drink any alcohol and I never eat sushi anyways, but I drink regular coffee because there is no point in decaf. I'm just more selective about where I get certain "off limit" foods.

  • My actual option would be "I follow my doctor's orders about everything in moderation."

I actually have yet to partake in lunch meat, but will likely do so at some point. I've eaten hit dogs, I stay away from raw fish (sob!), have decaf coffee on the reg, have had teeny tasting sips of wine, and am using all my 3-free nail polishes to death. There's really no rhyme or reason to how I do things, I guess just be careful and don't overdo anything.

  • I didn't know which one to pick because i am a rule follower but i drink coffee. I will continue drinking coffee when i am showing like i did last time. Under 200 mg is ok. People can judge me all they want in that regard.

Me too!  Every morning!  No one, NO ONE, wants to see me with out my coffee.  (Although all additional caffeinated beverages (read: afternoon Starbucks) are decaf.

One of my BFFs ate sushi through her entire pregnancy.  I've read that as long as you are getting it at a reputable place, it is fine.  The main reason to not eat it is the lead, but also in case you get sick, you will become dehydrated.  Eat up!

  • I am pretty much a stickler for the rules but I don't judge others  for their choices. It's their body/baby they can do what they want!

I have a decaf latte on Sundays when I go get the Sunday newspaper. It's my weekly tradition and it makes me happy :)

I do think though, once I'm late in the 2nd tri, I'll have a small glass of wine with dinner once every couple of weeks. I only don't now because I want to make sure the baby is nice and comfy in there!
    This is me exactly.

I wouldn't do it.  It would be a bummer at work but I still woudn't do it.  I haven't seen any definative research on cleaning supplies and how they affect your baby but I dought there will ever be a study like that.

I use vinegar, lemon and baking soda (ya, I'm one of those).  Every once in a while I need soft scrub with bleach and I make DH do those parts.

  • I totally would love to be "one of those" but my husband picked up a second job and I feel guilty making him do any of the cleaning. I also didn't know about vinegar and lemon, I'll switch over. Thank you!
  • It's our 3rd Anniversary today and I'm debating having a half glass of wine after dinner.  I'll probably get DH to order a glass and just have a sip or two from his.

IMO natural cleaners work better than most stuff you can buy and it's way cheaper (except things that need bleach, I can't live without that).

You have a right to know what you are working with. They should have a safety data sheet (msds) for the cleaning substance you use. I would ask to see it. I'm a chemist and I went over what I was working on with my dr. so I'm pretty familiar with working with harsh substances and the msds. If you message me what it is I could probably look it up for you but as always talk to your dr.

I don't drink alcohol. I am not much of a medication taker anyway, so if I need it, I'll stick to the approved list

It's called "spirit restroom cleaner" by Kay
  • There is also "oven cleaner" by Kay I use often.
  • Glad there are others out there who are a little loose with the rules. I don't drink but I'm not as careful about what I eat. My one friend was a stickler about everything and my other friend told me I should smoke a little pot to help with nausea and in moderation would not hurt. I will not do that but it is just interesting different people's extremes.

I cannot wait for late second tri when I will allow myself to eat it again.

Yep! I don't even think about it. It's not like I'm standing on the sidewalk with a fifth of jack Daniels in one hand and a cigarette in the other...

Seriously, is the "under 200mg of caffeine" rule new or something? I feel like everyone (including some women with kids) are like "You can't have caffeine while pregnant!" Ummm, my tall macchiato is 65mg of caffeine, I could have three of them if I wanted! What's up with that?
  • I eat sushi, but I stay away from the large predator fish. I drink half calf - a low caffeine coffee from Green Mountain and I stay away from chocolate (also has caffeine). I don't drink alcohol ever, but I love me some deli meat!!! I try and stay healthy and make are I eat a lot broccoli and kale, but I LOVE ME SOME CHEESY NACHOS!

  • I think it's funny that so many of you have experienced people getting judgey.  I'm the first in my group of friends to be pregnant and they definitely didn't know about any of the "rules" (except alcohol and smoking of course) so I'm assuming the judgey people are recent moms or people who are around a lot of parents.  The 'rules' are not as common knowledge as you might think.  My mom was appalled when I told her I wasn't supposed to have lunch meat.  30 years ago, you were doing well if you chose not to smoke cigarettes!  As far as breaking the rules in public, I will definitely keep doing what I'm doing including buying DH beer at the grocery store and occasionally drinking diet coke.

  • Caffeine is my downfall.  I can't start the morning with out Diet Coke or Starbucks.  I'm sorry- it makes me a functioning human.

  • I follow most of the rules except with DS I had half a beer in my 3rd tri and swear I got a buzz off of it. It was hilarious!

I also just ate sushi recently. But I went for the cooked stuff and not the raw.. Not the same, but it fulfilled the I want sushi mood.

  • I consider myself a rule follower, and that is what I selected.  That said, I pay attention to the rules that my doctor provided me.  I drink soda, so I get caffeine from that, but way less than 200 mg.  She said nothing about hot dogs, but I do have to limit the amount of Halibut I eat based on the size of the fish.  I do not eat uncooked sushi or unheated deli meat and I avoid Albacore tuna.

Interestingly, when my SIL was pregnant with her first, she told me she could only eat fruits and veggies grown in the US, nothing imported except bananas.  I eat whatever fruits and veggies I can get, even if that mango was grown in South America (I know, I'm such a rebel!)
