March 2014 Moms

Who else is breaking the rules?

I am really curious. Who else out there is doing/not doing things their OB/ midwife said they shouldn't/ should be doing?

I have a horse and my midwife said it is highly "recommended" that I don't ride because I "could" fall off. I have been riding most of my life and I just want to ride as long as I possibly can- it makes me so happy! Also, I am really bad at taking my prenatal vitamins I forget fairly often. I'm a naughty pregnant girl. But everything has been going so perfectly so far and I haven't been sick at all so most of the time it doesn't even seem like I'm pregnant. I don't want to sit around all day twiddling my thumbs.

Anyone else want to share their dirty little pregnant secrets?

Re: Who else is breaking the rules?

  • My best friend lives and works on a ranch and was dragging in calves at 8 months and went into labor on the back of a horse! You can fall off at anytime pregnant or not!

BUT I'm not drinking water...like at all. Before I got pregnant that's all I drank but now I can't stand it. My dr got onto me last month about. I think I've drank 3 glasses since then? Ugh

  • @bdunkin - Guilty! I also suck at drinking the recommended 8-10 glasses of water a day. I'm lucky to get half of that. Love your story about your friend! :)

  • Guilty here! I eat lunch meat. I crave sub sandwiches sometimes so I give in. I also don't excercise, at all. I eat feta cheese sometimes also, an have had a few glasses of wine. Only one at a time though. I think that covers it
  • I've eaten Brie 6 or 7 times. Actually, is love some on a bagel right now!

Yep. I try my hardest to drink water but I bet I only drink a bottle a day--if that. I hate water unless it's ICE cold, so I sip if straight from the fridge.
At my first OB appt they recommended changing diapers with gloves. Yea, whatever. I've never once changed my son's diapers with gloves on and don't intend on doing so now.

Eta: I also don't take my prenatal vitamin everyday. I either forget or feel too shitty to put anything in my mouth. I probably take it 5 times a week. Whatever, I try.

  • I have issues taking my prenatals everyday :( I try and MH nags me to take them but I still forget. Also, I have eaten lunch meat... I ate a tuna melt... And now I'm binging on giordanos stuffed pizza. Honestly, I'm just happy my appetite is back.

I'm so glad you said that!  I had a hard cider one night at 11 weeks (drank slowly, &  on a full stomach) & have felt so guilty about it - even though I've read a one is fine.  Glad I'm not the only one. :)

I've also done the cheese thing - mainly feta, sometimes without checking if it's pasteurized.

  • I have had a glass of wine here and there, I think 3 total ( all red) since I found out I was pregnant, but my Midwife says that after 15 weeks every once in awhile a glass of red is not a bad thing, I am having sushi this weekend, but will honestly probably stick to the cooked ones anyway.  I LOVE feta, Blue Cheese and Brie, and I eat about 2 subs a week, I do get them lightly toasted though.  I don't drink near enough water either :(

  • I don't drink nearly the amount of water that is recommended. Also, I rarely exercise... I'm just too tired!!
  • I think I've eaten almost every food on the not allowed list. And I scoop the cat litter because MH is a big whiny baby about it.

  • I asked my OB if I could drink chamomile tea. She said I should stay away from herbal tea since there's not much research on all the different kinds. Then I noticed my morning sickness tea (from babies r us) had chamomile in it! Pfft! I'll drink a cup of chamomile now and then without feeling guilty in that case! Everything in moderation.

I also still eat soft cheeses. OB said nearly all of it is pasteurized, just don't eat any from a farmer's market or crazy stuff from whole foods. Store bought and restaurants should be fine. So I eat it and love it!

    GREEN to PINK on 3.14.14
  • I was just wondering for those who don't drink enough water or water at all, if you get headaches? I feel like total shit if I don't drink enough to the point of now I'm drinking a gallon jug a day, yup I'm that pregnant girl carrying at jug around.

I probably don't even know all the exact rules. I'm careful and thoughtful and pregnant not dying.

Ive taken Ibuprofen a couple of times due to headaches. And I try to take my PNV because I need the iron, but sometimes I'm just too sick. And I workout hard, because it makes me feel amazing. My body won't let me go overboard, like I'll puke before I push it too hard and of corse I'm careful too.
  • I am awful at taking my PNV, I tried to be better in the beginning when the folic acid is more important - but it always make me feel sick, doesn't matter what kind of when I take it. I also eat deli meat, still enjoy coffee and all soft cheeses (but they're pasteurized, so it's NBD).

  • I like to eat raw cookie dough ,me and my H sometimes by the precut square package and at night have one or two pieces of it for an after dinner snack
  • I've broken a ton of rules.  I eat badly, I eat deli meat, I drink cider, I eat soft cheeses (although I have checked first to make sure these are all pasteurized prior to consuming).  I've had sips-JUST sips of alcoholic beverages. I haven't exercised at all. I've taken diflucan after my dr. told me not to (have a chronic yeast prob).  I take motrin.  I've taken pepto. There's one other thing that I'm not mentioning b/c I have no desire for internet stranger judgements.  All these and probably more...

  • On the not often occasion where we have steak.... I eat it medium rare! I don't like chewing for an extra 45 min and I like flavor. Otherwise I would eat beef jerky
  • Yaaaay to the rebels! @mcgife09 I have been getting mild headaches lately and I do down the water those days, so maybe I am better than I think? Idk. Also, @ bethclosen I'm totally guilty of eating some raw cookie dough here and there. It's just Sooo good!

  • I mostly eat whatever I want, and I've never restricted hot dogs or cheeses. I actually haven't been bad on any wine (though last night if I'd had a bottle in the house I would've- kids were killing me!) I did a 5k in my 1st tri, and I regularly pick up my 2 yo. It's just business as usual over here.

  • I'm pretty careful to follow the rules.  If anything went wrong, developmentally or any kind of birth defect I would blame myself and dwell on what I shouldn't have done or could have avoided.  After my previous losses, I know what it is like to wonder if there was anything I could have done to change things, and I just don't want to live with that.

Not all the rules are hooey and I just figure, it's only a few months.

But that being said, I make mistakes and sometimes don't have other options.  Like when the only choice is a deli sandwich or nothing.

    Anywho...

  • I've been pretty good but MAN I was just thinking about this same topic today! Prior to lunch I've only eaten deli meat once, and it was a that-or-nothing situation. a sandwich just sounded sooo good today though...and I had a turkey roller for lunch. It was delicious.

I've also never cut out hotdogs, summer sausage, or any of those things, not that I eat them very frequently anyway. I have been bad about diet, although it is *slightly* improving. It just seems like baby only wants junk food....spaghettio's, canned ravioli, pizza, mcdonalds....stuff that pre-preg I would only have maybe once a week. oh well...there must be something in those foods that my body needs!
