Target carts, yo.

When I am done shopping, I load DD in the car first, followed by shopping bags, then I lock the car while I run to put the cart away. It makes me wonder, is it wrong to walk away from your child to put your cart back? I always try to park close to the rack, but it isn't always possible. It makes me curious as to what you all do?

Re: Target carts, yo.

  • Not wrong at all! I park close to the rack, unload, then take the cart back with J, and carry him back to the car.

But if I had more than one kid or it was raining of something, I would do what you described.

Not putting your cart back at all would be wrong.

  • I always park as close as I can to the cart corral. I do what you do. Load everything and run the cart back. I guess I have a limit in my head for how far away is too far for my comfort.

  • Taking her with me to return the cart does make sense... But, my reaction when we get to the parking lot is to get her buckled in her car seat right away. I think it makes me more paranoid that someone could hit our cart while I load the car.

  • I put the cart beside the back door so it's unlikely to get hit, load my trunk, return the cart, then load the kid, unless it's raining. And when it's raining and the cart corral is too far away, I don't return the cart. In the words of Iconapop, I don't care.

I worry about that too- I usually park the cart next to my car so she isn't sticking out at all. She watches me put groceries in the trunk then I walk her in the cart to the corral- carry her back and buckle her in.
  • I've done it both ways - put her in first then returned the cart and taken her with me to return. For me I think it's based a lot on the temperature. If it's really hot in the car I feel bad making her wait in there for me to unload and return the cart.

  • This conversation sounds familiar. Wasn't this the topic of a UO at one point?
  • I wear him in the carrier, so I would probably just return the cart and then take him out of the carrier, but I can't think of a time I've ever used a cart with him. I always use a basket.

Yes! Lol it turned into a huge debate that you BETTA RETURN YO CARTS! I think of you guys every time I feel lazy, and then I return it.
  • If I've only had an impact on you @BatDaughter4Eva, it was all worth it.

  • We are freaks and shop as a family. If I go during the week, I just get a small amount of stuff that fits under the stroller.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I leave A. in the cart while unloading groceries, take the cart back and then put her in the car. I don't leave her unattended in the car, even if it is just for a minute. Because it then becomes acceptable, "oh, I'll just be a minute". Not a habit we want to get into.

I'm not sure how one goes from locking their car while they run the cart back to "oh I'll just be a minute" and doing something irresponsible. That is quite presumptious.

  • I put Luciano in his car seat, unload the groceries, lock the car, and return the cart. I have an unreasonable fear of the cart rolling away from me, like the stroller in ghostbusters. I don't run. I'm not quite sure what is going to happen to him in 30 seconds in a locked vehicle that doesn't leave my line of vision.

  • Me: load bags, load kid, leave her door open, return cart. Our stores are rarely so busy that I park more than 2 spots away from a cart corral.

Because then "Oh, I'll just be a minute" will eventually turn into us having sex with our husbands, having another child, and ::gasp:: getting stretch marks...which then leads to us ignoring our preshus firstborns. UNACCEPTABLE.

  • I was stating for US what we do and don't do. We do not want to get into the habit of it being acceptable in one situation and then making it acceptable for another. We bring her in to pay for gas too. It is simply because we do not want to get into a habit. Tis all.

Maybe get into the habit of not making your posts sound so pretentious. Just a suggestion.

  • It's so damned hot in AZ that I don't like to leave L in a closed car even for the time it takes to return the cart. I unload the groceries, return it to the carrel and then carry L back to the car.

  • Good lord....The question asked was what do you do.......so therefore I answered what we do. We choose to not leave her unattended in the car, we choose to bring her into the gas station with us because we don't want to get into any habit of it being acceptable to leave her unattended; whether it is to put the cart back, run in pay for gas, drop something off to a friend ect.

This is what I do. I put the cart in front of my car so that it won't get hit and someone can still park in my spot. I don't care...Jax can't get wet in the pouring rain and I don't feel comfortable leaving her in the car while I bring the cart back.

  • 98% of the time I strap them in first for my sanity after surviving a target trip with them. Sometimes I even buckle my kids in in my garage and run back inside to get all their crap for the day ready. It's like a freakin carnival cruise for me (Please tell me someone has seen that comedy sketch by Louis CK.)

Omg, not so much now, but I can totally relate from when DS was a newborn, those 3 seconds of feeling like I didn't have a baby to take care of...until I opened my door. DS was a big crier for the first few months of his life :(

  • I do different things different times. We have a van so sometimes I let the kids stand in the back while I load the groceries in the car. Sometimes they are both in the cart. Sometimes DD is in the cart and DS is standing next to it. Sometimes I open the sliding side doors and he gets in there but doesn't climb in his seat like I tell him to 20 times. Sometimes I put them in their seats after unloading, before putting the cart back. I may leave the doors open or close them, depending on the temperature. Sometimes I take one or both with me to return the cart. It all just depends on what works that day.

  • I strap in Liam and C gets in and gets buckled while I put away the groceries.  I also have a fear of kidnapping or car crashes while he's in there and I'm distracted.  I leave them both in the car for a total of 10 seconds while I put the cart back.  If its too far away, I'm sorry, but I leave it by my car.  I don't mind walking a few feet away, but not gonna cross the parking lot to put a cart back.  Its a cart placed back vs my kids.  I'm choosing my kids.  This post was very productive in annoying both the people who don't put their kids in the car right away and the people who always put carts back. ;)  lol!
