natural birth?

anyone planning to give birth without an epidural? I heard a lot of back pain stories that were associated with the shot. I am starting to think about natural delivery and was curious to hear your opinions and experiences.

thanks ladies!

  • Went med-free last time, plan to again.

  • I went med free with my son and plan to do the same again. Nothing is a definite though. I will do whatever I need to to get LO out safely.
  • (Med-free delivery, you mean?)

I'm doing planning on a med-free l&d, G-d willing. Been preparing for a few months, though.

I don't think I have to say what I immediately thought, do I?
Let's just say that was the second draft of my response.

  • I'm planning for a epi free delivery. Ideally I'd like to go med free, but they have other meds available that don't have to be put in your back if I need them. Talk to your OB about those options.
  • I am ok with some meds, but the shot and side effects are scary
  • There was that episode of Private Practice when Pete did an extraction with acupuncture. I want that.

  • I plan to go med free

The term natural birth implies that women who have medication or intervention have unnatural birth. It is insulting. I had a med free birth with my son and hope to have a med free and intervention free birth this time. Also @frankierokx according to the crazy pants May 14' poster it is surgical extraction.
Haha oh well, It is 1:30am
  • I'm team epidural, assuming all goes as planned.

  • The hopes are to go med-free, but I'm the case that LO or I need and kind of emergency intervention then that will happen. If for some reason my body isn't cooperating and I need pitocin or and epi or a csection then that's what will happen. Every birth is natural. No matter how that baby gets here as long as s/he gets here safe.
EDD for #2 is December 8th, 2013, so excited for our 2nd team green baby!

I hope for a 'surgical intervention'

    Enjoy your extraction!

I read this in a "Have fun storming the castle!" kind of tone. :)

  • I've been preparing to try med free. Hope it works out.
  • I'm hoping for Med-free, intervention free unless there's an emergency.
  • If it's a shortish (let's say less than 8hrs) first time labor, and feels like intense menstrual or intestinal cramps, I think I can do med-free. If it's the vomiting and urinating with each contraction type of pain, I think I'll go for the epi...

  • I'm planning for med-free but I will do whatever needs to be done for a safe delivery.
  • Yep, this will hopefully be my 3rd time med-free. But as always, I go in with an open mind. As long as baby gets out safely.

  • I want an epidural as soon as possible have had 3/3 and so far so good.
  • I am strongly considering a meds-free birth this time. I had an epidural last time and it didn't really help my back labor and left me unable to move into positions that would have helped me. So this time I'm leaning toward not going that route.

I'm having a surgical extraction on 12/16 @ 7:30 am :)  Please god let there be drugs involved.

  • Both previous births were meds free and planning the same with this one :)
  • Went epidural free but not med-free (ended up getting Stadol IV drugs) with DD. Going epi free was not by choice but I am actually going to try to go med-free this time, though I'm open to the Stadol again if needed. Planning to not even bother with the epi this time.

  • I'm going to try to go med free. But I'm a ftm so I'm going to see how it goes.
  • I'm starting to hope that maybe it's possible for me, haha.  I'm taking Bradley classes, & I'm still open to having an epidural if needed, but also starting to think more & more that maybe a med-free birth is do-able.  We'll see how it turns out!

  • My first was with an epidural. My second was unmedicated and my plan is for this one to be in medicated.

For a first time it will be somewhere inbetween. But plan on something more like 12-24 hrs of labor.
  • I'm going to attempt a med-free water birth at my hospital - they actually offer a birthing tub, which was pretty surprising to me! If I can't swing it, I'm okay with needing an epidural. Whatever gets my baby into my arms safely! I'll definitely be requesting no pitocin unless absolutely necessary this time though. That stuff was awful and put my baby into distress almost as soon as it was hooked up with my first labor.

PP who said they were "preparing" for a med-free birth... how does one do that? Other than taking natural birthing classes? I'm curious.

My first labor was 3.5 hours. Everyone is different.

  • That's the plan at least.  I didn't realize there were so many here open to the idea.
