Bedrest positioning question

This is the silliest question so I apologize in advance!

I am not officially on bedrest, but my cervix was down to 2.2 (while resting) and 1.9 (when bearing down) on Monday.  I am now on progesterone but my doctor will not put me on bedrest until I hit 1.

So when I am at home, I am making sure to spend the marority of the time laying down and sitting with my feet up.  My question is:  Is sitting down in a straight  back chair with my feet up as good as relieving pressure as laying down?  While you are on bedrest, is there a certain position that you are supposed to be in or supposed to be avoiding.

Thanks!

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!

Re: Bedrest positioning question

  • I've sort of been wondering the same thing. I've been on bedrest for 3 weeks for BP issues, but I mostly situp in bed because I'm still working and I can't really do my work laying down.

  • I have a similar question that perhaps belongs in this thread - I know I am not supposed to lie on my back, but if I am propped up a little, is that ok? And how propped up? I wake up catching myself on my back, too - like, how bad is this? (even my doctor said no more back sleeping).

  • The MFM had me sit no more upright than 45 degrees. However, he wanted me to sit up when eating and for a little bit afterwards to avoid getting heartburn. My bedrest was due to a shortened cervix.

Try to avoid lying flat on your back as it puts pressure on your vena cava (along your spine). If you have to lie on your back, elevate one side slightly or put two pillows vertically and put your spine between them.

  • Thanks for the advice of putting a pillow under one side of my back, I think that will work out perfectly. I hate side sleeping lately - I feel like baby A is way over to the left and A kicks when I sleep that way, like she's being squished.
