Rock n Plays?

I think we're going to use the rock n plays for bassinets (if we need them) and then just "transition" them into our livingroom as well when needed.  My question is why are they all different prices?  Is it just design dictates the price? Otherwise are they all pretty much the same?

Re: Rock n Plays?

  • I was wondering the same thing. I noticed that some have a vibrating mode and some have the plush insert as well.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've read to NOT get the cheap one (I think it's yellow). There's a hard plastic thing that the sling sits on, and it's been recalled for mold growing in between the plastic and the mesh. Also some moms have reported their babies getting a flat head from the original R & P, but I don't think it's been proven.

We are registering for the new version, the Snuggabunny one, or the monkey one that's the "deluxe" version that also vibrates.

Heard the same thing. The deluxe has extra padding behind the head. We have both (yellow was a gift and I bought the deluxe) ill just put a little blanket or something in the yellow and use it for traveling or in the playroom.

  • I just checked the Fisher Price site...apparently they make deluxe models that vibrate but also ones that don't. Very confusing. I just want the one with the most padding behind the head!

  • Anyone else planning on using it as a back-up bassinet?

We just don't want to spend $130 (x2) for the bassinet when the nursery is so close to our bedroom.

We are. I've heard they make perfect bassinet replacements, especially if your newborn has acid reflux.

  • I initially was looking into getting two also myself.  I asked my cousin what they use since they have twins also and they just use one pack n play for them both instead of two separate things, so I think we are going to do that also and plus I keep reading that they will sooth each other when they are so little still being together.
Of course once they start moving more, we will separate them more but still near one another.

Any if the pack n play doesn't work, I am sure we will buy one to see if that helps.

I am not getting a bassinet (shocking!). I am normally a very zen, go-with-the flow "it's all good" kinda girl, but can I just say that all this baby stuff everyone says I HAVE to have is making my inner minimalist have a complete freakout?

Our nursery is right next to the bedroom, and my friends said they had their daughter in the crib on day 1 and it worked out fine, so I'm sticking with that for now. If it turns out I'm totally crazy from lack of sleep, then I'll buy one later.

yup! I'm getting a pnp with bassinet inset and this...hopefully the baby likes one or the other for the first few weeks at least. I'll do napping in the crib hopefully so baby can get used to it.
  • I used a RnP for DD, and it was a great because she had acid reflux and was a terrible sleeper. I did have a hell of time transitioning her to a flat surface. The flat head issue can occur from any surface that your child lays on and is in for too long or does not rotate the head.  That is why tummy time is important. It is not cause by the RnP, it is caused by leaving a child in one position for too long.  Extra padding is not good for the child either, same reason you should get a firm crib mattress over a padded one.

That being said, I loved using the RnP, I will keep it for naps, but will they now have a bassinet version that has more space and is flat, I am getting that for the night, to avoid the flat surface transition. A vibrating one does sound enticing.

I'm using one as a bassinet. We don't have a lot of extra space so I like that it's small and will fold up when it's not being used. And if the baby likes sleeping in it, I won't have as much trouble getting him/her to nap when we travel (hopefully). I'm getting the one that vibrates, and not getting a vibrating bouncer. I'd like to skip the swing also, but DH thinks it will be necessary. :-/
I registered for a swing that the seat comes off and is a bouncer...so that option is there.
  • My kids always hated the vibration setting and/or it would make them puke, so I am skipping anything with vibration this time around :) Going plush with no action!

  • Definitely get the plush version. The vibrating feature is new since DD was born just a year ago, but it couldn't hurt to have it--you can always turn it off if they don't like it, but bonus if they do. We used the heck out of ours with DD...but she never really slept in it other than a few naps in her first few days. It was her "seat" though and where she sat to play in the living room, in the bathroom when I was getting ready, next to the table while we ate. You name it--we put it there. And so great to travel with, even if just over to visit friends. It was our favorite gear and I was very sad when she outgrew it!

  • We'll be getting one as our bassinet too. We'll also have the pack n'play as a backup. It's looking more and more like we're going to wait on the crib in favor of these more mobile options in the beginning.

  • We're also getting two RnP's for the twins and plan to use them as bassinets if they sleep in them. I wanted something I could rock with my foot while nursing the other if I can't tandem feed. If they don't sleep in them at night we will use a pack n play in our room like we did for DS.
