January 2014 Moms

Hello from India!

I know this is a late introduction but i just discovered The Bump and have spent the past week lurking around. Finally decided to step in and say hi, so HI! I am a 28 year old FTM, due on 7th Jan'14 from New Delhi, India and very excited to be here! My husband and I are both dentists running a private practice in Delhi.

I realise that the time difference between India and USA will make it difficult for me but I am going to try and participate as actively as I can. Although the healthcare systems of our countries are very different but pregnant women are the same everywhere! A couple of things that have made me jealous of you guys are 1) Your medical insurance - ours does not cover ANY expense during pregnancy. We pay for all our OB/GYN visits, ultrasounds, hospital stay, delivery etc.
2) If you wish to, you can find out the sex of your LO. Sex determination is ILLEGAL in India!

Looking forward to interacting with everyone here. So happy to be here :-)
P.S.- Please excuse my spelling/grammatical errors. I try hard but English is not my first language!

  • welcome to the board and congrats on you baby.  There are several people here living in other countries and time zones so you should be able to fit in just fine.

  • Welcome! That's crazy that it's actually illegal to find out the gender in your country!

Its very sad actually.. Female feticide is a huge problem especially in rural North India. Male children are preferred as people feel that a girl child is a burden on her parents-feed her, educate her only to marry her off. The govt had to ban sex determination to prevent this.. Mindsets are changing but it will be a long long time before the birth of a girl will be celebrated with as much joy and happiness as that of a boy.
I could go on and on about this but will stop here because it gets me very worked up!

Wow! Thank you! That may have made my day. English is our medium of study in schools and colleges but its a very Indianised version. I get to practise a lot though.. A lot of our patients are expats and tourists from USA and UK.

  • Welcome and Congrats!  We do have a mom here whose husband is from India, I believe she had her wedding there too.  I'm sure she'll chime in soon.  She did mention that when they found out the sex of their baby her in laws told them NOT to tell anyone else in his family because it's so highly looked down upon to find out.  I think that's so sad.

It makes me very sad too. Although this ban on fetal sex determination is tough on me,I am all for it if it can help prevent this archaic practise..

Thank you! I am enjoying my pregnancy for the most part-especially all the extra attention from my husband, parents and in laws.
Region wise I am from North India- parents were born in Punjab and moved to Delhi. Religion wise you could say I am Hindu. Dont visit the temple or pray etc but we do celebrate our festivals and got married according to Hindu Sanatan Dharma..
Will be happy to answer any questions you have! And yes, Indian weddings are so much fun! We had a blast at ours. Three days of singing, dancing and partying!!
    :)

Congratulations, and welcome to the board!  My husband is Indian, and I've gotten to travel to India several times, and we even had our wedding there.  Most of my time has been spent in Bangalore where my husband's parents live, but I've also been able to visit Mangalore, Chennai, Agra, and New Delhi once.  India is an incredible country - I really look forward to hearing your stories of what pregnancy is like there!

Omg! I spent 8 years in Mangalore for my studies.. Bangalore is a great place as well but I have a major soft spot for Mangalore since that is where I met my husband
    :D
Looking forward to swapping stories with everyone here..

  • Welcome and congratulations! When I was growing up, my best friend and her family were from India. Unfortunately, I lost track of her when we were in college, but I've always been fascinated by Indian culture and hope to visit one day.  If you could suggest one writer or book to Americans that you feel gives the best view of India, what would you suggest?

Thank you for the welcome! The book question is a tough one though.. A must read according to me is City of Djinns by William Dalrymple-simple language and captures the essence of India. Kim by Rudyard Kipling is a classic and a personal favorite. A Million Mutinies Now by V.S.Naipul is another great book but quite factual and can get boring!

Shantaram and Eat.Pray.Love are "popular" but i wouldnt recommend them if you really want to know and learn more about India.. Hope you enjoy these books.. Happy to help!

Can't wait to get to know you better!

Yeah. I was back there in 2008. I wish there was dentists up there when I had been in school. I'd get my teth worked on and cleaned when I went back to States during holidays.

I'm Indian and it all depends on the family. It's really depends in how modern they are or not
We are having a girl and my family back in India are so excited. They couldn't care less what's the gender and the word is spreading.
  • Welcome! And I'm so glad you're here; I'm American but living overseas in SE Asia, so we're not too many time zones apart, actually. I visited India several years ago, not for very long and only got to Delhi and Agra (of course!) but I really enjoyed it. And DH and I LOVE Indian food!  DH is English so curries are practically their national dish and he makes it for us once a week. My favorite is butter chicken.  :)  Your English is impeccable so don't be shy about it. Congratulations and welcome again!
