I don't mean to go off on a tangent, y'all, but this whole thread has been annoying me all morning... I'm usually all for personal liberties and am not fond of others regulating my own medical decisions but...YOU WORK IN A HOSPITAL! I absolutely think it's absolutely fair for your employer to require flu vaccines! When it comes down to the flu vaccine in your specific environment, your choices and your health affects everyone around you! Not to mention your baby! Get the vaccine and be glad others around you are required to get it too!
When I had my first child, I was mid pregnancy when the whole Swine Flu (H1N1) was going on, it was in the news and they came out with the vaccine where the elderly and pregnant women got first dibs. There had been a few cases in my area of people who got it. So the birthing center I delivered at put a temporary limit on visitors. I had to put 4 names down on a paper (other than DH) of people I wanted to visit me while I was there, anyone else was denied access. And before they passed the front desk they were asked if they've had symptoms in the last 7 days.
I did get the shot and I was really glad I did. Baby was healthy and fine, and neither of us had any problems with any type of Flu.
My next appointment is Oct 8 and I will be almost 15 weeks -- I will get it then. Or if DD's pediatrician has their flu shot clinic before then, I'll probably just get mine there with her. But, yes, I'd rather have it after 13 weeks.
Wow. Way to welcome the new girl to the birth club. Bit vicious, aren't you?
I would give you a hand and add the link to the study that was included in the article which, by your reaction, I presume you didn't even bother to open when you saw it was from thehealthyhomeeconomist.com, but evidently you have to pay to read it. I can't afford to pay $32 to read the study, which is why I'm fine with the information in the article from the study. You can agree with that or not, it's not going to change my opinion of not getting a flu vaccine. I still don't think the risks are worth the rewards, given that I can't even recall the last time I had the flu.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to find somewhere a bit more friendly to try to get my feet wet on this site. If my reception here is any indicator, that may be tougher than I thought.

I'm all for vaccination and I think the flu shot is safe (and very important) during pregnancy. However, reviews by groups like the cochrane collaborative don't really support the idea that vaccinating hospital staff protects patients.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!

but it is not a valid study it is based on antidotal evidence. Chalk it up to a lesson learned and educate yourself on how to find real research based studies. You will have a lot more decisions to make as a mother and there is a lot of propaganda out there from every side. If you really want to make the best choices for you and your baby then educated yourself.
BTW this is one of the least snarky boards on the bump you might wasn't to try baby gaga instead.

I think most of us are just shocked and concerned that moms are basing very important decisions on anecdotal studies. There were some other more accurate links posted in this thread. Probably would be worth a read...
I tried like 3 times to get the flu vaccine when I was pregnant last year. First, work wouldn't give it to me. The thing I had to sign specifically said they wouldn't give it if you were pregnant. So I went to my doctor, who wouldn't give it to me because I had come in for another issue that involved an infection and she put me on antibiotics, said come back when you're done with the antibiotics. Then my OBs office wdoesn't carry it. So, by the time I ran through all of those, I was tired, the worst of flu season was over and the copays were seriously adding up with all the doctor visits I had.
I am definitely getting it this year, I have tiny kids to worry about giving it to, and I already gave my first whooping cough when he was 2 mos old. Let me tell you how much that one sucked! It was only because we were watching him carefully for symptoms because I had gotten so sick so quickly, and brought him into the doctor's right away, that he didn't have to be hospitalized.
TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!
@Serenla Really? Awesome! I get super nerd-pumped when ladies on here are familiar with comic book characters Rogue is my very fave.
Mmmm thread hijack! @rogue237 she isn't my fave member of the xmen and I prefer post 2000s rogue but she is my 2nd fave member of the team. Gambit is my first so it's win-win eh? I get nerd excited too

I would hardly call any of the responses to your study "vicious." You have to realize that when you make a dramatic blanket statement like "the H1N1 vaccine causes miscarriages," women here are going to want you to back up your assertions with a study (or, better yet, multiple studies) based on ACTUAL evidence - not anecdotal data. Also, I would never trust a secondary source reporting on a study if I can't read the full study myself. Have you even read the follow up study another poster mentioned?
Thoughtful research is not just stumbling upon one random article and taking it at face value because it happens to support your own opinion. If that's how you choose to make your decisions, awesome, but don't go citing anecdotal evidence as truth on a public message board -- it doesn't help anyone out nor does it lend much credibility to anything else you claim in the future.

@Serenla - oh now you're just asking for a bump crush. Rogue and Gambit are my favorites. I'm a 90s X-Men fan, but I still read it today - post-2000 Rogue-led X-Men Legacy has been one of the best rendetions of her character. I'm still holding out hope for Romy though...
@rogue217 I PPH you and hey the 90s were a good time. I'm not reading anything from that time now, I am actually catching up on TWD but I am planning on continuing Astonishing by Joss Whedon after that.

Having the flu (fever for more than 1 day) while pregnant has been linked to Autism. The flu vaccine has been shown to be extremely beneficial to your health as well as the baby. If you get vaccinated while pregnant, it will protects the baby for months after birth. I am planning on getting mine pronto. It is completely safe and will protect your baby. It's something you really shouldn't skip. Talk to your OB about it.

@serenla - TWD is great! May I also suggest Saga from Image and Irredeemable by Mark Waid (Boom! Studios) if you're looking for anything new!
Full disclosure: I love the Avengers and I love Captain America. But Batman could whoop them too.
@maelic - while Batman is awesome, he's just a dude. Any member of the Avengers alone could take him down. The Hulk (who I don't care for) could kill him with a sneeze! lol
@maelic lol if we are doing superheroes without natural powers I have two words, Nick Fury the infinity formula doesn't count as a superpower in my book. Now that is a fight I'd like to see.

When I asked my dr about when to get one yesterday at my appt I never got a clear answer of whether I could get on today from work or wait till 2nd tri. I opted to get it today at 10w rather then wait another couple of weeks since there's something going around the community

Is this coming from one of those mysterious medical studies that only EMTs have access to?
You guys trust doctors too much and their bullshit studies. I will NOT be getting a flu shot. Read the CDC website on what's really in those shots. No thanks.

OP I would love to hear why you are so against the flu shot? I get it even when I'm not pg. Knock on wood I've never had the flu.
@rogue237 I will get it whenever my OB recommends it. I am going for my nurse intake tomorrow so I'll ask then.
