Re: "Flu shot increases miscarriage by 700%!"

• First off, the article says only the H1N1 flu shot is the culprit (which most shots nowadays do include), however the source on this study doesn't seem very reliable.

This seems like something that would have been published in multiple places with noteworthy sources if it were legitimate. I don't buy it.

• This is total rubbish!
• I actually have heard this before too!

• It wasn't from a website. It was during the whole H1N1 scare. I don't remember. I read something about it. Maybe midwives office?

I work in the medical field and their are not factual studies that have been done to prove this. Getting the flu shot, for when we are do is a great choice. Not only is it saving is the trouble of getting it, the baby gets the benefits from it as well since all of us will be delivering during flu season. Do not believe anything that doesn't have KNOWN medical knowledge and studies behind it..

Sorry for typos. I'm on my mobile.
• I think everyone should do what they are comfortable with.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
• Fortunately, I give credit to the human race and don't think most people are ignorant enough to believe this. Obviously if you're not comfortable getting the flu shot, then don't. You'll just be a lot more uncomfortable with the flu while you're pregnant or caring for a newborn.

• Then WHY do almost 1200% of OBGYNs recommend them to their patients??

• #1 Healthy People Need To Get Sick Once In Awhile

Because vaccines cripple our immune systems response... She uses scattered thoughts to "prove" this, including saying fevers help fight infections (true), which clearly means we NEED fevers and need our immune systems to respond for them to work. Umm, no. A perfect immune system fights it off before you get sick. And vaccines allow our immune system to work so it's not like you're letting your immune system slack off.

#2 How Vaccines Work Explains Why They Don’t (Really) Work
Basically blames vaccines for cancer. I wish I knew enough about immunology to explain in little words why this is dumb, but I don't.

#3 The Flu Shot May Be More Dangerous Than The Flu

He links the flu to miscarriage and Alzheimer's... Even though the flu shot hasn't been around long enough to follow someone for their lifetime and see that it increases the risk. And correlation versus causation, yo. Another researcher anxious to prove something will say that increase in Alzheimer's is due to cell phones.
As far as miscarriages... The article says that the CDC doesn't care about facts and says that women vaccinated were three times as likely to get the flu and miscarriage increased by 700%. But they don't have a link to any study or proof of their numbers.

I can say that the CDC ignores the fact that horses make people 500% happier and that people with horses are 60% less likely to have a heart attack and are 70% more likely to love the color green and so ponies should be provided to ALL! That doesn't make it a fact. Calling it a fact and having stats doesn't make it true.

My son just woke up so I can't finish analyzing this now.

I don't know how anyone could think this was legit.

That's right, more OBGYNs than actually exist... That's how many are recommending them!

Maybe we should start using ridiculous percentages. It's fun!

Is anyone here worked up?

I admit I was worked up over the thought of dead kids yesterday. Dead children upset me over the Internet or in real life.

Okay, 700% increase can be a valid statistic.

If you give your kid a dollar a week in allowance, and then increase it to seven dollars a week, that's a 700% increase.

I am not sure how to calculate the increase in this case. I'm not sure it can increase 700% without meaning every women would miscarry.

It's a bogus statistic because the absolute number of miscarriages could be small and the range is wide.

Even if the percentage has a legitimate source, the article doesn't give the "N's," just the inflammatory percentage. Was this some half-assed chart review of 15 women? In that case, a variation of a few incidences of miscarriage, which could be well within normal range, could yield a 700% increase in risk. But it's bogus when applied to real life.
No, I get that part. I'm just saying that 700% increase alone isn't bogus. In this case, yes.

I can say anything increases by any amount and it doesn't make it legit. I'd need to see hard research numbers, which don't exist here.

Well there's no "N" number or any real data because it's a blog, not a real, published, verified article. no studies done, just someone spreading misinformation on the Internet.

• First of all, I wouldn't believe everything you read. I would talk to your OBGYN first. Mine highly recommends flu shots because getting the flu while pregnant can actually be more dangerous for you and the baby. I had one last year while pregnant and as you can see in my tickers that I have a healthy boy and he is doing great. I will also have one this year as I've already been sick with colds and nasty sinus infections and really don't want to get sick with the flu. I don't think so many doctors would recommend the flu shot if it was really this high of a risk.

• My first reaction was, "Oh For F--k Sake!" Why would anyone take a blog seriously that does not link to scientific studies or reliable sources??

And then books gets called catty?? Is this the Twilight Zone?

Being pregnant can be stressful enough. OP please don't be offended. But these crack pot blog posts using scare tactics rather than stone cold facts to make any kind of important decision don't serve any positive benefit other than to reaffirm why we need real unbiased scientific data. If you're really concerned, talk to various doctors. I had a miscarriage and I do not attribute it to the flu shot; there was some sort of abnormality and that was my body's way of letting go of an unviable pregnancy. It's actually pretty offensive to try and blame a mother's actions of getting a flu shot when the pregnancy isn't viable.

*Rondack, I heart your thoroughness on debunking this crap.

• Well it looks like BS but I have to get the flu shot. I take immunosuppressants and it would be very bad if I got the flu...especially while pregnant.

Also I would like to note that even ignoring all medical facts (which is dumb anyway), if my injectable medication that kills my immune system and the cat-D oral med I take are considered "safe," I find it hard to believe that a shot that 90-year olds take religiously isn't....just saying...

ETA: sorry, I was just sitting here stewing about this..

• You're also the peach that "warned" us about Reglan too. :sigh:

Word of advice and I promise I am conveying this is a very sweet and understanding tone. You know that State Farm commercial "they can't put anything that isn't true on the internet" one? Well that is a lie and the whole point of the commercial...

Research does not mean pick any article and believe it. The articles you read are reliable sources ONLY if they are sited by medical professionals.

Like for instance if you want medical advice from the internet, Mayo Clinic, is a very reputable site as were a mom blog is not.

You siggy says you have 3 DDs, and I hope you do not base their care off mom blogs and the internet. Sometimes you have to stop, think about it, then post. Otherwise you are going to end up getting flamed pretty bad if you keep making post like this.

Please research and don't believe the first thing you read.
I do my research from different sources not just random blogs, all I wanted is honest opinions from you mamas. No offense...
