The third link is more valid; however, is does not change the fact that many of us can NOT breast feed!
Formula is nutritious. Does it have the antibodies that breast milk has? No! But it's not junk OR poison.
Infant formula warning: The poisoning of infants with formula products, and why breastfeeding is best
Over the years, countless studies have shown that when it comes to infant nutrition, breast milk is best. This fact remains true, as there is simply no infant formula product on the market that can match the superior nutrition of mother's milk. In fact, some infant formulas actually contain ingredients that can be harmful to your baby.
Although some formula recipes have improved over time for mothers who must rely on formula to feed their new baby, many products are still loaded with unhealthy and even dangerous ingredients, making breastfeeding the best way to go for new mothers who have the option.
In Massachusetts, public health authorities have taken steps to encourage breastfeeding by restricting the marketing of baby formula in the state's hospital maternity wards.
In many hospitals across the country, new mothers are given complimentary gift baskets during their stay that often contain free samples of infant formula, supplied by formula companies. This is a practice Massachusetts health authorities see as a clever marketing trick, since it implies that the hospital's healthcare providers, in giving new mothers this gift, endorse the use of formula.
To combat the practice, the state has decided that while free formula may be made available to mothers who need it, it will no longer be added to gift baskets for all new mothers. The restrictions are part of a larger state initiative to educate women about the benefits of breastfeeding, reports The Boston Globe.
So, what are some of those benefits? For starters, there is the special infant-mother bond forged through breastfeeding that may not be achieved when a child is fed formula, but, beyond that, there are important health reasons why breast milk is best.
Infants are designed to drink their mother's milk. They are not meant to have cow's milk or anything other than their mother's milk in their early lives. Only breast milk contains the nutrients a healthy baby needs, including 160 fatty acids that are not found in baby formula.
The nutrition a child is given at infancy makes a lasting impression, too. Research shows babies who are breastfed have lower incidences, later in life, of chronic diseases like asthma, diabetes and even cancer, as well as a reduced risk for severe communicable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea and ear infections.
A mother's own health can benefit from breastfeeding her child, as well. In addition to having a happy and healthy baby, moms who breastfeed often have less bleeding after the birth, lose their pregnancy weight faster and experience better bone strength, with fewer hip fractures later in life. They may also have reduced risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
Although there is some concern that breast milk itself has become contaminated in our modern world, it is still the superior choice, according to research. An analysis of breastfeeding conducted by the Environmental Working Group shows that chemicals like PCBs and PBDEs that accumulate in a woman's body fat are often found in trace amounts in breast milk, since breast milk is made up of fat from a mother's body. However, the levels of chemicals typically found in breast milk pose less of a threat than the risks associated with feeding a new baby formula.
That's because, as mentioned earlier, babies are not designed to drink formula or juice or any other liquids besides mom's milk when they are born, and if they do, poor health consequences can result.
Have you ever looked at the ingredients label on a container of baby formula? Oftentimes, there are things in there that we, as adults, shouldn't even be eating -- hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup and cow's milk, just to name a few. These are ingredients that promote chronic disease, and yet we are feeding them to our very youngest consumers, who have no say in the matter.
Of particular concern in formula is the ingredient manganese, a neurotoxic chemical found in much higher concentrations in baby formula, particularly soy-based formulas, than in breast milk. According to the EWG, soy-based formulas contain about 80 times as much manganese as mother's milk, while animal-based formulas contain about 30 times more. Elevated manganese levels have been linked to behavioral problems, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) later in life. Babies are not able to absorb and excrete excess manganese during the first year of life, according to the EWG.
Besides the harmful ingredients we know are in baby formula, there are other, less certain risk factors involved with formula feeding, as well.
For example, chemical and bacterial contaminants can come into play when bottle feeding infants. Mixing powdered infant formula with water from the tap, or even bottled drinking water, can open the door to numerous water contaminants, including chlorine byproducts, pesticides, lead, solvents, arsenic or nitrates from fertilizer runoff. Similar contaminants may also be found on bottles, nipples or even in the formula itself.
Some formulas may contain excessive levels of metals like aluminum, cadmium, lead or worse. The Natural Resources Defense Council reports the following: "In the past, (baby formula) recalls have been ordered because of contamination with substances such as broken glass, fragments of metal and salmonella and other bacteria. The fungal toxin aflatoxin has also been detected in some commercial formulas. Although detected levels were very low, this toxin is known to cause cancer and is not present in breast milk."
Infant formula is so unhealthy for babies, the Natural Resources Defense Council directly blames aggressive marketing of infant formula in underdeveloped countries for "an epidemic of infant death from malnutrition and diarrheal illness, a result of the contaminated water used to dilute or reconstitute formula."
The formula industry is an $8 billion a year business, but the price of using infant formula in place of breast milk may reach much higher than that, as it may mean harming young and innocent lives.
Many mothers are choosing not to breastfeed, simply because they see formula as a more convenient option. But are you really willing to sacrifice the health of your new baby for the sake of convenience?
If you are medically unable to breastfeed for any reason, do your homework and find a formula you can trust to be the next best thing for your baby. If you can breastfeed, do. Not only will it forge a special connection between you and your child, but the natural choice is also the best choice for you and your baby's health.
lol at quoting Natural News. Their main page has something called 10 outrageous facts the CDC doesn't want you to know about vaccines. *eyeroll* Are you anti vax too?
And no one is arguing that breast is best. We're just saying you don't have to be a complete asshole to people who don't BF.
Why DO we toss around that "Breast is" Best phrase anyway? I mean, what with the science and all, I guess it's best for people who like and have no trouble with BFing. I have no trouble BFing DS. That's cool, whatever. But I didn't make it past 3 months with DD1 because of a sudden and severe infection the antibiotics for which were so strong I couldn't breastfeed for the span of two weeks. I didn't respond to the pump. I dried up like an old well.
In DD1's case I would say that formula was best.
Or sometimes I just want to go out and be a grown up, have a few drinks, whatever. I don't have an oversupply so the babysitter has to use formula. I would argue that at those times, formula is best for my hungry kid.
Breast is best for breastfed kids, formula is best for formula fed kids.
I'm not, you know, stirring the pot again. Just tossing that out there.
It was formula, not poison. Would you prefer they starve your child?
I think you're overreacting a bit. I agree with the other poster. Possibly look into leaving extra milk just in case.
Agree. Formula is always a better idea than letting your kid go hungry. I think you are being unreasonable. Your kid won't die if she has a couple bottles of formula to get her over the hump after an obvious accident.
I understand that BF and breast milk are really important to you. However, one thing you will have to make your peace with as a parent is that life doesn't always work out the way you a) planned b) hoped c)want. You can do your best but flexibility & choosing your battles wisely are key.
This is not something to go to the deuce over or switch providers over IMHO. A one time occurrence I would let slide. Now, I would re-evaluate different arrangements if it became a repeat situation because something is going on there with epitude or observing your wishes. I say 3 strikes and switch.
I think you are being super melodramatic with your bitch-fit thread btw.
And yes I did contact the center today. My daughter has and will not be returning and I've reported them to the health department. I'm hoping they will be under investigation and lose their licensing. Also for those critizing my choice for daycare, she only went for 3 weeks and will no longer be attending.
Wait a minute. Your daughter is out of daycare altogether now? Did you quit your job over this?!?
I'm going to call out the pink elephant in the room here...and say as intelligent you seem to think you are, you are really clueless. Formula does not harm babies...it is not equal to the cat piss you refer it to. There are many moms who cannot breastfeed. Yes, I agree, they should have called you to find out what to do...but you obviously knew you were overreacting when posting this thread. Sheesh.
Edit: I just noticed there are four pages and I only saw the one. Therefore, I did not name the pink elephant. 40 other people did. Sorry.
Guess someone besides the Bump now thinks you are over-reacting and needing insight.
OP, in a serious, non snarky way, please for the love of god realize that there are several FFers out there whose heart was broken over not BFing. Not that you give a shit. We were just too lazy right? Not this one. I have not 1 but 2 actual, physical BFing handicaps including hypoplasia. If you would have said anything like this to me IRL, you would have gotten a hormonal ugly cry wherever we were. That's not an assumption. You want to know how bad this old lady felt at subway for warning me about not getting onions? Yeah. She felt pretty assish. You should too.
And yes I did contact the center today. My daughter has and will not be returning and I've reported them to the health department. I'm hoping they will be under investigation and lose their licensing. Also for those critizing my choice for daycare, she only went for 3 weeks and will no longer be attending.
Wow, you're kind of a psycho, aren't you? You would like to ruin peoples lives because they fed your child? Get over it lady. Mistake on their part, yes. Did they just sentence your child to a horrible future filled with devastating health problems? Absolutely not.
I did everything in my power to breast feed. I pumped a dozen times a day, I took supplements, drank the tea, ate the cookies, took the medication. After 6 weeks straight of all of that I still was only producing an oz a day.
I'd like to know just exactly what you would have done in my situation? Let your baby starve? Begged another BF mom to let my child latch on when theirs was done? Get over yourself you sanctimonious bitch. I didn't poison my child, he is not suffering. He is thriving, he is healthy, and he is happy. Do I think FF is better than BF (or does any other poster on this site)? Absolutely not. But feeding my child formula is not even remotely close to being the same as filling his bottle with Pepsi. We do the best we can for our children, and for many of us, that means FF.
I am also on the boat of hoping your milk dries up as karmic retribution for you being a complete and utter ass-hat.
This post was about my experience with daycare not about any of you and your choice to ff. If you feel bad then maybe you know the decision you have made isn't the best one.
Our 6yo was formula fed. He skipped Kindergarten and passed first grade above every level. He plays the piano & trumpet and moved up a league in baseball early too. He's brilliant! And sensitive and social and active and healthy! Imagine if my struggle with breast feeding had played out differently! He'd probably be starting high school! Lol
Listen, lady, when you line them all up on graduation day, you can't tell how they entered this world, what they drank for the first year of life, weather they wore cloth or disposable diapers, if they co-slept, were vaccinate or had a pet goat. So enough with judging and good luck living up to the standards you've set for yourself and everyone around you. So your baby had some formula, now that she's "ruined" are you going to give her up? If you're this upset about some formula, what happens when she gets a B on her first math test or trades her organic yogurt for a snack pack?
This post was about my experience with daycare not about any of you and your choice to ff. If you feel bad then maybe you know the decision you have made isn't the best one.

Still waiting on actual peer reviewed medical studies from legitimate sources that say formula is poison. In the mean time, I'm going to poison myself with a Diet Dr Pepper, which is clearly superior to Pepsi, and almost as good as Coke. I might need lifetime supply, this could be a while. I'm also surprised not to see a GBCB.
Crazycakes, I hope you do call the Health Department, I'm sure they haven't had a decent laugh in a while. You might make their Friday the 13th. I still think you're here to start shit, you weren't lurking because you felt you might be attacked. Why else would you post in Aug 2011 in a random thread to say "This board is such a snooze". Or this, you're a real gem:
momhasamigraine:
Meegs10.13.06:
Wow, it looks like I missed an interesting afternoon!
Why are you even on this board?
Besides the fact that the members of this board are not exclusive and welcome anyone who supports the LGBT community regardless of their orientation...you do know what ALL of the letters in the board's name stand for, no?
I can understand you being upset that they spilled/wasted your BM and that they made a feeding decision without even consulting you.
But calling formula "artificial substandard junk?" That's freaking ridiculous. Formula provides babies with the nutrition they need, and some mothers have no alternative if they have major issues breastfeeding. You are implying that women who formula feed don't care about their babies and serve them junk. Get a reality check.
Dahlia, I am flexible on some things but this is one issue where I have zero flexibility. I am not for formula feeding in any way, shape or form for my child. This isn't a simple oops like they missed a snap on her onesie, this is my child's health that is at stake here. We want to instill healthy eating habits and to start her on something unnatural at this young of an age is disastrous. I can't just step back and let whatever happen.
Formula is not unhealthy. It is food. Your child's health is just fine.
I think it's not right that they gave your daughter formula without your consent and I'd probably talk to the director about that seeing as you said you told them not to. They definitely should have called you and let you decide how to handle it.
Although- I have to say.... I don't think giving a bottle of similac is like giving a baby a Pepsi! I think your hatred of formula is a little over the top but to each their own. Not trying to start something but formula is not the devil you're making it out to be, and it's kind of rude to call it 'substandard junk'.
Formula is substandard and highly inadequate when compared to mother's milk. And as far as referring to it as junk, I do consider it as all other processed food to be in the junk food category. The fact that I'm taking the time, consideration and effort when it comes to feeding my child just to have daycare undo all of that is not over the top at all.
So people who have to formula feed are not taking time and effort with their babies? You ar
I didn't start this post to bash formula. I have to say formula is not the "only option" there is the choice of donor milk. I stand behind what I have said, in our family formula is not an option. Also I'm not just going to get over it or move on.
You do realize donor milk that has been properly screened is very hard to get and usually only given to preemies in the hospital? And I'll be damned if I would give my child unscreened breastmilk and risk him contracting a disease. Formula feeding is a hell of a lot safer in that case.
I ff both of my kids, and they're both healthy and ahead. I think you are being WAY too dramatic, seriously. I hope this is MUD, because otherwise I'm losing more and more faith in humanity.
Eta I don't usually name call, but you ma'am, are a douche.

So what if something happens, like you get sick, and your supply tanks. Are you going to starve your baby?
Yes the daycare should have contacted you to see how you wanted to handle it, but they did NOT give your baby poison. They fed her.
I'll be honest, I only read the first page of comments bc my eyes hurt too much to continue. But yeah, it's women like you that make this world an ugly disgusting place. I hope to come across you and your EBF child in 30 years and I'm certain my exclusively substandard junk fed child will be healthier and more successful than yours without a doubt.
And if this is MUD, kudos to you for attracting so much attention!!
I realize this post has a life of its own already, but I can't not reply. (Disclaimer: I did not read past the first several replies so sorry if I missed any critical details.)
They should have called you before introducing formula. I agree with that 100%. If this is a dealbreaker for you, then you should find a new provider. But, if you've otherwise been happy with them, you and your child would probably be better served by trying to resolve this issue with them before starting over somewhere new.
I believe everyone has the right to their beliefs about what to feed their child, but I find your comments about formula to be closed minded at best and ignorant and offensive at worst. Formula is the only option some people have and they are not poisoning their child. Give me a break.
I seriously fucking hope the Health Dept. calls you to let you know that you are a FUCKING PSYCHO.
Also, what a SELFISH BITCH you are that you would take donor milk from babies that REALLY need it, like preemies and sick babies. You make me want to throw up my lunch.

You hope they close and other families lose their daycare? Un-f'ing-believable. You're the worst person I've ever seen on TB.
I personally do not see any reason why my child should have formula, if necessary I would seek the option of donor milk. There is also no reason why my dd should have gone 6 hours w/o eating, they could've called and we would've brought her milk from my stash. I am not trying to make anyone feel guilty, but I'm not going to feel guilty for wanting the best for my child either.
I think this entire situation is your fault anyway. You should always send more than your child may need jut in case something like this happens. Your claiming to want the best, and all this but you can't even provide your day care center with the things they need to do their job properly should an accident occur.
My DD was exclusively formula fed and according to her pedi she's got the intelligence and advanced speech like a four year old. She hit all milestones early and developementally is way beyond her short two years.
Ill keep feeding my daughter "substandard processed junk" it did wonders for her and of I have issues bfing my son whose due in nov, like I did my DD you can be damn sure ill put some good start in his bottle and not think twice. I'd much rather my kid have formula, than not eat for 6+ hours because I'm a dumbass who didn't send enough milk, just in case.
Get off your fucking high horse.

Friday afternoon and I'm bored so I've now gone back and read most of the replies to this post. I just want to give out a universal "Love It" to all you ladies! (Not you, OP - I just want to give you a giant middle finger.)
I didn't start this post to bash formula. I have to say formula is not the "only option" there is the choice of donor milk. I stand behind what I have said, in our family formula is not an option. Also I'm not just going to get over it or move on.
I would take your baby to the hospital and have their stomach pumped to rid them of the poison.
We had a nurse who thought JUST LIKE YOU! The first 48 hours we were at the hospital, we were assigned a very pro-breast feeding, anti-formula feeding nurse. Which was great, because hey, Breast is best, right? Even when your 8lb 12 oz child drops to below 25% of her birthweight in 48 hours because she can't latch. Even when your child is so hungry and distraught but despite your best effort, can't use her tongue to get the breastmilk out of the nipple, and when you self express, it just goes out the corner of her mouth because she can't latch. Even when your LO is screaming and cant sleep more than 20 minutes at a time, and she's attached at your breast and within 48 hours your nipples are bleeding and she's getting more blood than milk. Breast is still best, right?
Needless to say, our 2nd nurse for our third day immediately got us A LACATION CONSULTANT, who took one look at my child, one look at me, and one look at our chart and said "YOU NEED TO GET THAT CHILD FED RIGHT NOW." Because she wasn't an idiot, and the health of my child was more important than some self righteous ideal that I had to breastfeed. I would have loved too, I tried my darndest-but she's seeing an OT for her sucking/swallowing and I dried up within 12 weeks. Now I have a healthy, physically advanced and VERY HAPPY baby.

As the mother of a 5 year old who has been in daycare since she was 4 months old, if you're going to get all butt-hurt every time something happens at school that you're not happy with, not only is your ass going to hurt 24/7, you're also going to have a long line of teachers that hate you. Good luck with life!

So people who have to formula feed are not taking time and effort with their babies? You ar You do realize donor milk that has been properly screened is very hard to get and usually only given to preemies in the hospital? And I'll be damned if I would give my child unscreened breastmilk and risk him contracting a disease. Formula feeding is a hell of a lot safer in that case.
Eta I don't usually name call, but you ma'am, are a douche.
Your kids HEALTH is at stake?! Please, FFS, never come back here.
(Quoting myself since it's not letting me go back to edit)
Clearly I missed this critical gem of a detail:
You hope they close and other families lose their daycare? Un-f'ing-believable. You're the worst person I've ever seen on TB.
Too long, don't care. Just quoted to say fuck you, and the rainbow you slid in on. I bet it's lonely in your world.
I would take your baby to the hospital and have their stomach pumped to rid them of the poison.
Gooood lawd....
Just wanted to say OP
