GTKY: Your home

I don't think we've ever done a GTKY about our houses. How about it?  I'm an HGTV junkie and love this kind of thing!

So, do you rent or own?  Townhouse, single family home, etc?  Ranch, two-story, tri-level...?  Does your house have a particular style (mid-century, colonial, etc)?  How many bedrooms and baths?  Have you done any renovations?  Include anything else you may want to share!  PIPs are a bonus.

Re: GTKY: Your home

  • We own a 2 br 1 bath condo. It's a 1920's building, gut rehabbed about 8 years ago. It's a 3 floor walk up, brick building, very classic Chicago style.  We've done some minor renovations-- got rid of the fireplace (major space killer), new vanity/sink/mirror in bathroom... and granite in the kitchen is being installed next week!! I'm excited about the granite. DH burned the laminate countertop while brewing beer a couple years ago, and it's finally getting replaced. It'll also be a new sink & backsplash, which should be a major facelift for the kitchen.

We own a single family 2 story home.  Currently it's for sale.  Lol  We're wanting to buy a house with more land or build a home on more land.  We have an acre now but we have close neighbors.

Our home is 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms.  All of the bedrooms are upstairs.  We utilize 3 of the bedrooms now.  We have ours, my SS's, and we use one for an office.

We own our 6 bedroom 4 baths 5,000 square feet, Georgian Colonial built in 1825 on 3 acres. Full renovations to be completed June 2014. In ground pool, garden, and 2 bedroom 2 baths guest house not going to renovated until 2015. Hopefully. FYI couldn't resist the 327,000 price tag. Although its been a HEADACHE once it's completed i'll be happy.
That sounds gorgeous. For $327k in my area you can barely buy yourself a shack. NJ is ridiculous.

We rent, but it's set up like a townhouse: kitchen, dining room, living room on the first floor and two bedrooms (one of which is currently an office) + bathroom on the second floor. We've been keeping an eye on the available houses for sale, but we love living in our neighborhood and like I said a good deal is hard to find here. We're comfortable though so we have plenty of time and patience to wait it out.

  • We own. 5 br/5 ba brick colonial on 2 acres. Three stories. We love it-- sometimes. Being a homeowner is expensive. We are in the process of replacing a picture window and it's amazing how much it costs!

I don't have pictures of the house without kids in it.

  • We own our home. It is a 3 bed, 1 bath, ranch style, very small, brick home. DH bought the house way before we were ever together and has owned it for about 9 years now. It was built in the 1960's and I've seen pics of what it looked like when DH bought it but he has done tons of remodeling. Before I was with DH he put in an all new kitchen, refinished the wood floors, everything was repainted, and remodeled the three-season room. Since we have been together we remodeled our bathroom, put a new deck on the back, put in a new front door, and have done some landscaping.

Last year we put a new roof on and tomorrow we get a new a/c unit. I am done with the remodeling, although DH wants to someday refinish the basement. If we ever have another kid we will have to move to a bigger house. Our plan is to move, within the next 5 years.

We rent the 2nd FL apt in my parent's house.  It's a 3 family Victorian.  Our Apt has 3 BR, 1 bath.  My father remodeled the entire apt. before we moved in since the previous tenant had lived there for 17 yrs and my father had never done any work on that particular apartment.  It's SO much nicer than it was and they rent to us at a major discount, but alas, it is still not far enough away from my mother.
We are planning on buying my FIL's house probably next fall.  I also have a dilemma though b/c when I told my mother this (for about the 16th time, probably) she acted like she had no idea and started playing off the idea that I should buy their house.  The house I live in now and have for almost my entire life.  It is definitely better than FIL's house, more space, better for children AND we have a pool.  Something I am NOT ok with giving up!  So I am faced with this dilemma of what will happen when my parents are ready to sell their house.  Ugh.

Wow! That is awesome! What State are you in? With that price tag you also get a small shack around here, or a small, but somewhat decent townhouse that may need some renovation work.

  • We own. A 2 story colonial townhouse with a finished basement. We moved 1.5 years ago and so far we have redone the kitchen (gutted, tore down a wall to open it up and made it new from scratch). We also did one of the bathrooms, and the powder room. Last year we got new roofing thanks the Hurricane Sandy and a new skylight. Right now we are in the process of finishing up the deck and hopefully the master bathroom will soon be gutted and redone. In a few years when the kids are older we may redo the hardwood floors 'cause I hate the ones we have right now.

  • We own a single-family home. Two stories, 4 bed, 1 bath. We have done a lot of work on the house since we bought it. We re-painted the whole porch/sun room, re-painted almost every room except the office, the bathroom and one room upstairs (which has paneling). We've also updated some of the appliances (because they came with the house - including the dryer and the dishwasher). And put a ceiling fan in the living room.

  • We own a three bedroom, 1.5 bath ranch - it was a pretty standard ranch built in the late 50's, but the previous owners took out one of the small bedrooms to make a big living room, added a large master bedroom and a 16x20 addition to the kitchen.  The basement is partially finished so we have a good amount of space for a "small" house.  With the updates we've done and all the work on the yard (it was a jungle when we moved in) I'm very happy with it :)

We own a single family small ranch home(3BR 1.5B) on a little more then 2 acres of wooded land. I LOVE it! We bought it because it met all of my criteria of being able to have a camp fire behind our home and outside of a development. We never went into the home thinking it would be our forever home, but tbh I think this could be our forever home. Yes, it is small and doesn't have a dishwasher, but I love the location and the property and also the love the cozyness the house is. DH also finished our basement which is awesome and gave us another 600 sq feet of living space. We also have brink pathways all through our property which makes it really awesome... however, leaf apocalypse is soon approaching. :P

We replaced the shed and also those pile of old brinks are no longer there... they where used to build the new shed.

Finished basement... which includes a computer room and large great/family room... we never go in our real living room anymore...

We renovated every room in our current home and will renovate the new house completely before we move in. My husband is a contractor and has to have all finishing touched done by him.

Balaustine: an anthology about wanting family
  • We own, our house is a sinlge family ranch, one level with a full basement, three bedrooms and one bath.

Our house was a foreclosure but in awesome shape...it just needed a little TLC (taking down ugly curtains and border, painting) and very few minor repairs (added extra smoke alarms, fixed some siding on the garage) before we moved in.

We've been working on small renovations in the four years we've lived there....I painted one of the spare bedrooms and made it into a home office, changed out some light fixtures in the kitchen like the old outdated chandalier and hung a pretty new one, I painted and laid some self-stick carpet tiles in one end of the basement to make a home gym, and MH drywalled in another end and made a man cave.

Last summer we ripped out all of the overgrown landscape in the front yard, and a couple months ago we redesigned the garden wall and put in all new landscape.

We just bought, and are waiting on installation of our new patio sliding door (old one is super old, heavy and the seals are broken) and this winter we plan on pulling up the old linoleum floors in the kitchen and putting down new vinyl tiles with grout (we were going to do ceramic tile but it's too cold on your feet).  If we have the time, I'd also like to get a new counter top and kitchen sink.  Our current counter is white corian.  The owner before us used the counter as a cutting board so there are tons of cuts all over it, and the white stains so easily and for weeks.  The sink is made out of the same material (it's all one piece) so my sink always looks filthy.

I'd love a darker colored counter top that doesn't stain (MH comes home very dirty, there should be no white in our house) and a stainless steel sink.

  • Own a two-story 4BR/2.5bath Mediterranean style home, 2,500 sqft.  New build that we moved into last June. All 4 bedrooms are on the second floor, and there's an open loft/living space up there.

Downstairs we also have a dedicated den. Chose this model for the layout to have kids. Eventually the loft upstairs will be a 2nd TV room and the den downstairs will be office/playroom.

We haven't done much other than decorate since it was brand new and we got to make a lot of choices. The guest room and guest bath have been painted. So has the laundry room.  I still deciding on what colors I want to paint the master bed and bath. Hopefully, I will get around to doing it before thanksgiving. And then I'll have to figure out the nursery.

I love my house, but I can see us moving to something bigger when kids are bigger, with more land at some point in the future.

  • We own a 4/2, two story, 2600SqFt house. It's fairly cookie cutter in a master planned community. We bought it last year when I was pregnant with DD and I have joked since she was born that people without kids bought this house. It's a great house, but I would choose a different floor plan knowing what I know now. We have a second living area that I just turned into my dream playroom, but the house was built in 2007 and doesn't need much for upgrades. DH has had fun in the yard and built a really awesome fire pit off the back patio. The room that will be this baby's nursery is currently my office (I WFH), so we've been talking about using a room downstairs that I think is supposed to be a dining room or formal living room (we use it as a "wine study") and putting up barn doors on a track to close off the space for me to use.

We can't wait to move though. I want a house with some land. In the MD/DC area everything is 700k+ and we are trying to wait out the market a bit more before we sell. Sigh.

  • We own a 3 bedroom 2 bath trilevel home in Utah. We live up on the foothills so the mountains are right across the street! The house is 1750 square feet and .25 of an acre, its a corner lot on a cul de sac. There are many things I love about our house including our sunken living room, love that our kitchen is spacious and updated and love my master bathroom. I hate that both bathrooms are upstairs, our fake 2 car garage barely fits my tahoe forget dhs dodge truck, our bathroom fixtures need updated and since we are on the up if a mountain our yard is just oddly laid out and the back fenced area in small. We jusr replaced all the carpet in December and I painted both bathrooms and recently painted my daughters new room pink and got Sophia The First decals. I would like to repaint all other rooms and update our bathroom fixtures and I would be happy.

We own a 2 br, 2 bath town home (I don't think it's actually considered a town home, but that's really the best description. We share one wall with another house.)

When we moved in, we tore out the very damaged carpet and kitchen wood floor and replaced with laminate flooring. Then last year, we had a slab leak and replaced all the flooring again with hickory hardwood flooring. Since my husband and my dad did all the work, insurance covered the upgraded cost and then some. This year we remodeled the kitchen, which took the better part of the year doing all the work ourselves. We refinished the oak cabinets in a dark finish with new cabinet doors/drawer fronts and replaced the white tile counter with granite. We also got some great clearance deals on tiles for the back splash. It was a lot of fun but so much more work than we were able to imagine going into it. Now we're just finishing up replacing the vanity/counter with granite in the hall bath. Then we're at a stopping point.

  • Our house is a 2 story brick home that sits on an acre. We bought in July 2011.  It has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and 2 bonus rooms.  We love it.  It was a foreclosure so it needed a lot of work.  Which we have been doing all ourselves.  We have done everything from painting walls and ceilings to putting in new flooring and building our own fence.
One of my favorite things about it is the flowering trees in the spring!  Then we have like 15 beautiful crepe myrtles which bloom in the summer.

Everyone is always surprised at how it looks on the inside. Not your typical trailer. 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, with a huge walk in tile shower. I'm ready to get out of here though, hopefully within the next year.

  • I love reading about everyone's homes! It's like watching House Hunter ;)
We've owned our 4 bedroom, 2 bath ranch since May 2011. It was one of the very first houses we looked at. It was empty and had been on the market for over 100 days. It was built in 1960, had one owner, and needed some work. Nothing we couldn't handle though. The carpet was new throughout, new roof, new furnace, new laminate wood flooring in the kitchen/dining room, new beautiful wood cased windows... The bathrooms were original though, the kitchen needs some updating and a good amount of wallpaper needed stripped. But we fell in love. We didn't think we'd find a 4 bedroom house in our price range. The house is a few houses up the street from the house my dad grew up in so I was familiar with the neighborhood. It's quiet, with a lot of young couples with kids and elderly people. Since we moved in, we've painted nearly every room and this may DH as my dad gutted our main bathroom. It was all mint green--tile, bathtub, toilet, sink. It looks amazing now. Our master bathroom is a pink/beigh tile and sink with a small stand up shower, so that one is next on the list. Then the kitchen is last. Both aren't awful though and I can live with for a few more years!

Here's a pic of my house and newly renovated bathroom (that I'm madly in love with). Sorry I can't figure out how to flip the bathroom pics!!

  • We bought our house in 2010, after selling our tiny starter home. It's a large ish mid century ranch. I like the mid century character. It has 3 br / 2 ba. So far we have gutted a bath, relocated a door to create a pantry, tiled the kitchen, and did a ton of landscaping ( mostly to correct water issue), and added an egress window in the basement. That last project is prep for the next big one - building a new bedroom in the basement for SS and finishing a rec room.

  • We own a 4 bedroom, 2 ½ bath house that was built in 1906.  It is 3500 sq. feet before you add in the basement and attic which are unfinished but usable (basement has our laundry room, workout room, DH’s wood working room, and our two car garage).  We currently block off parts of the house to save on energy because we barely use the sitting room or second dining room with just the two of us.  We use one bedroom as a guest room, one as an office, the master bedroom is obviously ours, and we are converting our “pets” room into the nursery!  The only thing we’ve really done since buying it was paint a few bedrooms.  The kitchen needs painted desperately as it still has this hideous border with the 1990’s fruit and flowers (makes me dizzy looking at it) but we have not wanted to tackle until at least the fall.

Funny story that happened this week: a bat flew in from the chimney (we assumed because the house was locked down) and was flying around the kitchen Tuesday morning.  I went in all sleepy eyed to get my morning cereal and immediately started screaming as this huge black bat is circling the room and my head.  DH not out of bed yet, hears me screaming, assumes I am being attacked by an intruder, comes running down the stairs wearing boxers and ready to take on the world with only a shower rod we had in the bedroom to be thrown away!  I went from being scared out of my wits to laughing so hard I peed!  Best Tuesday morning ever.  We still haven’t figured out how to prevent bats.

  • We own. I bought our little 3 bed/2 bath house when I was 22. We would love to have more space, but upgrading isn't in the cards right now with DH having just started a new job. We'll stay here at least two more years, if not forever. We love the small mortgage and would he hard pressed to upgrade without doubling our payment.

  • Own, 3bedrooms (although we're hoping to add a 4th in the future) 2.5bath, full basement which we hope to finish off and make a playroom someday!

    Cape Cod, 2 story

We live in the country. Our house is on 40 acres and we have an additional 20 acres down the road (we grow pumpkins on it!)

We also have a big fish pond and a barn. i love our house! Only thing I would change is that I wish the master was on the 2nd floor (it's on the main floor....common with cape's i guess!)

  • We own our home. We built it 4 years ago. It's a 2 story with a full unfinished basement too. Its 3000 square feet. It has 4 bedrooms 2 1/2 baths, a bonus room over the garage. We have tall ceilings on the first floor. A fireplace. It's very countryish decor. My husband and I have done all the inside work from paint to tile. Everyday we find a new project! We made the basement a place for our dog. He has a doggy door to go in and out while we are at work. We are on 3 acres of property an just put in a pool.
  • @kara0729 I love the style of your house! If we ever move we would love to find something with that feel.

We own a 3 br 2 bath 2 story house with a finished basement. The house was built in 1945 and an addition was added to the back in the 90's. We have lived here for 4 years and we have majorly redecorated every room in the house except the basement that was finished the year before we bought it. We did a complete gut of the upstairs, formal living room and dining room. We're about to gut our kitchen and do a complete remodel.

It's not huge, but works for us. We got a fantastic deal on the house. We bought from the original owners who were retiring to NC and they just wanted a fair price. For the MD/DC we couldn't ask for a better house for the price.

  • We own a 3 bed 2 bath cookie cutter home built in 2002 and it is about an hour outside of the city where we work. We've pulled out all the carpet and put in tile throughout. Whole house has been painted and we're about to redo our master bath. DH put an awesome backsplash in the kitchen. All that being said, we HATE living here! It's too small for our growing family and its too far away from work. Two hour commute each day really sucks and we've been doing it for 8 years. We'd love to move (we talk and dream about it all the time) but we bought this house at the height of the market and its lost so much value we can't bear to walk away from the almost $50K we put down. Sigh. On the bright side, we have a super low mortgage and the house isn't very old so we don't have any major issues to deal with.

I love reading about everyone's homes! It's like watching House Hunter ;) We've owned our 4 bedroom, 2 bath ranch since May 2011. Sorry I can't figure out how to flip the bathroom pics!
I love the tile in the bathtub and behind the sink! So pretty! =)
