Dinosaur chicken nuggets?

DS has requested a dinosaur theme for his bday in November. Tonight he found "dinosaur food" (Dino chicken nuggets) and is now insisting on having them for his party! I've never bought any frozen nuggets (I always make my own). Are these disgusting or okay to serve at a 4 year olds party?

Re: Dinosaur chicken nuggets?

  • meh, I'd eat them. But I bet someone here has a way to make them somehow

I just googled making my own and there is actually a lot of resources. I'm going to experiment!! I would feel a lot better about serving non-processed crap!

  • We had them for Tay's 5th birthday party.  It was all we could find at Sam's.  I am too lazy to make my own, so I am used to processed.
  • I think it's completely fine. I'm a food nazi but would definitely let my kiddo splurge in them at a bday party. If you have friends that are super strict with their kids you might want to offer another option as well but I would do it.

  • It's not something I would give my kids regularly, but for a birthday party easiest option goes! I'm a stickler for nutrition on a day-to-day basis, but that's so we can relax and enjoy whatever for birthday parties and the like.

  • Honestly, for a birthday party I think that's totally fine.  I would avoid them at home, but wouldn't bat an eyelash at a party and wouldn't care at all if DD ate them.

  • I think it is fine me you are going to a lot of trouble for nothing. Not to mention my kid would eat the Dino ones before he touched homemade ones.
  • I agree with PPs.  I don't feed DD those types of processed nuggets at home, but I am fine with serving them at parties and having her eat them at parties.  We just don't make a habit out of it.

  • Omg...serve them. I can't imagine worrying about it.

  • I got a box of dinosaur ones at Aldi.  It says they're "rated" for school lunches.  I compared the ingredients/fat/salt content and they are actually much better than other kinds.  It isn't health food, but also not something I'd worry too much about. I keep a box in the freezer.  It hasn't kept him from eating the regular chicken I make.  They do look like dinosaurs too.  I've had them and they taste pretty good!

I think you're confusing Aldi with Ikea.

  • OK if it makes anyone feel better buy them at Costco instead of Aldi.  I'm sure the manufacturer uses totally different ingredients for items sold through Aldi than through other locations.

Thanks for the input everyone! There is one mom who I know will judge me 100% for it, but frankly I'm pretty certain I don't want them there anyways!!

I always make birthday parties more work than they need to be so it'll be nice to take the convenient route this time!! <:-P

Yes but she is wrong Aldi carries and manufactures their own brand it is how they keep prices so low. As evidenced in the horsemeat article.
  • Hav=Fath said:isn't she saying the same brand she buys at Aldi is sold at Costco?
Yes.  There's a little less fat and sodium in these compared to Tyson.  But everything in moderation.

    Oh
No, she isn't wrong.  Aldi carries many brands, not just their own.

  • And don't forget their meat products contain horsemeat yum!
  • Better stay out of Wegmans' and Costco then.  They carry the same brands!

  • Am I the only person who isn't up in arms about the horse meat?  It's not like I LIKE it.  It's gross not knowing what's in your food, but... yeah.  That's processed crap for you.  Why is horse meat more awful than some of the other crap in processed foods/meat?  Like, you know, the stuff that shouldn't even be consumed?  At least horse meat is... meat.    It's kind of icky though.

    Anyway...

I'm kind of crazy about food and I would serve frozen nuggets without another thought.  It's a birthday party.  I also wouldn't judge another mom who did it.  Who cares.  I really don't expect anyone to make enough homemade dino-shaped nuggets for a whole party.
  • OH - I didn't think of this before.  We got a dinosaur shaped sandwich cutter.  It cuts a sandwich into 2 perfect dinosaurs!  Easier than having to heat the nuggets, or you could do it as an extra option.  We did a plate full for his Cars bday party - dinoco sandwiches.

No problem we don't have wegmans and buy our meat from a local farm with no horses!

Well no but I have only bought them once. I will stand behind the fact that with food as everything in life you get what you pay for so I am in no way surprised Aldi meat is crap and crap horsemeat at that. Shit if you are going to buy crap chicken nuggets at least but the ones from Tyson that at least have chicken parts.
  • @Dochas do you know where you got the sandwich cutter? That might be a good option!

I've seen them hanging near the bread at a bunch of grocery stores and WalMart. On one of those impulse buy things that hangs in front of the regular shelves.

Apparently you didn't read past the headline. The horse meat was found in their processed meat products-specifically the lasagna they carried.

Right so what kind of meat are people buying from Aldi that isnt processed beyond belief? Nothing! Yuck

Why do people buy any type of meat there?

The words you are looking for are "Oh, I didn't know Aldi carried other brands".  The words may taste bitter at first, but there will be no lasting side effects.

I don't know why you think Tyson is the gold standard in processed meat, but the nuggets I'm talking about aren't Aldi brand nuggets.  As I have said repeatedly.  I purchased them at Aldi but they are also available at most large retailers, they are just priced better at Aldi.  The Tyson brand has more fat, saturated fat and sodium than these and the same type of meat is used.  It's perfectly fine for you to not know something.  But to keep repeating the same incorrect information is getting ridiculous.

You can buy Perdue products which are hormone/antibiotic/steroid free, cage fed And Made in the us. It's the same stuff every other supermarket chains carry for double the price.

I got mine in Shop Rite.  If it's not by the bread check in the baby aisle.  I think I found them there near the sippy cups.  It's really cute and if you have the smaller bread it doesn't even waste more than just the crust!
