This thread cracked me up. My dad (the one I liked, technically step) was a butcher at an organic foods co-op, hung beef, etc old school style in-store and worked in the grocery business his entire life.
I would never ever ever in a million years for any reason buy anything Aldi or Trader Joe's brand. Frozen/fresh, etc. (I have no input on their processed crap).
The stories I could tell... I'm team AG on this one.
I probably wouldn't buy Aldi brand either. THEY SELL OTHER BRANDS.

Wait, I'm confused. Are you saying that the reason you feed your toddler chicken nuggets is because he throws food? There are all sorts of things you can feed him that aren't in nugget form.
Also, if I had a shot for every time AG said horsemeat I would be so fucking drunk right now.
No. Not at all. I just don't have the time to be trying to prepare super healthy meals everyday just for them to be thrown on the floor. Sometimes I just need to have a lazy day, especially with my needy 4 month old. Like I said, he doesn't get nuggets daily, and well... we don't have any healthy food in the house at the moment because we haven't gone grocery shopping in 3 weeks and can't again until Friday. He already ate all the healthy foods.
If you can't afford to grocery shop on a. Regular basis there is a better use for your money than nuggets. I'm being serious.

Even the other brands they sell are cheap to keep their prices down. That is the the point of Aldis cheap food! Cheap food with fillers.

Perhaps if you can't afford to keep healthy food in the house but every three weeks it is time make some changes. More fruit less Dino nuggets.

elaborate. I shop at trader joes a lot. What should I be avoiding? Or is it just because they are/were owned by the same company as Aldi?

Yes the PTA meeting ended early and it made no sense to drive home since the cleaning people are there. Hey at least I am first on the carpool line. There is the story since I know you were concerned.
Did KC really just call somebody an ignorant hick? Wow. That's rich.
Now, somebody explain to me what an Aldi is. I think we have one here, but I'm sure you are not shocked that I've never been there. Also, new girl with the kid who throws...why do you only shop every three weeks? Nanda--what are you drinking during this horse meat game? I'm jealous. Aurora- Why not baby and why do you have the sads?
But their business practices leading to the Aldi brand stuff means I won't shop there at all.

I would shop at Trader Joe's, but I will always be skeptical of their "fresh" stuff, I've never shopped at either place because of my dad, so it may be different now. When they first came to our area (MN) all of their meat and produce came from Singapore suppliers. I believe it is different now.
Aldi's is a different story. No matter who buys them, I will never be able to shop there. I will never ever be able to trust their practices.
ETA: moral of the story is I'd say you're fine shopping at TJ's.
Talk to me like I'm a moron. By "fresh" you mean....pre prepared meals or like the shrink wrapped packages of ground beef? Spell it out sister!
See, when I'm thinking I want something easy and quick for lunch, baking chicken nuggets is the last thing on my mind. If it's not leftovers that I reheat, I rarely use the stove/oven for lunch. We have sandwiches, veggies, hummus, cheese, fruit, etc.
I don't think chicken nuggets are the devil, but I don't think my 2 year old has ever had them, let alone on any kid of a semi-regular basis. Wait, she has had them from chikfila. (I know, I know)

We already buy a lot of fruit and veggies when we go grocery shopping, that is also bought from a produce farm to save money. We spend almost $100 just on fruit and veggies already. We make decent money, but also have a lot of debt that we are working really hard to pay off, which is why we only shop every 3 week's. We moved back in with my parents so we can get it paid off in at least 2 years to buy our own place And so we are better off in the long run. Dino nuggets last us a long time btw.

Exactly. I never cook lunch unless its just re heating. DS's favorite lunch is fruit, yogurt, cheese and whole wheat crackers. Sometimes we switch it up and instead of cheese he'll have carrots & celery

Wait, what? It was TB that introduced me to Aldi in the first place! I don't get the hate. I love, love our Aldi. I will say, I've never bought meat there, but you can't beat their prices on pantry items. I stock up on their oatmeal, grahams, spices, cereals, etc. And none of that is different than what's in the big brands at the grocery stores.....
But their business practices leading to the Aldi brand stuff means I won't shop there at all.

meat and produce. I'm not sure of how it's set up at TJs, but at a 'regular' grocery store it would be the butcher counter packaged stuff (a pound of beef, etc) and the produce. But, like I said, I believe it's different now.
I have no knowledge of their pre-prepped (do you mean like deli-type packaged?) meals.
Cool, thanks. And yeah, I mant like deli style meals
Actually she called me a small minded hick because we all know KC is the most open minded person on this board \:D/ Cheap food is KC hot button.
Yeah, how was I the only one calling her out on that? The funny thing is from anyone else I might have taken it somewhat seriously but I am always right KC is the last person I will take that seriously from. I think she has always been so proud of her $45 a week grocery budget it has to be tough to know it is so low thanks to horse meat and pink slime.
Is anything safe at aldi? My H loves to get junk food from there. I told him the other day that if he died from eating aldi Cheeto puffs it serves him right, lol.
Junk food is junk food anywhere. I am sure the Cheetos are just as bad at Kroger:)

Actually I don't even shop at Aldis. Lmao. Not on principal--just that there's a similar discount chain with better produce. Our Aldis kind of suck with produce. I also don't feed my family processed lasagna or hamburgers, don't eat ground beef and am loyal to Perdue for meat so no horse meat or pink slime for this family. I gotta find a way to be skinnier than you, after all.
Before coming on message boards, I had no clue feeding your toddler chicken nuggets was like giving them arsenic to some moms lol. Nuggets are maybe one of 5 things that dd will eat and I don't feel the least bit bad giving them to her. Oh, and for the op, I think your idea is fine. We use Purdue..
Now I'm wrestling with the ethical question of horse nuggets vs. nuggets from CFA.
How about neither?!?
I'm not about to act like I check out the business ethics of all the food or products I buy and eat but I can't in good conscious step foot in CFA.
I actually love Chick-Fil-A. The have the best chicken nuggets by far, and I love their waffle fries.
Lovely. You fit right into the bsc of this thread.
To the others am I missing something? Are chic fil a nuggets come from local farms or are they also the same processed chicken you can find frozen in a bag???
While I do not wish to defend galque or the beliefs of chick fil a - no, their chicken is not the same processed chicken nugget you get in a bag or at McDonalds or Wendys. They are just actual pieces of chicken. It is good and I miss it.

Please bare with me; I'm not as educated as some of you in regards to various qualities of meat. When you are saying it is actual pieces if chicken what is the difference between the chicken in their nuggets versus pre packaged frozen chicken nuggets from Tyson or Purdue?
I believe most nuggets are basically chicken puree/ground chicken that's been deep fried, so you don't really know what you're getting. There are often tons of fillers. Even when they claim to use real chicken they can use a very small percentage of real chicken and make the claim (because there is *some* real chicken in there).
From what I'm gathering chick fil a's nuggest are white meat chicken cut into nugget shape. I've never been to CFA (they don't exist near me, so even before the boycotts began I hadn't been there) but I assume that's what they're saying.

cfa is actual chicken breast sliced into pieces. tyson, purdue, and the like (and other fast food nuggets) are not whole pieces of chicken - that's why the texture is spongy, for lack of a better word.
hey anybody else notice that galque is liking some comments on here? apparently she's a fan of hate nuggets, go figure!
Okay Ms Knowseverything (but not in the "creepy" way ), Who is that?
i wasn't on much when all that went down, and i just now read through a couple of the posts (not the entire threads though.) idk who it is - the board has changed a lot since then, and we know that some old timers are always lurking around, so really i think it could be anybody. and oddly enough, it never interested me to figure out who it is, i guess b/c she's saying she's an AE and this is how she feels. not as interesting as someone trying to pull something.

I am a board regular who happens to be a conservative Christian. So when posting about those topics or various other things, I use my AE Galque. I love the wonderful ladies on this board, but just happen to disagree on certain things, so instead of alienating my friends, I created an AE.
I don't get being up in arms over horse meat. They eat dogs and cats in other countries, and horse, and for many, eating cows and chickens and pigs is against religious beliefs, cultural beliefs, local custom, etc.
Just popping in here but I think the problem with horse meat is when you buy what you believe to be beef and it turns out there is actually horse meat mixed in with the beef.
ETA: it is kind of like leaving the bar with a guy only to find out later that he is actually a woman. Not that that ever happened or anything.
