Babies: 0 - 3 Months

crying before napping

My son is 2 months old.  Last week he started crying before he would fall asleep for his naps during the day.  He's tired, has full belly, has burped, and has a clean diaper.  Is he too young to be crying himself to sleep?  How long is too long to let him cry it out?

Re: crying before napping

  • He's too young to let him cry. My son started doing the same thing around that time. He loves to cuddle now before going to sleep. Try rocking him to sleep and then put him down. There is a reason he is crying, so letting him cry it out isn't a good idea.

  • Yes, my baby cries quite a bit at nap time. I either nurse him or rock him until he stops. You can let him fuss around for a minute, but do not let him cry! That's just sad :(
  • Wowzers, no need to be mean about it! I was always under the assumption that some babies cry a little before they fall asleep. just be sure there isn't an underlying problem and that you are taking good loving care of your baby. I don't think your question needed to be critizied. I think it was a good question.
  • I personally haven't mastered the lay the baby down awake and let them soothe themselves to sleep technique. My dude only likes to nap on me. When I lay him down in his RnP he only sleeps for 20 minutes or so and wakes up crying with a mad "wtf" face.
  • My 2 month old does this as well. Actually, that's my cue that he's ready for a nap. He still needs needs help falling asleep though. I generally have to do some rocking, shushing, or he goes in his swing (thank the Lord for swings!). If he fusses (not really crying, just little "wahs" every 30sec or so) I don't pick him up and he will fall asleep within 10 minutes. If he is still doing those or it escalates, I pick him up and pull out all the stops (swaddle, shush, squats).

  • Check out the book Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child ( I think that is the title) it worked wonders for me.
