May 2014 Moms

How are you telling your parents?

My husband and I scheduled dinner with my parents (Friday) and his (Saturday). How are you telling your parents? What do you think is the most memorable, special way? Any ideas?

Re: How are you telling your parents?

  • I bought a thing on Etsy that says mommy is due with baby number 2 may 2014 and then buying my daughter a big sister shirt. We r gonna take some pics.
  • Loading the player...
  • Gave mom a gift (bib that read "Thank heaven for grandmas") an told her she needed to keep this gift around her house for emergencies. She cried and hugged me. Gave dad a picture frame decorated with "Grandpa & Me" and printed a picture that read "Picture due in May 2014"). He knew right away and loved the gift.

My mom had been bugging me for a copy of a picture of her and my dad from our wedding so when we found out we were pregnant with DS I gave them a framed copy of the picture with a note attached that said: "Wedding Photographer.....$1200. Frame......$4.99. Cost of 1 print.....$.49. Finding out the two people in this picture are going to be grandparents....priceless"

It took them a minute to catch on, but they loved it!

With my inlaws I showed up at Christmas wearing a shirt that said "Future Buckeye on Board."  They're all huge Ohio State fans so it was a hit!

This go around we had DS give my dad a new book to read.  The book was "I'm a Big Brother now"  We skyped with my inlaws and did the same thing.  Certainly not the most creative way as a lot of people do that to announce number 2, but since this is the first time OUR child is a big brother, everyone thought it was a cute.  If this is your first, obviously that wouldn't work.  ;)

  • I found a letter to the grandparents written by the baby, and I made 2 of them and gave each set of parents a copy. They both freaked out!! See the attached letter
  • I said, "Hey mom, you know how we were supposed to go clothes shopping for my birthday?  We might need to get some different clothes"  She immediately knew.

  • Both sets of parents already know. We gave them early Grandparent's Day cards and Cardinals onesies.

In my parents card I wrote "Papa and Grandma, I'm SO excited to meet you next year! Can you please keep this here for me in case my mommy is like Aunt Kim and forgets to pack me clothes and then I have a poop explosion like my Cousin Ryan?"

Long story short, my nephew was very little, my sister forgot to pack him clothes and he promptly exploded his diaper everywhere. Mom had to find a little pink bunny sleeper for him to wear because no one had anything else. :)

  • My Mom, Dad and DD were out to eat and my Dad told my mom to go and grab some drinks from the bar while we were waiting to be seated.  So my Mom asked what I wanted to drink and I just said I wanted water.  Instead of just saying 'ok', she asked 'why?".  I was like 'Why do you think??'  Me not drinking is a dead giveaway that I'm KU.  I never turn down a glass of wine or a beer.  So that's how it was revealed.  We planned on having them over to our house on grandparents day (this past Sunday) to make them dinner and announce but that plan fizzled.

  • I don't have anything specific planned, I can only hope it's less awkward that with my son. "Ummm... soo.. guess what? Ummm... yeah so, we're having a baby..."  My husband was completely useless when it came to telling my parents so I (jokingly) told him he was on his own telling his own parents. He actually told them while I was in the bathroom!

Maybe I'll think of something creative this time.... or steal one of you guys' ideas :)

  • Haha we're doing the exact same thing @dubski . Dinner with my rents/siblings Friday, dinner with his Saturday. I bought a big sis shirt for our dog since we're having them both over to our house. I'm excited but a little sad it will no longer be our little secret!

  • My parents are coming over Thursday night and I'm going to put DD in the big sister shirt that I wore when my sister was born and see how long it takes them to notice.  We're still trying to make plans with my ILs

  • We were on vacation with my parents when the day I took the HPT. I had my daughter walk out to them and say "baby coming" and they totally got it right away.
  • We told my n laws when we were at their cabin for Labor Day. They brought a bottle of one just for me (they all drink sugary sweet wine and I prefer dry wine, so it was very sweet of them), but obviously I couldn't drink it. We figured it was easier to spill the beans than to try and hide it for the whole weekend. For my parents we made a build a bear with the birth certificate. My dad was tinkering with something when we gave it to them and he missed it, so it was funny watching my mom shove he birth certificate in his face saying "no, LOOK!"

  • I made a onesie that said coming in may 2014 my little brother or sister for my dd to wear to my parents house.they were thrilled.dh just out right told his dad and he was pissed.he didnt want us to have any more children.asked my dh if he didnt know how to go to the store and buy something that prevented pregnancy.really we only have one.now two. I felt so bad for him.
  • DH's parents live out of state and had already planned on being here for vacation. We are having dinner with them and my parents on the 18th -- which has been planned for two months now.  We plan on telling both sets of parents there at dinner.  I have a few ideas tossing around in my head!

I really like the poem that @jsaffer01 posted above, and I may do something with that now. lol

But before seeing that I had created this custom photo (5"x7") that I could print and put into either a frame or card for my parents.  My DH's parents already have 6 grandkids so on their copy I would put the word "again" after grandparents.

  • So cute! Congratulations!
  • We told my MIL by having DS wear a "big brother" shirt. I told my mom over the phone since she's out of state. I can never hold good news in for too long :)

Silly emotional me... Definitely tered up when I read this. I feel like I'm going crazy!

  • We gave my mom some wall art that says "there's no place like home except nana's house", she opened it but didn't catch on because she already has grandkids. I asked her if she got it and she looked at me like I was crazy so DH just blurted out , your daughter is pregnant. Wish I would have recorded the reaction because it was priceless.
  • I know this is going to sound ridiculous but did any of you guys not know how your parents would react?  All these stories seem to know that your parents are going to be thrilled, so they're fun, cute, happy ideas!
We've been married 3 years and we're totally ready to have babies, but we're the first in the family to do it and my parents always say they're in "no rush" to be grandparents. (as if it's about them..) I think they're afraid it will make them feel old. :/  So I'm nervous about telling them just in case the response isn't "AMAZING YAY!" and it's more like, "Wow, are you ready? Were you trying?" instead.
  • I took a picture of my youngest in her big sister's "big sister" (only one size too large) and showed my mom. She said when my parents had come over a few weeks ago I looked thin and pale and she wondered then (although that would have made it the weekend of conception... so I doubt I had any symptoms).

I showed my dad the pic, but being a man, he said she was cute. We just bought a minivan (as in, last Tuesday... two days before I got my BFP) and I said it was a good thing we bought a van, because we'll be needing it in about nine months. He got it then. :-p

  • We bought "Grandmother of All Things" and "Grandfather of All Things" (Dr. Suess) T-Shirts when we were in Orlando this spring. We plan to send them a box (they live across the country) containing these T-shirts and Dr. Suess' book "The Cat in the Hat".

@ehowa499 - I LOVE the Build-a-bear idea. I was wondering if it is possible to record the baby's actual heartbeat an put it inside...

  • Nothing special this time-we just told them.  With #1 I had it all planned out...I would wait until my 1st appt and get an u/s pic,  On Mothers Day they would get a Grandma card with a u/s picture inside.  I also bought my mom a blankie that said "I Love Grandma."

My grandma ended up going into the hospital before Mothers Day and it wasn't looking good.  My mom was having anxiety attacks and starting to shut down from the stress of it all so I thought she needed some good news, so I wrapped the blanket and gave it to her early.  She had been waiting for me to get pregnant so she was over the moon!
  • We are giving our parents gifts which will be a grandparents frame & a framed pic of our dog wearing a sign that says baby (last name) guard dog duty starts may 2014
  • We aren't telling until closer to Halloween but for DS we ordered personalized m&m's with the u/s pic on some, the others said baby#2, Big Sis, Baby on board in orange and white and then we passed them out as if the were Halloween candy ( he was born april 2012) i took my parents a while to pay attention to the writing, lol.
With DD our first, we had a bbq and brought out the cake it said "We're Pregnant!" on it, that was fun, it took my mom forever to figure it out I guess she was so flustered, haha

That's exactly how my husband told his parents. I married a creative one, let me tell you.

I just flat out told my parents, because I'd been bitching to my mom about various conception-related things for the last few months, so it would've been highly suspect if I'd all of a sudden stopped talking about it.

  • Well for my mom I made cupcakes and in hers I baked a little baby. I got it from the baby shower isle of my party supply store. We got it on video it was great!
For my dad I was showing him pictures of our house we are building and the last one was a pic of a the positive pregnancy test. Totally caught him off guard!
For mil we are going to wrap up a baby doll as her bday present.
For fil my husband told him he had this awesome shirt. He got it and showed him. It says real men change diapers. It took him a minute. Lol
  • I've got a scan next Tuesday and will be telling my dad probably the weekend after. We're just going to show him the pic of the scan and tell him that's his grandchild. Keeping it simple.

Last time we gave my parents a card that said "congratulations on becoming grandparents". Unfortunately we lost that one and we lost my mum a month later, so it was a double whammy. I'm looking forward to telling my dad as he really needs cheering up, but we need to be sure that we actually having a baby before we tell him.

  • We weren't all that creative LOL.  I met up with my mom and just told her.  DH called his parents (they live a couple states away) and asked if they were ready to be grandparents.  And I called my dad and told him that I wanted to tell him about a test I'd taken that day.
    "Oh?  What was it for?"
    "Welllll... the result was, 'positive'."
"Ah.  So what was this test"?
    *facepalm*
"It was a pregnancy test, dad."

  • My mother in law has been bugging us for a new family picture so we are going to take one after the first ultrasound and have the kids holding it and give it to her. My parents have never been the kind of parents that enjoy these things so with them its pretty much a "call them when you only have five minutes to talk and hope they dont make you cry" deal. They act like I will always be 16 and fresh in a relationship and need someone to tell me how stupid I am...even though I'm 28 and we're going on nine years of marriage :(
  • We're going to have a photo shoot set up around Thanksgiving. We're going to have pictures taken with parents/grandparents putting up our tree with the boys and we're introducing our elf on a shelf. The elf it going to bring a gift for each of the boys that they're going to open: Big Brother t-shirts. And we'll have professional photos of the reaction. Hopefully I can last that long, I'll be 15-16 weeks!

I am doing that to tell everyone else in a month or so. But I have 2 dogs so one will have baby (last name) guard dogs, and the other one will have duty starts May 2014

  • We have a game night scheduled, where we're going to play Pictionary. DH is going to draw a stork with our due date under it and let them work it out.

  • I told mine ASAP over Skype. We live 8 hours away and I won't be seeing them until the end of October... I am too close to my mom to not talk about it! I always pictured it in a cute way but should have known I'd never be able to wait that long!
  • For DS, we had just closed on our house so we did a scavenger hunt to different rooms. When they ended the hunt in the room that would eventually be the nursery, we gave them a box with a rebus puzzle on top. Inside was a board book, a pair of baby socks and the ultrasound picture. It took them a while to figure out the puzzle but once they did their faces were priceless!

Not sure how we'll top that one this time around...
