December 2013 Moms

Christmas question

For those of you who celebrate Christmas, do you plan on buying gifts for the new baby? If so, what on earth do you buy for an infant for Christmas. They're so young that it seems more like buying gifts for myself. Just curious what other people thought about this.

Re: Christmas question

  • I don't plan on getting him anything this year.

  • I figure we will get the baby a few toys that didn't get purchased off the registry. Mostly I just want to get my bf some dad stuff and probably superhero daddy and son stuff
  • We will not buy the baby gifts per se, but I would like to do something that would be more sentimental that he can have all his life (still trying to finalize the idea).

I know my mom plans on getting the baby gifts though, like stuff we still need that we haven't gotten yet, and probably clothes for all I know. I already said no toys though! Seems ridiculous at this point...
  • Heck yeah baby gets a gift. His first Christmas ornament, plus I'll get him a baby rattle.

  • We didn't for DS, but we will for this one. Mostly because DS will expect the baby to get some presents. I don't think we're going to go too crazy with presents for him this year.

  • I plan on getting either an outside swing for him or something for him to ride around in for summer :)

  • Yes but I am a STM. My son will be 4 then and he has already asked me, "Will Santa know to bring the baby gifts?" so now I kind of have to get the new baby stuff and wrap it and make it look like Santa bought it. I will probably get some practical things that he needs like bottles and diapers and a few toys.

  • I didn't get anything for my November baby last year. I don't think I'm doing anything for #2 this year, but DS will get stuff since he can open gifts this year. I didn't even have a stocking for DS last year because I couldn't find the 'perfect one.'  :|

  • He'll just be getting a baby's first Christmas ornament and my mom will probably just get left over stuff from the registry for him. He's not going to know any different.

  • Nope we are just going to get the things off of the registry that we don't get at the baby shower. We are team green so once the baby is here, I will definitely be buying lots of boy or girl clothes which will be like a million gifts that are needed! Plus, I know my family will be buying plenty!

  • She will get her first Christmas ornament and I am sure the grandparents will do fun stuff. Maybe a stocking with some things like teethers and pacifiers.
  • Mine better not be outside the womb on Xmas! She needs to marinate another week after that. I bet my mom buys her gifts anyway, but I know I won't be.

  • I bought a few onesies from Zulily this week - some for my NFL team and some for DH's NFL team. I got them big enough for next season so I'm thinking those will be LO's Christmas gifts for this year. If we're not at the hospital for Christmas haha

    BFP#3: 2/9/13 EDD 10/18/17. Team Green for Round 2!

  • Depends on when she decides to arrive. With an EDD of 12/27 you never know. I would do a First Ornament probably, but I will be too busy with DD 1 to worry about DD 2. That makes me feel bad now that I type it out :(

  • I'm planning on doing his stocking...mainly for the pictures.
  • We aren't really planning on it but I do plan to tell my relatives that if they want to get her presents, acceptable gifts are books, movies, and/or gift cards so I can buy diapers or whatnot
    You're kidding right?
  • No, I don't think I'll be getting him anything, but I don't think I'll be getting my husband anything either! (And i don't expect anything) It might be more of a family present this year. Maybe a nice camera to take pictures of our new family...something along those lines.
  • I think I'm liking the idea of the stocking and maybe putting some cute stocking stuffers in it. I just felt like it was unnecessary to go and buy a bunch of gifts for the baby, but I still wanted some cute pictures for his first Christmas.
  • Def won't be buying gifts. My fam prob will but my husband and I will not be.
  • My DD is 6 and has been asking if she should put some stuff for the baby on her Santa list so that he will know to bring her stuff too. I think we will just do a couple small things and a tiny stocking mostly for pictures. I'm sure the extended family will have gifts for LO.

  • Nope. She'll have zero idea what's going on. That said, we may have DD get the baby a small present if she wants to.

  • DH and I started buying an ornament every year when we first started dating. I'm hoping to continue our tradition, as well as purchase one for LO every year starting this year. Other than that, I'm sure our families will be giving enough gifts that we will probably pass this year.

My mom always kept our yearly ornaments, and when I moved out a few years ago, I got my collection of 24 ornaments. It was neat to have.
  • It did not even occur to me until I saw this, to buy my new child a Christmas present. Holy cow, I'm a terrible mom already :(

  • I will probably get "baby's 1st christmas" ornament and maybe an outfit.  And I was thinking of letting DD pick out something small for baby just to start a tradition and routine of 'gift-giving'.

  • He will get something small from Santa because DS is a believer.  We will also get him a small gift like an ornament.

Then I'm a terrible mom too. Absolutely never occurred to me.

  • We bought DD a Christmas Madame Alexander doll for her first, so we'll do something similar for this one too.

  • We've already got LO an outfit and some little toys to get from Santa. We will get her Christmas p.j.s and some little stocking stuffers also. Things like pacifiers and such. She'll get a lot more than she would other wise just for our older kids benefit.
  • We decided to get him his activity mat for Christmas.  Santa leaves DD's gifts unwrapped and set up, so DS will have something unwrapped and set up as well.

I'll probably have DD pick something out to give to him also and, of course, we're doing a stocking and 1st Christmas ornament.

  • She'll get a yearly ornament - that's probably all this year.  DD was 6 months her first Christmas and had tons of fun ripping off wrapping paper and playing with things, so if they were 6+ months, I would (just small things). But a 2 week old? Nah. No need.

FWIW - if you do have a younger kid, wrap in tissue paper, makes it a lot easier for them to open.

FWIW#2 - we're doing want/need/wear/read with DD and I love it so far. From mom and dad she gets one gift she wants, one she needs, one thing to wear, and one thing to read, then she'll get a couple presents from Santa too. I'm loving this as a way to keep the insanity of Christmas checked. When she's older, I think I'll also be doing the "one in, one out" thing for toys - when she gets a new toy for her birthday or Xmas, she needs to choose an old toy to donate.
I love the fwiw #2! Cool idea!

  • I'll get a couple things to put under the tree and in her stocking mainly for sentimental reasons and so DD1 sees that there is something for her baby sister from Santa.

  • Definitely a stocking and probably just wrap a few essentials I was planning to get anyways. I let grandmas and grandpas worry about the funsie gift stuff. :)

    Exactly what we're doing.
  • I think we're going to be doing some more sentimental stuff. We are getting his first ornament, his first Mickey ear hat, probably a stuffed animal, and probably his baby blanket.
    NOPE.
  • I'm a late December due date and have a feeling my baby won't come until January anyways. If for some reason my baby comes before Christmas I am not stressing over a gift. Baby will have all new things anyway and that will be the last thing on my mind.
  • Our second was an August baby. She didn't know, but I wrapped some sippy cups. So there was something under the tree for her.

  • Our sure date is Dec 26... We told family no gifts for us but if they choose, to buy something for the baby instead. I'm sure I will get something memorable for DH and I to mark this time in our lives. Pp's mentioned an ornament.
  • The gift will be that I gave him life. Plus I'm sure my family will get him things.

  • He'll have a stocking and a boob full of milk. All he will want and need. Haha.
haha! exactly.  I will fill a stocking and probably buy her a Christmas ornament.
