Diving in with a couple questions!

edited August 2013 in 1st Trimester
Hi everyone!

I'm new here and excited to "meet" some new people on the journey through pregnancy. :)

I'm a mother of two beautiful children. My daughter is nearly 4, and my son is about 18 months. We just found out we are expecting #3, and are overjoyed about it. Still, it's hard not to have all the typical first trimester worries. You'd think I would have gotten over those by now...

So, here's my first question for you! My last period began on July 16, which makes me 5 weeks and some change. My first prenatal appointment is set for Wednesday, August 28. That would make me about 6 weeks, give or take depending upon when I actually ovulated.

As much as I love the idea of having my first appointment as soon as possible, I don't want to risk going in too soon and not seeing a heartbeat. With #1, I saw a heartbeat at 5 weeks, 6 days. I know that's early, though.

So, would you reschedule for the following week, just to be safe? Or keep the appointment? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Secondly, for all you coffee drinkers, do you still have a cup a day? Or have you cut it out altogether? I'm often so tired keeping up with my other two that I still drink a cup a day.

Thanks for reading, everyone! See you around!

  • 1.  Congratulations!
    2.  As for your first question, IF they do an ultrasound it is probably too early to see much going on, but that doesn't rule it out completely.  I wouldn't worry about it though since your first appt might just be bloodwork & forms.  Depending on your OB, many women do not receive an ultrasound at their first appt.
    3.  As long as your stomach says it's ok, a cup of coffee/day is fine.  I continued drinking 1 cup in the mornings when I first found out, but then at 5 weeks, hyperemesis set in and I haven't had coffee since.  If it weren't for that, I'd still be drinking my one cup!

  • I would keep your appointment. If they don't detect a heartbeat yet, you'll go back in about a week later. But being 6 weeks, you'll likely find one. And then you'll feel relief from anxiety sooner!

As for coffee, I cut out all caffeine. There are a lot of studies liking caffeine consumption during pregnancy to all sorts of things and my fertility specialist said no caffeine. Period. I err on the side of caution and just avoid it. Then again, I'm not a die hard coffee lover.
  • I'm planning to go at 8 or 9 weeks for the first appointment , when the time comes ,,, & I drink 2 coffees every morning until I just don't feel like it from being morning sick,,, then eventually I rev back up to one a morning because its a treat & I was getting afternoon headaches since coffee is one of the most addictive substances in the world!!!!!
    Congrats!!!!
I think the more kids you have the more questioning you can get because with each kid you learn how beautiful, miraculous and vulnerable life REALLY is!!

  • I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks and saw a heartbeat.  My first appointment was just blood work and answering questions, so I'm not sure if yours will be the same. Also, I cut out all caffeine because I am overly cautious.  I was never a coffee drinker, but I heard that 200mg of caffeine per day is okay as well.
  • Keep the appt. They will likely see or hear a heartbeat, depending on what they use. Also, even if they can't find the heartbeat, the size of your uterus will clue them in to whether there is a growing baby in there. No worries, Mama. Everything should be fine. As far as coffee, I wouldn't stress about one or two cups. I never
  • My doc says you can have 2 cups of coffee a day!
  • I would keep the appt too, I just went in Thursday and I was 5 weeks 6 days and we saw a heartbeat:-) congrats!!!

  • Keep the appointment. If they don't see what they want they will reschedule.

Also coffee is very high in acid. That's why I had to switch to tea. Caffeine is no biggie just limit yourself. 1 cup a day. Congrats!
  • I drink two cups of coffee a day, one in the morning and one in the mid afternoon when I would normally have a Diet Coke to wake myself up.

I would probably push the appointment back, but a lot of other ladies obviously disagree - it's a judgment call! It's hard for me to make an appointment with my work schedule, so rescheduling isn't that easy for me.
