GMO's in formula

Hello first off I fully intend to breastfeed but with my first son I could not produce milk! After a month of lactation appointments supplements and medications to increase milk supply I gave up!
I have read that some formulas contain Genetically modified organisms ! I would rather not give my child a formula with GMO ingredients anyone know of formulas besides organic that do not contain it? Anyone do any research on this? I am going to talk to my pediatrician about this because I will need to get a prescription to give him a formula other then the ones provided in the hospital! Just wondering if anyone has thought about this and done research?

Re: GMO's in formula

  • I'm sure if you google enough you will find the brands you're looking for. I've never heard this though, where did you read it?
  • Loading the player...
  • I am a member of many gmo awareness groups on fb! I have been googling and can't find a clear answer! In December the president signed an act that we do do have to label foods that have genetically modified ingredients but there are all kinds of organizations against this! March against Monsanto is a good place to start if your interested!
  • I'm not really. LOL I just find it hard to believe that there are GMOs in all formula except organic. My husbands former law firm was one of many to be part of the original Monsanto lawsuit.
  • FWIW I plan to use organic if breastfeeding fails or if we need to supplement.  Mostly because of food additives and preservatives in regular formula but also for the GMO reason.  Why are you dismissing organic out-of-hand?

There are GMOs in most all food, why would formula be different? I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to know more/ be more involved in this. It directly effects your child's health for the rest of their life

  • In answer to the question, I've not done research specifically on this because I also plan on breast feeding. Good luck though! Glad to see other people aware of these things

I didn't mean I wasn't interested in it at all. I meant I wasn't interested in the formula thing. I plan on using organic formula if I have to use it. We eat almost exclusively organic/local meat, fruit, dairy, etc. already, so formula would be no different for us.
  • I am unable to breastfeed, due to medical reasons.  As wonderful as it would be to be able to feed my little guy organic non-GMO formula, he may or may not like it.  You never know what your baby is going to like until you feed him or her, which is why there are five million formulas out there.  If my baby doesn't like organic non-GMO formula, then I will be trying EVERY type of formula there is until I find something that he likes so he will eat enough.  Yeah, we all want the best for our babies and for them to have the best foods possible, but how do you know what your baby will or will not accept?  You cannot starve your child if he or she doesn't like organic non-GMO formula.  Just saying.

I planned to breastfeed my first son too! I could not though :( it's good to have a back up plan!

  • We supplemented a little with my DD when I went back to work and it was harder to keep up my supply.

We used Baby's Only Organic. It's marketed as "toddler formula" because the company doesn't want to encourage people to use it in lieu of breastfeeding for the entire first year, which is pretty douchey in my opinion, but whatever. She liked it and after researching organic formulas I thought it was one of the best.

I also have friends who used Earth's Best Organic formula. I've found this brand to be very trustworthy, overall, in terms of making healthy, natural products for babies.

  • We eat mostly organic or local in our household but I was seeing what my options are! I read that there is something in organic that babies should not have but they never said what it was.
I will most likely feed him organic if my boobies fail me again :(
Organic formula is more costly so it's nice to have options!

Sorry I misunderstood. I would assume you would be if your husband had to be involved in it. I get touchy because DH doesn't really care :( It's a constant battle.

  • Not all organic food is non GMO! Just an FYI. You guys still need to see if it says non-GMO on the labels.

If you Google "organic baby formula" there are basically three options- Earth's Best, Baby's Only and Vermont Organics, none of which contain GMOs.

To your point, Similac also makes an organic brand and there's no mention of GMOs in that product description. But if you're seriously concerned about GMOs, hormones, organic ingredients, etc., a major formula brand probably isn't going to be at the top of your list.

I will probably go with Earth's bedt my first son only ate their baby food and has a lot of their snacks!
Just an FYI! My hospital requires me to bring a prescription if I chose to feed my son anything other then what they have to offer! They only offer similac or enfamil! You may want to check on the policy as well if you want a back up plan.
  • Thank

thank goodness most companies are starting to label non gmo!!!
  • To each their own! My first son had similac and he is okay but now that I know about the risks of GMO's I have chosen to give the next something I feel is better!

    MOAR EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!

Seriously, it's just the internet, lighten up. Of course I worry about the foods I put in mine & my family's bodies.

I mean, if you want to get in a huge debate about GMOs, I guess we can. I actually read a very interesting piece done by an anti-GMO activist that made good points about the argument FOR GMOs, especially in developing countries.

    Edited for dumb grammar mistake.

I didn't mean to sound snappy but if someone does not agree they can just not post on it! People have a right to make their own choices without being mocked :)
  • Doesn't really matter! It's your choice to give you'd child whatever you choose as it is mine!

Excuse me? Why am I in trouble?

Was I replying to you or speaking about you in any way? I was talking to Gwinny. Reading comprehension much?

Organic brown rice can contain arsenic.  That was the baby food scare recently.

Is it only the brown rice?

For real? I don't have time for this! Why don't you go do some research on how bad GMO's are for people instead of mocking my choice to
Not give my child regular formula trash mouth!
  • Seriously I feel like we're having two different conversations here. I give up.
  • How did this go so awry?

  • That must be because I can't comprehend what I am reading!
  • No one is mocking anyone's choices. It was a joke that a few others joined in on. If I'm not mistaken, @KateMW even said she preferred organic.

If you're secure in your choices, then there is no need to get defensive.

  • Posting something to an online message board and then getting mad when someone disagrees with you is silly. Maybe that is the wrong word to use, but on here we have discussions, and I for one value different opinions than mine because it adds to the discussion and then I get to learn and possibly grow as a person.  If I see someone post something that I don't agree with, I might respond with my point of view. If you only want people to agree with you, you are going to have bad luck here.

I am very secure in my choice o not give my son poison! I was asking if anyone knew of formulas that do not contain GMO's I was not really asking for anyone's opinion on it!

You're being a psycho. Quote someone who disagreed with you. I dare you.

Ok good, somebody else saw that. I was beginning to think it was invisible.
